What a disappointment this season is turning out to be. Unlike previous years where we could point to injuries as for the reason the wheels fell off, this season we have been relatively healthy, especially on the side of the ball we are struggling most, offense. I do admit i never thought we would see a Babers offense be as bad as it is this year. It's too bad this is the year the offense struggles because the defense has actually been really good, minus the Maryland game. The thing that makes me nervous is there really isn't anything that would point to improvements in the near future. Our OL recruiting has been downright embarrassing, and this years class is the worst Babers has had. Here's what I would like to see:

- Just like the season finale of Succession, there's going to have to be a blood letting. Just too many things went wrong in a year where things weren't supposed to be this bad. Cavanaugh is the first to go. I have been apprehensive about the hire ever since we saw numerous Nebraska fans show up to warn us just how bad the guy was. Never have we actually seen opposing fan bases show up to warn us about a hire. Those Nebraska OL's were bad with talent. Now we are seeing what he can do with minimal talent. All-time worst OL territory. Change needs to be made. I would like to see other small changes made on the staff. Guys like Ward, Monroe, Lustig, Reno all pull their share recruiting, but we need to bring in some guys with proven recruiting chops. You can't win consistently if you don't have talent. You need the guys on the staff to bring it in. There are far too many position groups underachieving who do absolutely nothing on the recruiting trail. I also think Dino needs to come out and make a definitive statement that he's not going anywhere. I truly believe part of this years struggle is because we are being negative recruiting against saying Babers will be leaving.

- Is there a QB controversy? Welch isn't the better QB, but for this offense where we don't have an offensive line, being able to scramble is important. I think a dual threat would save us from the inevitable 3rd and long. The last few years we were so good in being in 3rd and short because Dungey's ability to scramble. We obviously lose a ton in the passing game, but Devito looks shell-shocked out there. He holds the ball too long, and he locks in on the primary receiver. If that's not open he is usually done. We just can't have that with such a bad OL. It seemed like the first few plays we ran were quick hitters and worked (or would have if WR's didn't drop the ball). Going to be interested to see what Dino does. Welch obviously shot some life into us, and Devito is playing banged up.

- How about the Ed Hendrix spotting? He was put in that 1 play to run a go down the sideline, but it looked like he slipped and the ball went 30 yards over his head. He promptly took his helmet off and went over to the sideline. If he's healthy is he good enough to play? He's the one guy we heard good things about. I wonder why he isn;t playing if he is healthy?

- It was good to see Cisco and Melfi back in the secondary. Sucks we lose Trill as soon as those guys get back, but we have a young, talented secondary. I don't think their talents are being maximized with the style we play, but they are still a massive improvement.

I think anybody would gladly take 6 wins and bowl right now. At 3-4 and getting the few guys we had injured back you would think that would be attainable. Unfortunately, i think it's a long shot we get there. I cant believe i am saying that considering where everyone was going into the Liberty game. That's frustrating.

That wasn't Hendrix #18. It was Sharod Johnson #19.

That's what I thought at first, but i was on the opposite side of the field and thought it was 18, plus that's what was announced. Mystery solved.

I thought it was No. 18.

Progress isn’t always linear
Exactly. Look at Purdue. At TCU. At Michigan State. At Kentucky. At Stanford. At Colorado.

All won 10+ in the last 3 years. All are struggling right now, just as we are.

This season has not gone as hoped, but let’s not act like SU football is Notre Dame. Oh wait, ND went 4-8 in 2016.

Welcome to sport. Now buckle up.

I actually thought it was a mistake when they announced Hendrix so I double checked and it actually looked like Hendrix too. Do we have confirmation it was in fact S Johnson and not Hendrix?

Not sure what your trying to get at? Comparing us over the last 20 years to Stanford, TCU, and Michigan St? That unfortunately is a losing argument. We could only hope in our wildest dreams to have had the success of those programs since the turn of the century . We are looking more and more like the flukey Kansas and Wake Forest Orange bowl teams that were 1 hit wonders.

We have won three games.
Liberty, Western Michigan, Holy Cross. We have one injury on the offensive line. ONE. We have Dinos top Recruit at QB. We have the best trio of running backs on the Hill in years. We have arguably as good a special teams group in the country.
What we lack are good assistant coaches. Its obvious the Oline coach needs to go. As to the others i would take a hard look at our WR coach and Martin.
As to Dino there is zero chance he fires his Daughters Father in law. Maybe he can coach a different position. On D leave it alone. Ward has done a good job this year and should have a solid D next year.

Good post. You make some excellent points, particularly on negative recruiting. However, nobody believes coaches where commitment is concerned. After this season that may go away.

Dino is an experienced head coach and this is where that counts. I trust he will make the tough decisions. I guarantee nobody is more disappointed and concerned than our HC.
Thanks for a measured and objective post.

Im on record that i believe Dino is the best coach for SU.
The one concern that i had when he was hired and that i have now is can Dino win with his recruits.
In the corporate world their are guys that are excellent at turning underperforming companies around. They are completely different than guys that build from the ground up.
Dino has never won with his players. He is a turnaround guy.
At this point for the first time in his coaching career Dino has to build a program with his recruits. This year he has failed. His hand picked and groomed QB is struggling. His Oline coach and offensive line players are not just being manhandled they are undisciplined, producing penalties at an alarming rate. If recruiting is to be measured by the rating services we are currently on pace to finish last in the ACC.
I hope that Dino has the moxie to make the changes required to become a program builder vs a turnaround artist as this is new territory for a coach who has made a career out of continuous change.

the team was 90% his recruits last year, Tommy has show that he can play at this level already, the talent near everywhere is up

I don’t think this theory holds much water

the OL is the glaring exception.

I agree except ward.
