Thoughts

The offensive line which was good last season, has regressed and as a result the entire team has taken a step back. The fault lies with them. It's like Manny Diaz said last night after their kicker poorly performed, there's no free agency in college football. All you can do is give them the help they need to get better. I do think there is going to be a concerted effort by Babers and co. to get lineman who can play at this level next season. He's already been on record as saying no one's job is safe. Those guys are on a short leash and he took the kid gloves off.

The d has been better than previous years but we should be even better than we are. As someone just said on another thread, we are not good in 3 rd and long situations cause they always have someone or many really wide open and the only times we get a stop is when they drop the ball. Why do we not play tighter.

On 3rd and long, they often go to a soft zone instead of pressing the receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Our WRs and OL went from average to awful. Trish isn’t even one of the returners everyone else has been in the system. We’ve needed more from the QB to play great and make up for this solid won’t cut it.

ACC is tough we looked great at times those 4-8 seasons but the wheels still came off at the end. Feels like the same thing is happening this year just no big wins first.

The OL was not good. Yes, it was much better than this mess but we still gave up a ton of sacks. The three years prior to this we were 110th, 105th, and 119th in sacks allowed per game. So if we improve to 100th for next year, will that be enough for DeVito to thrive?

Nonsense. Nobody is going to come calling now. They will wait to see if 2020 represents real progress.

Bizarre behavior? I imagine he is genuinely perplexed that his OL is arguably the worst in D1 football, especially as it is made up of his recruits.

The pool of potential coaching replacements on the carousel is small and one down year isn’t crushing Dino’s stock.

Furthermore the places where he’d say yes to an offer could be growing.

We have two different definitions of good and I'm not going to get into semantics with you. The rushing game was better, Dungey's health was vastly improved compared his first three years and Devito was kept upright against UNC and FSU (played well enough for the fanbase to call him the savior of the program). Give Devito this year's line to work behind and SU is probably 5-2 right now.

I disagree. With last year’s OL we still lose to MD, Clemson, and Pitt. We likely beat NC State. We certainly would look functional on O but we still would be mediocre. I think we make a Bowl game with last year’s OL but that is still below expectations for this season.

Running game from our RB’s was far better...though at least some of that was threat of Dungey running it.

Losing Iffy and playing Cordy who couldn't cover anyone hurt the defense. Cordy should have replaced Riley on returns. Every time Cordy has been in coverage they just throw it up and at 5-8 he can't stop the completion.

It was far better but it was still mediocre at best. Our RBs collectively averaged 5.04 ypc. Our best RB was 90th nationally in ypc. And as you said that is with the threat of Dungey.

No way. We gave up way too many sacks vs Pitt. That gets cleaned up even a little and we go and get another 14 points

Some of my favorite posts are when posters judge schools by the areas they are located in based on the same standards they care about as a 40 year old when looking for a home/job.

“Great weather, the economy is booming, the schools are fantastic, there’s a dog park down the street, gorgeous hiking trails nearby, and there’s a great youth soccer program!”
And have you tried that new tapas bar?

Ok we give up way too many sacks in every game, so you are saying that if we didn’t do what we do every game the result would be different

He won 10 games at SU, trust me he can get another D1 job without a problem regardless of how bad this year has gone.
Not at the same pay grade. There isnt a legitimate 5 program that can sell his buyout and record. They would laugh the AD off campus.

Agreed.

It's going to cost Wildhack a lot of money if Dino really commits to replacing poor performing coaches on his staff. Syracuse is already a hard enough sell. Combine that with SU football coming off a down year. And interviewing in Syracuse in January.

This narrative that we can’t find a good HC if Dino leaves or that we can’t get good coaches to come here and coach with Dino are ridiculous. There are a lot of worse places for coaches to go and do go, than SU. The university is sinking money into the program, they went and got a real coach, recent big time donation, carrier dome renovations, 10 wins last year.

Coaching at SU is a hard sell?

Ward has been good this year, not in love with rushing 3 or 4 on 3rd an long nearly everytime but the D has certainly done its part.

I have no issues with Ward but why did nobody on D take away Pickett moving to his right. It was mind boggling. They (SU D) even kept moving him that way by design even after he had been killing them.

The Syracuse football program has been, over the past 20ish years, in pretty bad shape.
There have been some good years but for a significant chunk of that time, SU has been either in the Bottom 10 or flirting with it.
So, yeah, I think there are a lot of more attractive options for hot coaches.

Yes, there are worse places to go to but, the number of worst places to go is a lot smaller when you're Syracuse.

My point wasn't to drag Syracuse football or to be the 'I'm-just-saying' guy. My point was to realistically address the fact that it's harder to attract the people you want working here. SU football is consistently a project. It's not a program that's been basking in success for years.

So, realistically, yeah, I think getting the coaches that you want at SU is likely a hard sell, especially considering this season's problems.

But what do I know. Maybe we'll hire Mike Leach this offseason.,
