SU Basketball APR at All-Time High; No Probation for You! (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse University's two prominent sports posted scores in the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate that will permit them to participate in the 2014-15 postseason.

The NCAA released its latest APR numbers today. Syracuse's men's basketball team registered a four-year score of 969. The football team scored 965.

Both were the highest scores ever posted for those SU sports since the NCAA started calculating the APR in 2004-05. SU's scores also beat the national averages of 957 for men's basketball and 956 for football.

To be eligible to participate in the post-season for the 2014-15 school year, the NCAA requires teams to post a four-year score of 930 or a two-year average of 940. Every Orange team reached that parameter.

"To see the consistent trend up in a challenging environment is tremendous," said SU athletic department chief communications officer Joe Giansante. "It's a credit to our coaches and our academic staff, in particular Tommy Powell, who has been a great addition to our staff."

Powell was hired from Iowa State last August as SU's assistant provost for academic development.

How Important Will This Week's NBA Combine Be for TE, JG and CJ? (PS; Ditota)

All three of Syracuse's potential NBA draft picks are in Chicago this week participating in the annual predraft combine.

Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant and C.J. Fair are among the 60 players who will subject themselves in varying degrees to tests administered by NBA people.

Ennis has reportedly decided not to participate in the basketball drills ESPN will televise on Thursday and Friday. Often, potential top picks skip the drills on the advice of their agents. But there's still plenty for him to do in Chicago.

In addition to those drills, players will be measured and put through a series of tests that gauge speed, agility and jumping ability. They will be examined by NBA doctors to determine any physical flaws. Of SU's three prospects, Grant missed game and practice time with a back issue last season. Doctors will judge the soundness of his back.

#1: The 2002-03 Team Finally Won the NCAA Tournament (PS; Waters)

NO. 1: 2002-03 TEAM
Overall record: 30-5
Conference record (finish): 13-3 (tie for 1st in Big East West division)
Postseason: Won NCAA championship

Best player: Carmelo Anthony

14937532-large.jpg

In 2002-03, Carmelo Anthony performed at a level only a few players in Syracuse history have ever reached. He averaged 22.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. The only other players who averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds in a season were Dave Bing, Bill Smith, Rudy Hackett and Billy Owens.

Anthony still holds the school's records for most points and most rebounds for a freshman. He was the Big East's Rookie of the Week 10 times. He was the easy choice for Big East Rookie of the Year. He led Syracuse in scoring 23 times. He had 22 double-doubles, including each of Syracuse's last three games in the NCAA tournament — 20 and 10 vs. Oklahoma, 33 and 14 vs. Texas and 20 and 10 vs. Kansas.

He was named Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four, the first freshman to earn that honor since Louisville's Pervis Ellison claimed the award in 1986.

#2: 2009-10 Team Was Headed to the Final Four Until Arinze Went Down (PS; Waters)

NO. 2: 2009-10 TEAM
Overall record: 30-5
Conference record (finish): 15-3 (1st in Big East)
Postseason: Lost to Butler in NCAA tournament's Sweet 16

Best player: Wes Johnson

Wes Johnson
Wes Johnson can thank Andy Rautins and Arinze Onuaku for this honor. Rautins' outside shooting and Onuaku's inside threat opened up the floor for the versatile Johnson. Rautins and Onuaku also carried the burden of team leadership, again freeing Johnson to do his thing on the court.

Johnson, a transfer from Iowa State who had sat out the previous season, led Syracuse in scoring at 16.5 points per game. He only took 123 3-pointers; half as many as Rautins attempted, but Johnson made 41.5 percent of them. Johnson also led Syracuse in rebounds (8.5 per game), he was second blocks and second in steals.

ACC News

UL Gets Superb Athlete with Chinanu Onuaku (rantsports.com; Philson)

The Louisville Cardinals were already thrilled when forward Montrezl Harrell decided to come back for his junior year after posting 14 PPG and 8.4 RPG last season. Harrell will only improve and could be a top-10 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Even better for coach Rick Pitino and Louisville fans will be the addition of Chinanu Onuaku as part of the excellent 2014 class coming in. Onuaku is considered a true center by all accounts on the defensive end not only because of his size at 6-foot-10 and 220 pounds, but also because of what he does with those measurements.

Scouts believe he will be able to step right in and be an absolute force and difference-maker on defense. The great thing about this for Pitino is that he likes to have teams run after turnovers and blocks. Harrell and Onuaku will change the game with their defense. That duo will flip the offense over in a hurry and make scoring opportunities more prevalent. Onuaku is also a very strong rebounder, and that will add even more to defensive run-outs and offensive rebounding scoring.

Remembering ACC's 12-10 Game (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

'This game has all the thrill'

The “Mouth of the South,” Bill Currie, had the duty of trying to call play-by-play in the 12-10 game. Not content just to say “Kretzer’s still dribbling,” or “He throws the ball over to Williford, and now he’s holding it,” Currie decided to start interviewing people in the crowd. Perhaps inspired by comments of some of the unhappy fans forced to watch this ultimate slowdown, Currie finally uttered one of the ACC’s most famous quotes: “This game has all the thrill of artificial insemination.

ADs Mull Potential NCAA Shift for P Conference Members (post-gazette.com; Werner)

...
One of the big topics at the ACC’s spring meetings this week was the potential changes to the NCAA governance structure. The Division I Board of Directors recently endorsed a new model. It will be officially voted on in August and one of the primary shifts would be to give the “power five” conferences — the ACC, Southeastern, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 more autonomy to create legislation.

“The whole idea here is that you would have some permissive legislation that would allow some schools to do things but not require everybody to do things,” Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. “So if we felt like, as five conferences, this is something we were really interested in doing, that if it made sense and we could pull it together, we could take it through the five without everybody voting on it.”
