This could not be a better time to show all recruits/HS coaches/parents out there that he and the staff aren't going anywhere for awhile.

We just announced we are leaving the BE early for the ACC next year.

Recruiting has improved (I know some will disagree) over the last 2 years.

It seems that the team is really starting to gel and look like a family.

NYC recruits are really starting to look at SU as their home team. "SwaggerCuse"

We got new facilities being built, with more planned down the road.

The only missing piece is Marrone, who's current contract ends after the 2013 season. It would show everyone out there that there is great stability in this program and would keep our assistants in place who have done good jobs building their recruiting beds. We have a ridiculous schedule this year, which will be harder next year once we add ACC opponents. A new coach is not going to help that at all. Marrone is the right guy for the job and is methodically digging SU out of the meteoric hole that Grubbers put us in.

I agree 100%. Get it done.

negative nancy agrees!

just leave yourself an out... dont give a paul hewitt golden parachute.

You need to TM "SwaggerCuse."

I'm in favor of a short extension. It appears to be in the program's best interests to be able to claim some stability.

Darryl just threw 7.5 million at the Big East. He should be able to up Doug's contract a bit and take care of Tyrone at the same time.

I said that last year and he rewarded me by losing 5 straight! That having been said, I am a big supporter of DM and would like to see him get an extension now. The timing would be good and would also make a statement that we are committed to a coach that is rebuilding the program from the ground up for the long term.

im all for stability... but doug doesnt deserve a raise, yet. That isn't a question.

If he wants he really wants a raise, then take the risk and negotiate after the year is over.

Are extensions without raises common? How does DM's salary (established for someone with no HC experience) rank with the other BE coaches? How will it rank with his competition in the ACC? Do we know anything about our staff salaries vs. what other ACC assistant coaches make?

I'd go with a short extension for DM (about 2 years), plus an increase in the salary pool for assistants. Let them focus on football matters through the transition and negotiate after a couple seasons in the new conference.

I would add a pay bump for Marrone, because that just seems like the decent thing to do. I agree with what you proposed above.

I'm glad we didn't extend Marrone after the WFVU win. I'm also glad that we didn't extend Marrone soon after the losing streak. If it will happen now seems like a good time to make a level headed decision.

Otto, your Mutant League Football avatar is pure awesome. Great game.

I don't know that I'd call it the best game ever made, but I recall many a fond lazy afternoon playing this with friends and laughing like crazy.

My avatar was either going to be from Mutant League or Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl.

I think most agree that recruiting has improved a great deal - at least it seems that we have improved the athletic make-up of the team a great deal in the last two years. And recruiting seems to be getting better this year, no doubt aided by the move to the ACC.

Marrone was perhaps two or three plays away from a second straight bowl game last year.

Yes, he deserves a raise and an extension.

I would prefer Otto as a snarling dog

We had to get 1 of these... :)

I think you miss the point of why extending a contract is done mid-contract.

We would need to see if he is still available and wants to work for SU again since this board fired him at the end of last season. :D

I am obviously in the minority here, but I don't think he's earned an extension just yet. Agreed that recruiting has improved dramatically and that he is directly responsible for the pipeline to NYC. He has also completely changed the culture of the team.

HOWEVER...last season's slide is still fresh in my mind. IMO, I still have serious questions about Doug's ability to make crucial game-day decisions. He's made more than a few questionable calls that have directly cost us games.

I could be convinced that he deserves a short extension (3 yrs) and modest bump in pay ($250k/yr) for him...along with a bump ($75k/yr) for the assistants. But he most certainly has not earned a long term extension nor a substantial raise.

if they give him an extension they are out of their minds. He hasn't earned one and has yet to prove he is even a good head coach. Sorry, the Pinstripe Bowl isn't enough.

If this year ends up being rough (ie 2 or 3 wins) and it has the possibility to be, then you don't want to be tied in long-term with Doug. Doug needs to win a few games and put together a back to back winning season campaign before he gets an extension. With 2 years left on his deal the time is now! Otherwise, time to start looking.

He's 17-20 with a 6-15 record in the weakest BCS conference. Chances are he's going to be right at .500 or lower again this year. I don't see what he's done to deserve a raise let alone an extension.

I am for the stability... I am for telling Doug he has a few years to get this going.

He has done nothing to earn a raise...

This is not being negative.

It will take Marrone two more years to put together back-to-back winning seasons. Are you advocating that Marrone should enter the 2013 season without an extension?

It would be almost impossible for Marrone or his staff to recruit next summer if they don't know whether or not they'll have jobs at the end of the season. Recruits won't commit to a school when they don't know who they'll be playing for.

Nobody goes into the last year of their contract twisting in the wind. Marrone has to be given an extension by the end of this season, or he'll be bought out. See Coach P in 2004, and GRob in 2008.

Barring a disaster of GRobian proportions (2-10 or worse), Marrone will get his extension by the end of the 2012 season.

I am advocating Doug better win this year or else I would have no problem with moving on. Doug has been an awful in-game coach in his 3 years at SU and unless something changes and he actually WINS more games, I see no reason to keep him around and "hope" things change under him.

That is fair enough. This program is about to take off so I think we will either do it now or later - later will cost more.
