Time for Marrone to get an extension

It will take Marrone two more years to put together back-to-back winning seasons. Are you advocating that Marrone should enter the 2013 season without an extension?

It would be almost impossible for Marrone or his staff to recruit next summer if they don't know whether or not they'll have jobs at the end of the season. Recruits won't commit to a school when they don't know who they'll be playing for.

Nobody goes into the last year of their contract twisting in the wind. Marrone has to be given an extension by the end of this season, or he'll be bought out. See Coach P in 2004, and GRob in 2008.

Barring a disaster of GRobian proportions (2-10 or worse), Marrone will get his extension by the end of the 2012 season.
Coach Mac surprised us.

Coach P surprised us.

It's time for Coach Marrone to surprise us.

I want 8 or 9.

Its gonna happen, and I think this year. I'm very bullish about this team. Most excited I've been in a long time. It just feels like everything is going to come together this year. And I'm saying this with some pretty obvious question marks at DE and OL for example. Just a feeling -- and they are very often right

Once he hits 6 wins this season (hopefully there's an off week 8-9 games in when this happens) extend him for 3 years. Make a bowl and possibly bump the salary by 10-20%... after The season.

No way

No bowl this year working out of the weakest conference, and two more losses to ucant and Rutgers and I look to make a move.

Take some ACC money and get a real coach.

Just because he's better than Grob doesn't make him BCS worthy...the experiment has failed...

Just my opinion. We should be seeing results by now and we aren't.

Table this idea until we break the 5 game losing streak and the season record is above water.

And not just against Stony Brook.

Lots of positives (NYC recruiting), but still . . .

I think that it is almost impossible for gross to give Doug an extension coming off the epic collapse of last season. Simply put how would he justify that? I truly believe that if Doug had made a bowl last year he would have been given a three year extension but gross has his hands tied at this point. If Doug does ok this year lets say 5 wins or better i think he gets an extension. I have no idea what gross will do if we have a disaster lets say 4 wins or less. At that point i think that gross has the toughest decision of his time on the Hill and who knows Doug may just resign. I for one hope that he makes it as i believe he is a good head coach a good CEO type of head coach. I do not believe he is a good college OC nor do i believe he is much more than average on game day as he is slow to make changes his stubborn nature tends to keep him in a poor game plan too long. In the end if he doesnt make it he will have failed in my opinion simply because he didnt hire a proven OC. Lets hope he wins 5 or more this year and gets a solid extension.

I hope Doug wins 6 or 7 games and turns into a solid head coach. BUT, if this year is an epic failure though (and with this schedule it could easily be)...Steve Addazio come on down!!

Darryl just threw 7.5 million at the Big East. He should be able to up Doug's contract a bit and take care of Tyrone at the same time.
as i have posted before he needs 3yr extension and increse is assistants salary

I agree i think that Steve would be at or near the top of our list

I think he would be the entire list this time honestly

I'm am very down on this team. Most down I have felt going into a season ever (GRob's last year was a waste so it doesn't count). That being said I still think we should give Marrone a 2 year extension. I highly doubt that he gets fired after this season. And you cannot have him coach next season without an extension. So he WILL get an extension. The question is when is the best timing. IMO that is NOW. Waiting until after the season could make it more difficult. The fanbase usually is positive at the start of the season. We just announced the ACC giving us all a warm and fuzzy feeling. Recruiting seems to be going well. That all makes it the perfect time to pull the trigger. IMO chances are we have a losing record this year. Who knows if we keep all of these recruits. So why risk waiting to extend?

Here's a hypothetical: Marrone get's a contract extension. The team then goes 4-8. Recruits jump ship and things start spiraling out of control. Gross realizes he needs to make a change to start off on the right foot in the ACC. But because of the extra $1.1m on the books for the next 3 years he is handcuffed and has to higher a less established (cheaper) candidate. Then we are right back to where we started.

If we get 9 wins it will be one of the greatest coaching performances of all time.

Extreme is correct the decision will be made shortly after the season is over. The key for Doug is 5-7 anything worse then that and he will likely be in big trouble, anything matching that or better he will get the extension no problem.

I can see 5 wins being the Mendoza line for an extension

I don't really see why they wouldn't just extend him now. Buy low, ensure a manageable buy-out, give the appearance of stability within the program. It's 3-for-3 as far as I am concerned.

Agreed. If i were Gross i would offer Doug a 3 year extension now with the following provisions. If you achieve a winning season the extension and the buy out are better than the current contract. If you obtain 5 wins the buy and extension are the same as the current contract. Anything less than 5 wins and the salary stays the same but the buyout is reduced.

Agreed. I would be surprised to see us have less than 4 Ws this year. I also woudl be surprised to see us get more than 6 Ws. So if we are likely in the 4-6 W range, wouldn't it be better to extend now? I cannot see him getting fired for 4-8. Makes more sense to extend now than after that happens.

I've yet to be convinced as to why he deserves an extension. Off the top of my head his record is mediocre in the weakest BCS league, our attendance sucks, recruiting isn't as great as some people seem to think, only 5 players were drafted in the last 3 years, he isn't exactly great with the media, and he lost the team last year.

He needs to be extended or fired after this year. Even if he deserved to be fired, I cannot see SU pulling the trigger. So might as well get it out of the way now vs extending after a 3-9 season.

He's taken the worst program in the BCS at the time he took over and improved it substantially. He won almost as many games in his second year as the program did in the entire previous staff.

The roster is better top to bottom. The coaching staff is better top to bottom. The team is more competitive than it has been in a long time. I don't think you realize just how bad they were.

Why is it on him how many kids have been drafted the last three years?

I get what you are saying about the stability. But put his recruiting and morale achievements aside for a moment.

Is the team in a better place now than it was under GRob? Sure. But what else has Marrone done? Deliver a mediocre record in a VERY mediocre conference? That isn't good enough for me. I'm not a fan of rewarding mediocre.

My feeling is that coaching played a MAJOR role in last season's slide. (this alone is my biggest concern with offering an extension) HCDM was brought in to win and return some prominence to the program. Granted, we aren't listed on ESPN's "Bottom 10" any longer. But as of today, he's yet to prove (to me anyways) that he's warranted an extension of any kind.

The 2012/13 season isn't a throwaway year. Its the most important year of Doug's tenure at SU.

And you don't think its fair to let him get all of his guys on campus? You remember who preceded him, right? He did win 8 games in year 2. He's not getting fired barring a 2 win type season (which ain't happenin')
