Time to Draw the Curtain on the Desko Era

If things get so bad that we have to get rid of Desko, then we might get a total house cleaning. The only way that Donahue gets the job would be if Desko "steps down" for personal reasons and we can keep the rest of the staff.

Wilbur from OCC is interesting, but can he recruit with the higher academic standards?

I don't know if Wilbur could but you have to figure he would be able to tap into OCC and the JUCO ranks at will. He would need a good recruiter, perhaps a former player like Banks etc. I dont know if SU would do a total housecleaning, making Donahue the head coach would probably go a long way to keep the alumni happy if Desko was ultimately forced out. Either way Desko is getting at least another year no matter what happens and theres a lot of young talent returning next year while teams like Duke, ND, Hopkins graduate a lot of their best players.

This is fair, but why were they so effective at getting the Nims', Abbott's, Hardy's to come here if they are still paying a 40,000 tuition bill. I just think that we are over thinking this. Desko is clearly either recruiting poorly, or he is recruiting fine and not developing the players to the level they need to be at.

If I had all the answers, I'd be working for the UN.

Why would a kid pick another school over us? Immediate playing time? Kid wants a degree in a program we don't offer? Kid doesn't want to play indoors in February?

Our recruiting certainly isn't what it used to be.

If 5 of our top 6 scorers are from NY, then I guess we haven't totally given up on NY kids after all. But there doesn't appear to be anyone as talented as Nims/Hardy/Abbott/White on a Sec 3 roster this year.

Know where LI's top rated recruit is going? Yale. How do you talk a kid out of an Ivy education? Especially if his grades are good enough for him to get a full academic scholarship.

Of all these kids you said we "lost" ... how many did we offer a partial scholarship to and they turned us down because they couldn't afford close to a $40,000 tuition bill?

How many did we truly ignore?

If you could provide a list of all the kids we chased after and didn't get and all the kids you claim we never bothered to contact, that would be appreciated.

I have told you in person in the past kids we ignored.I not going to start throwing Names out just to make you happy. My nephew was very close friends with a current big time player now and according to him we didn't recruit him hard at all. Wilbur and Desko are not on talking terms. Rodgers from SU and Gatto from OCC WHO I grew up with his father do all the talking about OCC players. local AAU coaches hate the idea of young kids committing before their Jr. years as late bloomers are getting screwed on scholarship offers and kids who peak too early college coaches are afraid to resend their offers over fears of pissing off AAU coaches.

How many local High school coaches do you know personally? How many AAU coaches do you know personally? My wife is still a local High school teacher at a few different high schools so either I played with them or know them from her or other contacts.

As for the tuition issue i know for a fact the staff goes around and disperses funds on a need basis. They tell one kid we will pay for your books,others they say we will give you a few thousand in tuition expenses and so on.They give them academic ships in various amounts along with other grants they qualify for. My kids who are Marcellus athletes are good friends with an SU current player who played Lax with him.My oldest anyways.

My Grandmother was a half mohawk who owned a home on rt.11a in Nedrow so I know few either by Box when I played 35 years ago and I brought an Uncle of a recent player to few football games in the last 2 to 3 years.The Six Nation kids would not be going to 'cuse if the Reservation was located father way and not giving out full rides to them. They flat out don't like Desko.as a coach,Simmons yes.

Who do you hire?

Tierney isn't leaving Denver.
Petro isn't leaving Hopkins.
Pressler isn't leaving Bryant.

We're not getting Danowski or Breschi or Tillman, and I'm not sure anyone would want Starsia.

So who's left ... someone who's never won on the big stage before?

Do you want to trust the program to someone who doesn't "get" Syracuse LAX? It'll be GRob all over again.

There are a lot of good coaches out there. 2 that immediately come to mind would be Andy Shay at Yale and Tambroni at Ped State. And I dont want to hear about Tambroni never leaving Penn State. Tambroni is a Genny kid, he'd absolutely listen. Shay is an upstate kid who went to LeMoyne.

There are some very good D3 coaches. I don't know if Steve Beville could handle the job but he's a Genny kid and has coached some outstanding D3 teams and has a title with Cortland State.

One last thing to add. I think coaching is the problem, but it might be time for Desko to just evaluate Rogers and the defense. I think thats where the majority 0f the problems are. They can still score goals.
