Last 10 years, assuming we are counting this year...

197-122, 1 Natty, 4 tourney apps (prob 5 this year)

196-127, 1 Final Four, 2 Sweet 16s, 5 tourney apps

Hmmmmmm...yeah
Two SU Final Fours, and an Elite Eight in 2012, UConn has yet to win an NCAA game under Hurley.

His demeanor to the press has barely changed over 40 years. The only reason it’s “news” now is that it fits a narrative the media and some fans want to promote, that he’s a mean old man presiding over a fading program. Criticizing the results is fine, playing the narrative game is not.
As far as criticizing results, be prepared for pushback that the Last ten years of misery have included two Final Fours, an Elite Eight and a Sweet Sixteen, as well as five NBA first rounders and four second rounders. Perhaps folks would rather have UConn’s or GTown’s results over that period.
It was also news in the past. Today’s social media helps spread it further though and also creates more “accountability” for such actions.

He treated the adult reporter just how he treats other, local, adult reporters.
People seem to be up in arms because he is a “student reporter”. A whole lot of Snowflake projection going on.
JB is making this kid famous, and probably securing him a good first job, as the guy who got under Jim Boeheim’s skin.
JB could/should have been better, but honestly, this handwringing on this is a bit over the top.
You honestly think it was a net positive for JB to handle that reporters question like that? You actually think it will help that reporter in the job market?

Again, the downplaying of JBs actions, and coaching success of recent is fascinating. What is possibly the upside of allowing this to keep happening?

As joe Rogan once said about a different situation, but applies to this. In regards to keeping boeheim as coach “it’s like having a flashlight with a dying battery and going for a long hike in the woods, it’s not going to workout well”

I remember 2011. Donna asked him why he couldn’t beat Pitino.

There is a huge difference JB doing this now compared to a decade ago. Social media is massive now. The fact that this hits Barstool brings a ton of additional eyes to the story. 10 years ago no one hears about this outside of Sportscenter. And again, that’s assuming someone happened to catch the 45sec clip of being it talked about. Now with social media and barstool, this story gets a ton more eyes by people who probably would not had heard about this story 10yrs ago.

It is a lot more negative attention now. Not to mention JBs “sarcasm” isn’t typically appreciated by this generation.

In the words of Andre Agassi in those early 90s commercials, "Image is everything"

JB is the image of the program and huge part of SU as he leads the flagship program (that of course he built on his work and success) of the University. SU bball is one of the first things that come to mind in association with the University. That along with Newhouse and alums Costas, Tirico, etc. the Dome, Ernie Davis, etc.

It is in the best interests to project a positive image. That press conference is not just to the 9 people in that press room. Today, a bad presser itself becomes news and can make the program and University look bad.

When it gets played on SVP Sportscenter and Barstool, Big Lead, Outkick, NY Post make it a news article, its a bad look. Compound that with the sad state of affairs on the court, reasonable people need to start asking, why are we keeping you here? Like I said, you can beat any repercussions when your winning 25+ games, but when your mediocre and average it becomes an issue.

I know opposing fans, and probably even media members behind the scenes, are laughing at this. This is how you make your program a joke, when there is no leadership to reign in a coach that's way past his prime and continues to make himself look bad. You got to start thinking big picture on this.
Oh no, not Big Lead and Outkick!

The only people keeping this story alive are a few people on here and handful of other Syracuse fans.

It’s not that the sarcasm isn’t appreciated. I’m this generation and love sarcasm. It’s the fact an EXTREMELY valid question was asked and that’s the response. It’s not like he said “well screw the game no one cares about the guys actually playing” then went on to answer. That’s acceptable sarcasm to me. He was just a grumpy curmudgeon.

Snowflake? Oy vey with that.

Again, JB has been a d.!.ck in press conferences for a long time. Many of you have yucked it up. Personally, I always found it embarrassing. It's not the biggest thing in the world, nor is any rational person saying it warrants consequences.

But hey, I'm sure some of you will be first in line when it's time to critique a 19 year old because "this generation is entitled and soft". I mean there's nothing soft about a notoriously thin-skinned Hall of Famer who gets off on treating some people like crap, right? No entitlement in thinking he's above taking a question that he himself said would be answered a mere 3 hours earlier.

It's punching down and it sucks.

ACC Final Four teams since 2012:
UNC 3
Duke 2
Syracuse. 2
UVa 1
Louisville. 1(vacated)

That SU FF is aging very quickly just like the lack of being ranked or having a protected seed or having a top 10 recruiting class.

Cherry picking the 2016 run out doesn't really support the argument. That was truly the last real celebratory event. Since then the sweet 16 runs have been fun but they were all we have had to hang onto and the result of sneaking into the tournament. Just the same as it warrants acknowledging these runs you can't ignore the bad losses, the consistent double digit loss seasons and the acceleration of our struggles starting with 19-20. That 20-21 season was fun at the end and then we couldn't keep the roster together.

Being a jerk can be easy for some to compartmentalize if the team is winning. But when it isn't, it just compounds the losing and makes the program look worse. I don't know how much recruits care about how Boeheim treats the media, but history shows that if you're a player doing what Boeheim wants you to do, he'll defend you every chance you're questioned, and sometimes that defense will come out in the form of lashing out against media members even when the questions are fair.

It's also a lot easier to be as reactive as JB is when the local media is so dependent on the program for subscriptions and clicks. He holds the P-S in the palm of his hand, and not just Mike Waters and Donna Ditota. That's the reality when you're as big as Boeheim is and you're the only game in town, at least when the football team isn't winning 8+ games.

Well said!! Everything is under a microscope today and social media is fertile to make mountains out of mole hills. "Sarcasm not appreciated by this generation" is a great point. JAB's long career and track record does not mean a thing to today's "I want it now" generation. They will get their change soon enough. I hope they are as ready to accept change as they are quick to demand it.

One of the more perplexing things for people upset with the criticism and continuously talking about the youth and others holding higher expectations is that it's at odds with things JB said pre season.

He absolutely looked at this as a tourney team and one that should hopefully be more firmly in. He pointed out Benny being better and improving. He pointed out how underrated Joe is and Jesse really turning into a good player. He pointed out this freshman class being one of the best he's had.

So when everyone throws youth around as the excuse- you have two all acc seniors, a rising sophomore and a top 30 frosh PG and coach has been clear on the fact that can make for a better team and a tournament team... it feels like the fact all that was actually covered by the coach himself is some kind of fake news or irrelevant to the direct thoughts and criticisms.

JB says things yes- but these early comments were not insignificant.

Also you don't pair Joe and Jesse with a player as talented as Judah and be oh well let's just hope we don't have a losing season. That group is out there to win. Layer the defense comments as well and the mtm that was given barely anytime to develop and then enduring a zone that's getting sliced and diced by open shooters.

Based on the actions and comments from coach himself, the expectations of a progressive year were already set.

Lastly pointing to youth and then saying next year etc etc etc just isn't the reality anymore. Attrition is a yearly expectation now so you have to be putting a team that can win now not hoping the foundation stays in place. That's a big ask- just like keeping up in the NIL race is for which we can thank AW for going all in on.

The criticism therefore I think is more than fair both in looking over the past decade as well as in the moment, in a new normal.

There seems a good chance the coverage this relatively minor news conference incident received is going to get some people thinking about a bigger underlying story:
How a Hall of Fame coach built one of he best programs in the country and in his final years is destroying his own legacy.
