I am as big of a CJ Fair fan as anyone. Loved what he brought to the table from day 1, one of my all time favorite players to watch and root for, and he was very good. But he's not #12. I don't think he's top 20. Flynn, D. Johnson, W. Johnson, Thompson, GMac, Etan, Orr, Addison, MCW, there's a lot of guys over the years.

And yeah, I think Owens has to be top 6. I think he's got the right guys in the top 5, but Owens has to be 6. He was a better player than Wallace and Seikaly. He was on the same level as Coleman and Melo really but given that he didn't go to a title game or win the title, it's fair to rank him slightly lower than those guys.

Agreed

Whereas I love CJ to death, for that 12 spot, an argument could be made (in no particular order) for Sweet D, Leo Rautins, GMac, Raf, Shumpert, (underrated) Dave Johnson, and probably a few more.

No problem with the first 11 (just their inclusion, not necessarily the order).

These lists always have a bias in favor of what you did in the tournament, and the fact is, Billy was a great talent, but "his" team was one of the worst flame outs we ever had. And he had only been a complimentary player on the previous two teams. He was a great player, but did not come up clutch in the big moment compared to what we expected of him. He and Alonzo Morning were co #1s in that class. Who had the better career?

Complimentary player? Freshman year he had 3 very established players, and he still carved out his own niche. He was in no way shape or form a complimentary player his Soph. year

Not sure you can call a guy who averaged 18.2 pts, 8.4 reb., and 4.6 assists a complimentary player. He was one of the best players in the country as a soph.

Freshman year, OK. Though he was a heck of a player that year too. We just happened to have 3 of our best players ever as upperclassmen, and Billy was unselfish and versatile enough to just kind of do whatever was needed. He took a backseat overall, but stepped up often and was arguably the best player on the floor in certain games.

Yes, Billy's Junior team flamed out in the tournament. I'd say it had more to do with Michael Edwards being a starter than anything Billy did wrong. But yeah, he didn't carry them to the W in that Richmond game like we hoped.

Alonzo Mourning's teams went out in round 2 his soph, Junior, and Senior years...so I wouldn't say he had a better career than Billy at all.

CJ Fair really? You lose all credibility with that choice. You must also be young

Wallace was a much better player than Billy Owens

When he played at SU, first it was Sherman's team, then it was Coleman's team. When it was Billy's turn, after a sensational regular season, then they lost to a not-so-good Nova team in the first round of the Big East tournament, when we thought they were favored to win it, and then they lose to Richmond, in a historically bad upset, worst ever to that point for a top 4 seed.

Exactly, he was like a more talented Brandon Triche. He was like Wes Johnson, in a way; too nice a guy in some ways.

Raffael Addison was the best shooter in SU history. Unfortunately there was o 3 point line then.

Again you must be young. Your list could include players like Louis Orr, Dennis Duval, Dale shakelford and Eric Santifer

You can say it was Coleman's team all you want, that doesn't make Owens a complimentary player on that team

Fair points but I would not call him a complimentary player as a soph. As for that loss to Richmond well Billy had plenty of company from SU guys in the 80s that had poor NCAA performances.

Strongly disagree. Billy was a much better ball handler, and a much better passer. He could do more.

Wallace was a great Orangeman. Great career, amazing senior year and tourney run. But he couldn't do as many things as well as Owens could.

Arguing Wallace vs. Owens is like arguing McNamara vs. Matt Roe.

One guy put up unbelievable numbers and was very talented.
The other guy had balls and delivered in the clutch. They became the legends.

I would put Wallace just underCarmello Anybony. He was much more dominant that Owens was and its. It close. He carried a team on his back to the championship game. Owens could have never done that.

Is Matt Roe the one with the unbelievable #s, very talented, had balls or delivered in the clutch?

Matt Roe does not belong in the same sentence as GMAC. Matt Roe was slightly better than Trevor Cooney and that's about it.

Teams win. Wallace was the star, but they don't win without Sims. Otis Hill ate NBA big guys for lunch against Kansas and Miss. St. Burgan, I believe had 19 points in both final 4 games. Your role players gotta produce too for a team like that to make a run.
