Top 12 Syracuse basketball players of all time

Arguing Wallace vs. Owens is like arguing McNamara vs. Matt Roe.

One guy put up unbelievable numbers and was very talented.
The other guy had balls and delivered in the clutch. They became the legends.

Wait...so Matt Roe had unbelievable numbers and was very talented? Hmm. Pretty limited role player IMO. Very good at one thing. McNamara was both way more talented and way more clutch.

There's just gotta be a better example for the analogy you're going for.

Did you ever watch Billy Owens in college, like once?
Probably every game he played. Wallace was a lot better. His senior season is without doubt the best season any SU player has had in the past 40 years with possible exception of Anthony

Troll job at it's finest

By the way, Gerry's junior and senior teams both went out in round 1 too.

Dude, Owens averaged 23 and 12 his junior year. Those are insane numbers. What the heck are you talking about?

Statistically, it's better than Wallace's senior year and Melo's freshman year.

Mike Edwards was not Billy Edelin or Z Sims though.

Wallace had similar numbers and took his team to the NC game. Billy was highly skilled but he just didn't take over games like Wallace did. Wallace was so clutch

Wallace was clutch and had that incredible confidence in himself and his team, for sure.

I don't see how you can average 23 and 12 and NOT take over games. Billy took over and dominated many games.

You say you watched every game of Owens, yet make a comment that he didn't take over games. That in itself is laughable

I have no problem with the list other than #12, so it's not worth knocking the last spot, for me anyhow. Give the OP some likes, as he did save use from having to go through one of those annoying slideshows, seriously.

So many good/great players have worn the Orange. If we want to think of a guy who lived in the shadows of other greats, Stevie Thompson comes to mind. Check this out: "He played phenomenally well in the NCAA tournament, hitting 68% of this field goal attempts in the fifteen tournament games he played". He left as the 4th highest scorer in team history. Again folks, so many good players to choose from, no need to bash other Orange(men).

Stevie was so fast. That guy was always running the floor for dunks.

Billy was very good He is top 5 for sure

Indeed! That little guy could FLY. I just found this dunk reel that has a lot of the guys listed in the OP. The first 2 or 3 minutes is all 1 Indiana game. It's seems like there were more SU dunks in that game than maybe 7 of today's games. Stevie was so fun to watch, and he's the recipient of the Sherman Douglas hike in that game/this video.

How about that Sherm reverse dunk as icing on the cake vs Georgetown? When was the last time this team had icing on the cake vs a quality opponent like that? It's also fun watching Boeheim(hair already gone) yelling at his players to get back on defense.

Whereas I love CJ to death, for that 12 spot, an argument could be made (in no particular order) for Sweet D, Leo Rautins, GMac, Raf, Shumpert, (underrated) Dave Johnson, and probably a few more.

No problem with the first 11 (just their inclusion, not necessarily the order).
Well, Greg "kid" kohls was pretty good. Imagine him w/ the three point line.

I'd take Wallace over Owens, as well. Stats aren't part of the argument. Different teams, different competition. I preceded Billy at SU. Lovedd him, but he frustrated me with his jumper. I always thought he was 'too nice/conscientious' to maximize his scoring. Wallace was a killer.

But, whatever. We had them both. Part of the 'rich tapestry.'

Nobody's got Kohl or Shayes?

Dave Siock, anyone?

Raffael Addison was the best shooter in SU history. Unfortunately there was o 3 point line then.

Again you must be young. Your list could include players like Louis Orr, Dennis Duval, Dale shakelford and Eric Santifer

I agree, it's between Raf and Greg Kohls, although Raf fell off his senior year when Boeheim tried to play him out at guard on offense.

Matt Roe does not belong in the same sentence as GMAC. Matt Roe was slightly better than Trevor Cooney and that's about it.

47.4% from three begs to differ with you.

Owens had 22 points on 9-19 shooting against Richmond. He did his job.

Think of all the late game isolations with Billy dribling 25-30 feet from the basket, above the top of the key, and then trying to dribble past a smaller, quicker defender. He was a great player within the offense, but he was not very good at closing out those end of the half or end of game possessions, notwithstanding their record.
