Top SU dunks?

My favorite DC dunk was at Georgetown, a little like the Jonny Flynn dunk. At the elbow, faced up, overpowered the guy down the lane and slammed it. It was downright frightening! Awesome that it was against Georgetown.

At the three minute mark:
I was gonna say. There's a Cuse dunk highlight reel on youtube

I just broke out the VCR for the first time in years. My winter project was to clean out and paint basement. Contents 95% kids toys that were played with an average of 5 minutes each. But in one drawer of toys I found a VHS tape that I thought I had lost.

When I attended a televised SU game I always taped the game to watch the next day. Most of the game tapes were lost or taped over but there was one tape I cherished and saved due to the awesome dunks.

Georgetown at Syracuse February 8, 1993! John Wallace and Othello Harrington were both freshman. Big Monday - those were the days.
Neither team ranked though.

Dick Vitale and Brad Nessler on the mics.

First SU possession a nasty dunk from McRae.

Around 17 minute mark Georgetown presses. Autry throws it up court to Wallace then to Moten who lobs to McRae for an awesome one handed throw down. One of my favorite dunks ever. It was a sick lob where McRae looked like he posed before throwing it dow

Vitale: Oooh, Oooh, They got away with a sensational one. Maybe that will get the crowd up. I really question that decision right there Brad but they got away with it. That was a la Sherman Douglas to Derrick Coleman - DC with the jam

Brad Nessler: McRae had to call the flight tower to see if he could land after that one

Vitale: Ooh, I like that line

A minute later Moten throws a no look to McRae for another of his signature McNasty dunks.

Georgetown comes down court and Moten steals and throws it ahead to Mike Hopkins for a two handed jam. 16-6 Cuse to start the game which they won.

I have tried over the years to find this game on YouTube but was never able to. Maybe someone has a better grasp of their search algos and can find and post.

Did I mention the commercials. Jordan Bird Horse game for a Big Mac. Curly Neil Budweiser commercial.

Loved McRae! Wish there was more on YouTube from that era. Last spring we had a thread where morvill was posting all kinds of old games on YouTube, but his channel is gone now so YouTube must’ve shut it down. It’s a shame. He shared all kinds of gold that hadn’t been seen in years. Not sure if ‘93 GTown was one of them or not though.

The best dunker on the hill was Red Bruin. Warrick was a close second. Tony would take off dribbling baseline and the whole crowd would start getting excited. The amazing thing would be that he would jump off both feet, dunk with both hands and almost stretch out horizontally. He had a few against DePaul that left me speechless.
I remember one by Red Bruin (and I could be wrong) against Ewing on the baseline, in the Dome. I can’t find it.

JB talks about one in practice when Dave Johnson did a 360 from the FT line. JB says he ended practice when that happened.

I was rewatching our 2003 game against Oklahoma tonight and in the first few minutes Warrick has a beautiful baseline jam but he steps out of bounds and it’s waved off. I love it because it’s an early statement for a team that traditionally is a slow starter offensiveply.

2003 Against ND in the Dome. Hakim had just a monster dunk in one quick move down the lane. I only remember this because the game was replayed a couple of weeks ago. Just phenomenal athleticism and aggression.

That spin move. Incredible play.

Back in the 80's Villanova had a center named John Pinone. I called him "Elbows Pinone" because that was his primary offensive weapon. He'd get the ball and use his elbows to clear his way to the basket, flip it in and the refs would call the closest Syracuse player for a foul, giving Elbows and "and one". There was no player on any other team we hated more.

Andre Hawkins, a power forward who had bene asked to play center because we were unable to recruit Sam Perkins, and who thus was perennially considered a disappointment, (his weight didn't help him either), got the ball about 20 feet from the basket. Elbows can out to guard him. Andre got a a step on him and Elbows followed him all the way to the basket. Andre jumped and managed to make it to the basket, where he turned and threw it down violently. The ball came whistling through the cords and landed on Elbow's noggin, bouncing about 5 feet in the air, to the delight of everyone in the Dome.

Yup, Pinone used to drive me crazy. I was less charitable back then. He was known simply as “fat John Pinone.” The Hawk was great!

He played offense like he had the hands of a 5’10 man.

Tough defender/rebounder though.

Everything but the hands/touch. He had really underrated footwork and a high basketball IQ (don't laugh).

All that, plus the athleticism...but it's hard to play the game when you can't consistently catch the ball.

BTW, after all these years and all our technological advances, it's a shame that the internet has like 3 Dave Johnson dunks. And none of the really spectacular ones.

At the time of the Hak Notre Dame dunk I was stationed at Fort Stewart, GA. I was amazed that the next morning before physical training Hak's dunk was the hot topic of conversation. None of them had any connection to Syracuse at all.

Kris Joseph dunk at the end of this clip was a couple feet inside the free throw line. Like 2:54.
Under mentioned dunk.

Can’t catch and would weirdly swish a 15 footer and then airball the next one.
