How much does AA pay out to teams in the tourney? Yesterday in the USA Today they had an article that said each winning team in the play in game gets "1 unit (over the course of 6 years)". It said each unit is 1.5 million. Does that means they pay it out over 6 years? ($250,000 / year)? That seems like an awfully small amount especially if the team has to share it with the conference. Why spread it out. It's not like they don't have the money. The TV contract alone is huge not to mention how other rights.

Yeah I read somewhere that Wichita St actually lost money making it to the Final 4, due to travel budget, etc...even after getting the cut that FF teams get. Much was due to the payout schedule

IIRC the credits you earn during the Tourney pay each year for 6 years. You earn one credit for every game you play up until the championship game for a total of 6 units max per year IIRC.

Each game a team plays in the Tourney earns one credit, worth around $250K. The Units pay each year for 6 years, meaning IF you win one game in the Dance your "total earnings" are about $1.5M if you're an independents. If your school belongs to a Conference, the Conference divides the monies. The ACC gives every member an equal share of the unit payouts FWIW.

Where it really adds up comes from schools making the Dance, winning and advancing to the title game. Get there and you've put aside about $9M. To put it terms of Conferences I think the old BE paid out a total of around $25M in the last year while the ACC paid out about $21M.

Why do they do the pay outs over a 6 year period instead of all at once. Many schools could use the windfall immediately more than over time. And do you know if the lower conferences require the schools to share? I mean does a school like Albany St have to share it's $250,000 with like 9 other school (however many it their conference). Like you say, $25,000 hardly covers expenses.

It's called investment income. You make the payout, but invest the money till you have too, and collect on interest, dividends and capital gains.

Same principle as a lottery, and the reason you get so much less if you take the cash. In this case, the NCAA doesn't give that option.

the NCAA provides the money for travel i thought. if a school is loosing money they must be sending more people than the NCAA budgets for
