Award winning basketball writer Mike Waters of the Post-Standard stopped by the chat room Monday to talk Syracuse basketball. Many thanks to him for answering a staggering number of questions so quickly.

Here is the transcript.

cto: ok tomcat ... explain how this will work
Me: A couple of things. You can't just ask a question. If you have a question, just type a ? mark. That will let me know you want in, and I will put you in the queue. When it is your turn, I will tell you. At that point, ask your question using ALL CAPS.
TexanMark: ?
Jake: ?
cliftonparksufan: ?
SUFan44: ?
Me: Do not ask a question without getting the okay first. Do not just type comments or chatter during the chat either. The focus is on the questions and Mike's answers.
cto: tomcat... ready for lift 0ff
Mike Waters: Oh crap. Dasher's here. Good night, everybody!
Me: Mark is up first.
TexanMark: SURPRISE FRESHMAN THIS YEAR OTHER THAN ENNIS?

Mike Waters: I think I'd go with Tyler Roberson. I really like his offensive game. But he's behind Fair and Grant; not to mention Christmas with the two-bigs starting lineup. Still, there's a lot to like about him.

Me: Jake is up next.

Jake: MIKE, WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON GBINJE'S ABILITY TO HANDLE PG MINUTES IN CONFERENCE PLAY - I AM CONCERNED WITH WHAT I SEE THERE.
Cão de Agua has joined the chatroom
Jake: (BACK UP PG MINUTES)
Mike Waters: I think it's right to be somewhat concerned. His five turnovers against Holy Family weren't good. I think he can learn to handle the position to the extent that SU needs him there.
Me: Clinton is up next.,...
cliftonparksufan: THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN A GREAT TIME TO BE A CUSE FAN, EVEN WITH ALL OF THE CONTROVERSIES. WHAT DO YOU MOST ATTRIBUTE IT TO? CHANGE IN ASST COACHES? THE MELO CENTER? ACC MOVE? IT SURE BEATS PLAYING IN THE NIT OR LOSING TO VERMONT.
cto: ?
OsakaPaul: ?
cliftonparksufan: Clinton?

Mike Waters: I think it's the perfect storm. You take an NCAA title, mix in an NBA star like Carmelo, throw in Boeheim's Hall of Fame induction, add top-notch recruiters like Hop and Red and then build the Melo Center? You can't argue with the recent run of success.

SUFan44: I LIKE THE PARTS AND THE VERSATILITY ON THIS TEAM AND CAN SEE A HIGHER CEILING THAN LAST YEAR'S FINAL FOUR TEAM (SOUTHERLAND A LITTLE ONE DIMENSIONAL, CARTER WILLIAMS PERIMETER SHOOTING, TRICHE HOT/COLD vs. OVERALL CONSISTENT GAME FROM ENNIS, GRANT PLAYING MORE) PROVIDED ENNIS STAYS HEALTHY. AM I NUTS?
cliftonparksufan: ?
Jake: ?
Mike Waters: No, you're not nuts. This year's team could be better than last year's team. Remember how last year's team finished the regular season? If not for a stunning run through the NCAA tourney, last year's team would be remembered quite differently. So this year's team could be better, but as you know, March is fickle. And we all remember what teams do in March/April.
Me: Next up is mark79

mark79: OUT OF XMAS, DC2 AND KEITA, RANK THE WAY YOU SEE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS PLAYING OUT THIS SEASON (1=BIGGEST, 3= LEAST) AND WHY PLEASE
Bornorange: ?
Mike Waters: Man, I wish I knew. For now, I'll go with Coleman first because I think he's going to contribute more offensively. Then, I'll go with Keita because I think he's the most consistent and reliable. And, I can't believe I'm going with Christmas third because he has the skills to be the most complete of the three. His size, strength and athleticism are incredible. If he ever did put it all together, he'd be in the NBA.
Me: And now it is cto's turn...

OsakaPaul: IRONICALLY, MY QUESTION IS ALSO ABOUT PATTERSON -- WHO I LOVE TOO. IT SEEMS THERE IS ENOUGH BELIEF THAT B.J. JOHNSON MAY NOT EVEN BE AROUND FOR 4 FULL YEARS, SO HE'S UNLIKELY TO REDSHIRT. IF THE STAFF RECOGNIZES SOON THEY FEEL B.J. IS AHEAD OF PATTERSON AT 2G, IS THERE ANY WAY YOU THINK THEY REDSHIRT RON PATTERSON A LA TREVOR COONEY, RATHER THAN HAVE HIM BE THE 4TH SHOOTING GUARD?
GENESEO1983 has joined the chatroom
GENESEO1983 has left the chatroom
cto: ?
Mike Waters: I think the reason for not redshirting BJ is he's a very good shooter and he impressed in the August practices. Not worried about him leaving early at this point. I don't think the coaches have any plans to redshirt Patterson. Remember, he already spent one post-grad year at prep school.
Me: One suggestion: if you know you are in the queue, start typing your question in advance so when it is your turn, all you need to do it press Enter. Cliftonparkfan (not Clintonparkfan) now has the floor...
cliftonparksufan: This could be the deepest 1-11 that Cuse has ever suited up. We all know that JAB goes 8 max when it counts. Even MCW only played 11 minutes a game as a frosh. Who won't play come Feb/March. SORRY NOT IN CAPS
tonymz has left the chatroom
GENESEO1983 has joined the chatroom
Mike Waters: Well, we've got the starting five. Grant's the sixth man. Gbinije's going to play. And Keita, too. That's 8. So the next 3 are the other freshmen. I really like Roberson. Johnson's shooting might be needed at times. Then you've got Patterson. I think Johnson and Patterson get squeezed when ACC rolls around.

Me: Next up is Jake...
Jake: MIKE I THNK A LOT OF FANS ASSUME THE ACC IS A GREAT FIT FOR SYRACUSE BECAUSE OUR PROGRAM IS MORE FINESSE THAN MOST BIG EAST TEAMS. DO YOU SEE THAT BEING THE CASE AND DO YOU SEE (OR ARE THE COACHES DISCUSSING)THE PHYSICALITY OF A PROGRAM LIKE PITTSBURGH BEING AT A DISSADVANTAGE, NOT ONLY DUE TO THE ACC'S TRADITIONAL STYLE OF PLAY, BUT ALSO DUE TO THE EMPHASIS ON CURTAILING HAND-CHECKING THIS YEAR?
GENESEO1983 has left the chatroom
Cusefan0307 has joined the chatroom
GENESEO1983 has joined the chatroom
Mike Waters: I think differences in the style of play because conferences is over-blown. Referees work in different leagues. They don't change the way they call a game from Saturday in Chapel Hill to Monday in Pittsburgh. The new rules will be a much bigger factor. The hand-checky teams (L'ville, Pitt, Aaron Craft) will have problems in the short-term. I've heard some coaches talk about ... wait for it... playing more zone!

mark79: ?
Me: And now it is SUFan44's turn...
SUFan44: DO YOU HAVE AN OPINION ON GEORGE MCDONALD AND CHUCK BULLOUGH AS COO... OOPS, SORRY WRONG CHAT. WILL GRANT MAKE THE LEAP THIS YEAR THAT MOST OF US HOPE/EXPECT, AND BECOME ROBIN TO CJ'S BATMAN IN THE FRONTCOURT?

Mike Waters: Dasher really left?
Me: Yes, no dasher on the attendee list. If he comes back, we will get his question in...
cto: MIKE HOPKINS WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE USC JOB LAST YEAR (HIS DREAM JOB ASIDE FROM SU). GIVEN THAT JB IS APPARENTLY STAYING THORUHG THE 2016 OLYMPICS,, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK MIKE WILL STAY IF HE GETS A DECENT OFFER
Mike Waters: I think if Hopkins gets another offer from a school that gives him a chance to win, he takes it. The USC job was so perfect for him. But I don't think it's the only job that would ever interest him.
Me: And now batting, cliftonpark...
cliftonparksufan: WHEN YOU STAND AROUND THE WATER COOLER WITH YOUR COMPATRIOTS DO YOU EVER DISCUSS PAYPAL CAL. WOULD IT INTEREST YOU TO BE ABLE TO DISCOVER AND REPORT HOW KENTUCKY IS ABLE TO RECRUIT ALL OF THESE TOP PLAYERS. ALSO SINCE NO ONE HAS ASKED ABOUT COONEY YET, DO YOU THINK HE CAN AVERAGE 12 OR 13 PTS THIS SEASON.
CiceroSwamp has left the chatroom
Mike Waters: Do we discuss Cal? Til the wee hours of the morning. As far as Cooney goes, I think he can average 10-12 points per game. He's going to get points. If he hits 2 or 3 3-pointers in most games, he'll be racking up points.
Me: TexanMark is up next...
TexanMark: ANY WRITER BASED RUMORS ON ADDING ANOTHER ACC TEAM?
Cão de Agua: WILL JB's ALLEGIANCE TO HOMEGROWN, INFLUENCE THE PLAYING TIME OF COLEMAN
cto: CAO... get in line by posting a ?
Mike Waters: John Swofford has said the ACC isn't looking to add another member. Such as move would create imbalance with the football divisions. Right now, there's no need. And no rumors.

OsakaPaul: HEY MIKE, I'M AN OLD J-D GRAD. (WE MET AND DISCUSSED A BIT IN CHICAGO PRE-DEPAUL GAME A FEW YEARS BACK.) REALLY PULLING FOR DAJUAN. Mike Waters: I think Dajuan makes modest improvements this year. Not a big leap. He's dropped about 10 points. Converted some baby fat to muscle. He looks good. He's more explosive. He'll score more inside. But even in last Friday's exhibition, he still committed offensive fouls by lowering his shoulder and clearing out his opponent.
cto: CAO.,, can you read? If you want to ask a question... Simply post "?" and you will be called on in order
Me: Wait until your turn Cao. You are in the queue.
Me: Jake is up now...
Jake: MIKE, BIGGER REASON FOR COONEY'S SHOOTING IMPROVEMENT: HIS LEGS, HEAD OR SOMETHING ELSE?
Mike Waters: It'll start with his legs. He really worked on his conditioning in the summer. Now, if he feels better and gets more playing time and has some success, his confidence will grow. So, legs first. Head second.
Me: mark79 is next...
mark79: MIKE, WHO POSES THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO SU WINNING THE ACC THIS YEAR? AND WHO IN THE COACHING RANKS HAS A REALISTIC SHOT AT PASSING EITHER JB OR COACH K TO BECOME THE WINNINGEST COACH OF ALL TIME?

Me: cliftonparksufan, it is your turn now.

SUFan44: ALSO JOSEPH AT PG - I LOVE HIS GAME.

SUFan44 has left the chatroom
OsakaPaul: MIKE, I PERCEIVED A (POSITIVE) CULTURE SHIFT IN THE PROGRAM BEGINNING ROUGHLY AROUND THE WES JOHNSON SEASON, IN WHICH THE PLAYERS SEEM TO HAVE UNIVERSALLY "BOUGHT IN" TO THE SYSTEM — FULLY BEHIND THE ZONE, AND CONSISTENTLY QUITE RESPECTFUL OF COACH BOEHEIM'S IN GAME INSTRUCTION, ETC. DO YOU AGREE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED? AND IF SO, WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THE SHIFT TO? (RECRUITING CERTAIN TYPES OF KIDS?, ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF INFLUENCE?, COACH BOEHEIM FINALLY BEING REVERED AS EITHER A GREAT COACH OR COOL GY, BY THE KIDS…??)
SP_Gilbs has left the chatroom
Mike Waters: A lot of it had to do with the kids that were brought into the program. No more Dayshawn Wrights, Louie McCroskeys, etc. More guys like Andy Rautins and Arinze Onuaku. Followed by Brandon Triche and James Southerland.
Me: bbgre, it is your turn.
bbgre: At this point does the staff expect both xmas and dc to be here four years and does that influence recruiting specific players over others?
Bornorange has left the chatroom
No Hoyas: ?
Mike Waters: I'm being totally honest here, in this day and age, the coaches don't expect anything. They're constantly planning for the future. At this point, it would be a huge mistake for either player to think that they're leaving early, so you think they're going to be around, but you still go and recruit a Chinonso Obokoh, right?
cto: ?

Me: rstone, you are next
rstone7727: Hi Mike, I guess you have seen the team play/practice many times this year. I feel last years team was a 9 on a scale of 1-10.. Where do think this years team will be on that scale..?
Mike Waters: Are you guys paying me hourly or by the question?
Mike Waters: I might
rstone7727: $1 per question..
cto: MIke.. we love you. Just tell us when you want to cut if off
Mike Waters: Sorry. I might've had last year's team at an 8 and this year's team at a 9. But that was preseason. We all know last year's team wound up in the Final Four. This year's team has the talent to be a Final Four team, but you never know.
netman99: 1$ for correct answers only
cto: and tom will stop acceptng questions
Me: The next question is from jake...
Mike Waters: So I've made $20 by rstone's scale and nothing by netman's.
Jake: ANY SCHUTTLEBUTT ON THE GTOWN SERIES RESUMING?
mark79 has left the chatroom
Mike Waters: Nada. I think G'town officials were hesitant and might still be hesitant. But eventually the pressure from fans and media will be too great. They've got to agree to a series.
Mike Waters: Let's go til 9:15, Tom. OK?
Me: Sounds good Mike. That will be a new record.
MikeSU02 has joined the chatroom
Me: Next question will be asked by cuseguy
Mike Waters: Woot-woot!
cuseguy: NOT SURE IF THIS WAS ASKED EARLIER, BUT WHY DO YOU THINK THE COACHES DECIDED NOT TO RECRUIT A SUITABLE BACKUP AT POINT FOR ENNIS THIS YEAR? SEEMS LIKE IT COULD COME BACK TO BITE THEM.
dasher has joined the chatroom
Mike Waters: Well, I think they did pursue a few guards. Rysheed Jordan comes to mind. They had him up on a visit. But it's hard to convince a kid who is pretty highly rated to come and play behind another recruit in the same class. I think they hoped Patterson would be more of a combo, but he's not.
Me: cto has the next question and then dasher is up
Mike Waters: And look what the cat dragged in. Dasher.

dasher: about Pitt, who do you think will be our best shooter not named Trevor Cooney?

I have asked this question before, but how is it that SU was sanctioned for, among other things, boosters allowing players to do their laundry in their homes, yet there are persistent rumors that Kentucky "buys" its players and there are no investigations? Has KY been investigated? I am not caught up on the history of this.

I am now replying to my own message. I found an interesting article in The New Yorker and here is the first paragraph:

In early September, John Calipari posted a video in which he led a tour of the “Wildcat Coal Lodge,” a brand new dormitory at the University of Kentucky built specifically for the use of Calipari’s men’s basketball team. The dorm was unlike any I could remember from college: flat-screen TVs in almost every corner, a lounge with a pool table, free Gatorade twenty-four hours a day. A woman named Aunt Betsy guarded the entrance to the “new gold standard in housing,” and during the tour Calipari asked the dorm’s head chef if he could make a grilled cheese, a hamburger, a cheesesteak, and wings. The answer to each request was yes, which might not make the team’s nutritionist happy, but would presumably excite the video’s primary audience: seventeen-year-old basketball phenoms trying to decide where to go to college. Calipari showed off one player’s room, dotted with multiple couches and another large flat-screen—there are no roommates in the Wildcat Coal Lodge—then walked over to the sink, which was slightly too tall, and proclaimed, “Everything in here is for seven-footers.”

I guess all of that is legal.

Of course it's legal. The "University" built it with "charitable donations". As long as 'The Tooth Fairy' doesn't leave any rolls of twenties under the pillows, all is good.

I wonder what would happen if Syracuse decided to build something like that? I'd expect the NCAA would be crawling around the place like roaches.

The book "Raw Recruits" started it.

What's funny is that I googled "Cao de Aqua" during the chat to see what would come up. It means Portuguese Water Dog. Cao must be a big fan of them and I must say they are pretty cute.

As per Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Water_Dog
In Portugal, the breed is called Cão de Água (IPA: [ˈkɐ̃w dɨ ˈaɡwɐ]; literally "dog of water"). In its native land, the dog is also known as the Algarvian Water Dog (Cão de Água Algarvio), or Portuguese Fishing Dog (Cão Pescador Português). Cão de Água de Pêlo Ondulado is the name given to the wavy-haired variety, and Cão de Água de Pêlo Encaracolado is the name for the curly-coated variety.[2]

As I recall they have to have a certain number of regular students in this building to be allowable by NCAA rules.
