Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

I’m not worried about precedent or hypotheticals. Slippery slope arguments don’t sway me.

To be a top 25 team we need to retain the majority of our best players. Pena is absolutely one of them. If we have the means to match a better offer we should do it.

If someone else wants to get a better offer in the hopes of SU matching it then more power to them. But if they’re not one of our top 5 then they should be prepared to leave.

Again, businesses deal with this all the time. No business has a “never match” policy. That would be foolish.
We are the Cleveland Guardians not the New York Yankees.Just have to get used to it.

It’s not a “he doesn’t like Rickie” take to say it would be incredibly difficult to duplicate his McCord as QB numbers with a brand new QB. It’s common sense that this would be a consideration.
In the same token, it will be incredibly difficult for most QBs to duplicate McCord’s numbers. Also Pena will be joining a team that presumably has a more experienced receiving corps, so there is not a guarantee he will be targeted as much as he would at SU.

yep folks are in la la land and the post about Fran being smacked by reality is spot on. Next year will be earth shaking for Fran to confront directly the realities that come directly into his face challenging his mindset and philosophies.

Untested new likely raw qb, complete overhaul at many positions including wr that all think we're deep. THAT SCHEDULE, The NIL reality that brings our best going away with regularity now. All that spell trouble for competitiveness this year. .500 would be an accomplishment.

Now when it all goes down, a direct challenge to all he believes in what does he do? Bolt for greener pa$ture$ like the rest of them do including Pena here or hang here to try and keep the program at least competitive, while likely not ever being in line for a shot at a NC. Gonna be interesting to see how things shake out but think you and I know the final ending.
Sobering

Though saddened that we won't see him play for SU, I'm not sure how to feel about this. There are a lot of factors that went into his decision, most of which I know little about. This may best his best opportunity to make significant money, ever. It's tough to criticize a young man when one perspective he has to be focused on is that he may never have another chance to profit from the one year of his life where he truly thrived. The future carries no guarantees. He almost didn't have that opportunity due to previous injuries. I'm mostly saddened that SU isn't in a competitive position with our peers. If it was a close decision, i have to think he'd stay. I do wish him well and appreciate his part on one of our best teams since Pasqualoni. I do think that contracts could help the chaos. Anyhow, thank you, Trebor. Best wishes

this is just an awful development but this is college football in today’s NIL and transfer portal era. We saw it with the Tennessee quarterback and unfortunately it’s a chain reaction. As bad as we feel about losing Trebor, how would you feel to be a big 12 team that loses its starting quarterback after spring ball to Trnnessee

Our whole starting receiver corps is now gone and our best WR and TEAM CAPTAIN just jumped.

Downplay it all you want but this is a concerning development and should be.
He didn’t say it was not concerning, he just questioned the post saying we can’t beat Miami this year. No reason to assume given losses at this time of the year.

It’s the nature of college sports. Now we have money for other positions of need. We have a lot of good wrs. Pena is a loss but it is not like he was our only wideout.

I get that. But it’s also dangerous to acquiesce. At some point people aren’t going to want to give money to keep players who are gonna leave anyway.

If he leaves I expect Fran will have to come out with some type of a statement. This is not a good look, being named captain then leaving after the spring game isn’t dart

Man, Pena was all DART. He has been detailed, Accountable, Relentless and Tough His entire time at SU.

He has also shown he was committed to the program, that he cared about the program and that he could be trusted. Perhaps he came to a crossroad where he began to question if the program was committed to him, cared about him (as much as another program cared) or if he could trust the program to step up when another program has indicated they would step up.

Commitment, Care and Trust works both ways.

Nothing tells someone you care like telling them “if you want to go, go already” when someone starts to question their choices and seeks guidance. I’m not saying this happened with Pena, but apparently this has happened more than once.

Bottom line to me, above the rest of the noise -

He leaves as a team captain to join an in conference opponent on next year’s schedule.

Take that as you will. But I think that sentence tells a thousand words without justifying, or dragging the kid.

So not ideal but yeah gotta keep moving forward. Our overall talent level is still higher and our WR room while short on experience could be our best group of talent on the team.
On the plus side Wohlbaugh has not officially entered the portal yet (knock on wood). Maybe still hope there.
Lastly this goes both ways and we may be getting some strong players coming in from the portal. Let's hold off on panic until we see what the final puts and takes are.

I mean, I literally run a business where we successfully compete against much bigger competitors and operate that way. *Assuming* your pay is fair, and your opponents have considerably more money than you, you'll just waste opportunity cost. You beat them with moneyball not with wads of cash.

Trebor was overlooked for a while and found a home here, he isn't any longer. That sucks but it is what it is, we can now put that budget toward somebody else who isn't getting the snaps they deserve.

That said, if he was underpaid I agree we should've matched. I just don't think he was.

It’s a total Fustercluck and I’d be ok if fans of every school boycotted college football until they can figure this mess out.

I can see Emmanuel Ross trying to fill that role as well. Put your best 3 or 4 out there. JRS Gill Ross
Oh for sure. Put your best guys out there. I think Ross is going to be a stud. I just like having a guy out there like Erv Phillips, Estime, Peña, etc…that has some wiggle, fast, quick and can make some guys miss. But guys like JRS and Ross are big physical guys which are nice to obviously lol. As long as we have someone to stretch the field which Gill is more than capable of doing

Next man up. He got more NIL after last year. He could have left then. Someone else came around with a much bigger bag now. Is what it is. If guys want to chase the biggest bag, they will always leave.

It’s a loss but we have a lot of depth at WR.
I'm thinking / hoping xfr Tyshawn Russell and Darius Johnson can fill the role just fine.

Absolutely. There needs to be a balance between “don’t jerk us around” and “we really want you here.”
