Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

If the school is Miami why can’t Fran block it since we play them next year? Plus , they blocked Gus Edwards so all is fair . If i’m Fran i’m not letting Miami tamper and the. have to play against him next year. Go somewhere else.
Is that even a thing anymore? Totally different era

If a guy is voluntarily leaving this time of year it’s either for money or playing time / position issue 99 times out of 100.

Barnes I agree was not a money thing.

Pena is a money thing. The amount of tampering that goes on in spring ball is massive. But it goes both ways so I’m not begrudging that. You have to be constantly keeping tabs on your guys. But you can’t keep everyone happy on a team of 100+.
I think Fran got played on this one though. I know he was high on Trebor at spring game. If we are expected to lose a few more players in portal then it could be a problem for us this year.

This particular player feels like the last straw for me. No more rooting for players. It's all about the laundry and the name on the front moving forward. Even pro sports you usually get 2-3+ years to develop a connection. We did with Pena, but then he did something which just feels so out of character based on everything I know of him.

This whole system is head-spinningly neurotic and I refuse to get invested in people any more.
ha me too as I just posted the same in the boycott thread before seeing this here. It's ova, been a nice run as a passionate loyal fan. Final straw.

I'm really shocked him and his mom seemed all in on SU
Like many have said nobody is bigger then the S
I hope he has a great season unless he ends up in Miami...

Guessing the disparity in bags was big and if $$$ were close, he would have satyed.

Such is life.

Wildhack saying we're not where we want to be on NIL this week now has some context.

We’ve now lost all of our top receivers from last year. People keep saying we’re deep at wide receiver. None of them have proved anything. The first two throws to Russell on Saturday were 50/50 balls and he didn’t come down with either of them. Our tight ends have not proved they can catch the ball on a consistent basis. To be honest, no one stood out on Saturday. Hornsby caught a couple, but no one else stood out. Collins is not McCord either. This team might really struggle to score points. They didn’t go up and down the field on Saturday either.
Justus Ross-Simmons did have 45 catches for 724 yards his sophomore year at Colorado St, but otherwise yeah, a little thin on experience.

Screw him. SU stuck with him through injuries and unproductive seasons and now he bails.
So much for being excited to be a captain. If he comes back I love him and this system is fine.
If you were him you’d do the same thing if the price was right. If he’s getting a big paycheck he would be a fool to not leave. He’s no lock to play in the NFL so he should take the money and run

Interesting story on Brent axes podcast just now. Reporters were waiting around last night for an hour while some of the leadership type players met with Fran at midfield. Dion Wilson, Macdonald, Duce, Petry, and Peña. Apparently was a heated convo that Trebor walked away from not looking too happy.

So we got some drama...

Will be interesting to see how Fran handles.

We’ll be a completely different team this year playing on the road.
yep folks are in la la land and the post about Fran being smacked by reality is spot on. Next year will be earth shaking for Fran to confront directly the realities that come directly into his face challenging his mindset and philosophies.

Untested new likely raw qb, complete overhaul at many positions including wr that all think we're deep. THAT SCHEDULE, The NIL reality that brings our best going away with regularity now. All that spell trouble for competitiveness this year. .500 would be an accomplishment.

Now when it all goes down, a direct challenge to all he believes in what does he do? Bolt for greener pa$ture$ like the rest of them do including Pena here or hang here to try and keep the program at least competitive, while likely not ever being in line for a shot at a NC. Gonna be interesting to see how things shake out but think you and I know the final ending.

Thing is, if you choose to match, that's not a tactic to retain a single player. That's a strategy for all the players who try it. And once it's known you'll do it, you invite more to try.

We've got money, but not like the SEC schools. Ultimately it's just not a strategy we can afford.
I’m not worried about precedent or hypotheticals. Slippery slope arguments don’t sway me.

To be a top 25 team we need to retain the majority of our best players. Pena is absolutely one of them. If we have the means to match a better offer we should do it.

If someone else wants to get a better offer in the hopes of SU matching it then more power to them. But if they’re not one of our top 5 then they should be prepared to leave.

Again, businesses deal with this all the time. No business has a “never match” policy. That would be foolish.

Why because one guy is leaving
one guy? One guy leaving this particular way maybe but when added in to others no longer here for various other reasons, it makes that statement legit. Some of the other games too both on the road and at home against legit competition make no game a gimme. And as SUDAD inferred more to come. As he said buckle up.

Didn’t Clarence Lewis exhaust his eligibility or are you thinking of someone else? J’Onre Reed?

You are 100% corrects. Thanks. Jayden Bellamy is the other CB who transferred.

And, I did forget about J’Onre Reed.

So, five starters.

CB, Barnes
CB, Bellamy
C, Reed
OL, Wholabaugh
Wr, Pena

Yeah, this is a bummer. And also, not.

I'd say WR is the deepest spot on the entire roster, and we will fill that spot with another talented dude.

I kinda understand his thinking - with Kyle gone, his #'s may take a dip this season.
And, I really don't think he's an NFL talent, so this is likely his last chance to really ca$h in on some big NIL.

Gotta imagine somebody reached out to him with a "Godfather offer" that he just couldn't refuse.
Thanks for the memories, Trebor!!

Next man up.
If he can cash in now more power to him. I'm not sold that he is not an NFL player though. Pretty darn talented slot guy imo and punt returner. He has had his share of injuries, so I don't blame him for wanting to cash in.
