Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

all this agent talk isn’t there job to get their player more money. If the numbers being tossed around are true it sounds like he took a cut to play for Penn St. Sounds like he’s not too good at his job or Treb was really concerned with Collins which really is irrelevant because he most likely isn’t playing professionally and even if he did have a down year NFL scouts and front office don’t care about stats as much as they do about physical traits and testing . His tape from this past season is more than enough if he had what is required to play slot in the NFL.Sounds like his agent did him wrong.
The whole entire situation stinks. Period.

Once Fran publicly stated that he told Pena to go I believe that destroyed his leverage. PSU needs to pay a premium to get you to leave your existing program but once the whole nation knows your coach isn’t giving you a raise then PSU no longer needs to pay that premium.
I think Fran is often more intentional in what he says to the media than people realize.

Calabro Sports Counsel has been representing Pena since June of 2024 (if not earlier), well before he was named captain. Check out the IG page for Calabro Sports Counsel. They represent multiple current and former Syracuse players. The kid is hustling and trying to get something going for himself. Kudos to him!

You want me to hold Calabro to a higher standard because Pena was a captain who decided to leave? I don't see anything wrong with the way Pena left, captain* or not. Well, I choose to cut Calabro some slack because he is an alum. I gave the background information for people reading these posts who may not know the details.

You wanna be real? Let's be real. Pena left in part because he was unsure of Rickie Collins' ability to run the offense in a way that is going to get Pena the numbers he thinks he will need to get the attention of NFL scouts. It was much more about potential future earning than current earning. (IMO, the talk about $2mm was a smokescreen to keep the heat off Collins. That could not have been a serious number for Pena.) Of course, Fran said he (Pena) was worrying about things he shouldn't be worrying about. Things the coaches worry about. Hmmm, Fran didn't say that to Orande when Orande told Fran he was leaving if Fran didn't get a QB. And Fran got McCord when he became available. And what did Fran do this year? He got Angeli when he became available. Of course, Fran isn't a fortune teller and had no way of knowing Angeli would become available (cough, cough) when he met with Pena. But let's keep it real. QB's worry about the offensive line, and receivers worry about the QB. Facts. Is it a coincidence Fran is making a push lately to pull offensive linemen from the portal? Maybe, and just maybe, Fran came to realize Collins isn't the answer at QB, and maybe Fran told Angeli he would do what he can to improve the o-line. Pure speculation on my part.

*Regarding Pena being named captain. Pena is a leader, but he's a quiet leader who grinds and leads by example. He's not wired like Chestnut, Wax or Barron. IMO, Fran made Pena captain in an effort to sway the young man cause Fran knew poachers were going to be trying to pull Pena away from Syracuse.

Either way, IMO, the way you referred to AJ Calabro was classless and not necessary because he is an alum.

Go Orange!
I doubt Fran got more offensive lineman because of Angeli. He needs better players no matter who the QB. If he only wanted better offensive lineman because of the quarterback, that’s coaching malpractice.

AJ was representing Trebor when he agreed to his NIL in December and he's currently pursuing a law degree at Rutgers. I think I would trust Fran to know what is needed more than a Rutgers law student and a former player who is not DART and reneged on an agreement.

Yup. I have no sympathy for guys who signed a contract and don’t honor it. I’m very pro player but I hope schools start taking legal action against these guys if they violate deals and/or force them to pay buy out clauses to terminate a deal early. That’s what happens in the real world. They can negotiate for another school to pay the buyout.

Not to mention there’s nothing stopping schools from tampering right now and promising a big deal that may not materialize, just to destabilize and hurt a conference competitor. I like that the SEC prohibits this intraconference during the spring but the result is sec schools are more aggressive in poaching from other conferences. You need consistent rules across the board. Either every conference has that rule or none do. Wild West stuff needs to be cleaned up. Complete lack of leadership in this sport.

When Fran said ok go... is that not a release from the previous agreement? So much we don't know other than the stuff that Fran disclosed to the media. I have to think Fran and his staff talks that they have the players best interests in mind. If a vital part of the team receives a lucrative offer shouldn't coach Fran either match if he can or bless him to help himself and his family or be pissed off that he wasn't a loyal Cuse player after 5 years of service. Just my take from gathering what I have seen from public info. Thinking any University goals should be to help any student to have success from their Cuse education first and for most.

A vital part of the team didn’t receive a lucrative offer in this case. Refer to Maraad Watson if you want to see how Fran reacts when a key player receives a real offer.

There’s a difference between making a decision to match a legitimate lucrative offer and a demand being made.

If he was that worried about QB play and being targeted then PSU is an odd choice for less money (TE heavy offense). I stand by what I said and if AJ was representing him before all this went down then that’s worse because as an agent there’s no way he wasn’t knowledgeable and complicit. The whole entire way that situation went down was far more classless than any stupid comment I can make on a message board.

You can frame it whatever way you want but at the end of the day it was a strong-arm move on the program. The fact that it was done by a team captain already under contract and an alum representing him makes it worse. Program stood by him while he was injured, gave him a gift last year with McCord feeding him passes, and when it comes his time to return the favor as a vet senior leader for a young QB, he tries to get more money to stay than he could get anywhere else.

I have never said a negative thing about any player portalling out, but I refuse to bite my tongue on this one.
Amen bro preach

My comment is in regards to his decision to represent a team captain that left the program in the way Pena did. Should we all be high fiving him for that? Get real. It’s not a commentary on anything he’s done prior to that or his personal life. If you can’t figure that out then that says more about you than me.

I’m sorry he lost his father but that has nothing to do with this situation. A lot of people have lost people. That doesn’t make him immune from criticism.
Not immune from criticism, no, fully agreed.

Immune from being referred to a dildo, yes.

Numerous SEC schools violated NCAA rules, do these same schools abide by SEC rules?

No, there’s still an open market with competing bids for him. That assumes it was a two pony race when it probably wasn’t.

So the rumor is Pena was getting 800k at Syracuse but only 500k at PSU?
Well honestly if how it happened actually happened then he deserves it. Pena wa s a fav playerof mine who can catch over and around anyone but to leave worried about not getting ball as much and then go to a run heavy annd te pass team makes 0 sense and then lose 300,000 to do that is stupid plain and simple. He would have made 1000 yds here easy which would have put him on the top of team in my opinion and now he may get 400 to 500 yds. He did us wrong and i have 0 give a s---s about him anymore. Great job bye coach Brown on getting Cook, but i also think we have guys who can do some things. Really like the rochester kid Thomas. Has exceptionally quick ft and can do some dsmage after the catch.

If I had a "head hunter" looking for a job for me and I found my current one is giving me a big raise and they say "no ask for more" then I get thrown in the unknown only to get less, would fire them on the spot and cry lol

Don’t get sucked in by the “rumors”.

Do not think this is the case. It certainly is possible but I have not heard from any one reliable or close to Trebor that he took less money.

From what I have heard, Pena is happy with how his situation played out.

Then we should be happy for him. Good kid, wish him luck excelling in PSU’s pass happy offense
Not for nothing but Penn St has 4 slot receivers currently on NFL rosters starting with Chris Godwin 10 years ago. Penn St uses TE’s but also slot receivers.

Chris Godwin
Allen Robinson
KJ Hamler
