Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

Not for nothing but Penn St has 4 slot receivers currently on NFL rosters starting with Chris Godwin 10 years ago. Penn St uses TE’s but also slot receivers.

Chris Godwin
Allen Robinson
KJ Hamler
Deandre Parker

They didn’t use those guys out of the slot, but I get what you are laying down.

I don’t see Pena making a massive impact there. I could be wrong, but to me he is an above average collegiate slot WR that benefited from our system and QB play.

Great PR though.

Agreed. Pena might be KJ Hamler level. And he is hanging on in the practice squad world these days.

KJ Hamler ran a sub 4.4 40 and was a second round pick in the NFL (where he can’t stay healthy).

I’m not sure Pena is on a draft radar at this point.
The fact that he was a second round pick is stunning. I do think Pena is very similar to him from a productivity standpoint.

Shocker. Bnoro has a contrary opinion. Stop the presses. Pena was mid before McCord. Will be Mid next year. Id be shocked if he catches 25 balls.
We're losing 1000 yards and 10 TDs of production. There may be guys on the roster that replace that but that's not a guarantee.

Ya know, our Wheaties were tasting remarkably urine-free this am,
but then you came to the rescue!! :p

I’m sure there’s a punch bowl somewhere that’s missing a turd.

Not quite sure why people are ragging on bnoro.

What he says, especially "We're losing 1000 yards and 10 TDs of production. There may be guys on the roster that replace that but that's not a guarantee." is very true.

Posters throwing shade at Pena and implying he will be easy to replace are not rooted in reality. Will someone (or someones) step up and replace his productivity? Maybe/maybe not/probably? Literally no one knows. Taking an opposing viewpoint doesn't need to be met with snark.

There are a ton of unknowns right now. With his injury history, no one even knows if Pena will be healthy for a full season in 2025. Whether he stayed here or otherwise. And while it’s accurate we have a significant amount of production to replace with him, it’s also accurate that as a WR he wasn’t really much of anything until last season with McCord.

I think the bigger point is that we need to replace the production. Personally I don’t think Trebor was repeating last season even if he was here. Having someone more dynamic in the slot might be the only path we had towards repeating that production. Trebor is more of a scheme slot. We’re going to need someone that makes their QB better, not the other way around. McCord was practically Brady in that respect (expect for the Pitt game lol).

Good to know you’ll be in my corner when I post a contrarian position on the basketball board.

It's all just people coping about him leaving when no one knows anything.

It's easy to pile on someone being rational when it's not what you want to hear.

I think with Pena he is a proven a very good contributor. Cook is an upgrade in terms of the ceiling is overall higher, but right now he is not even remotely close to Pena from a known proven contributor standpoint. We lost stability with Pena at that position and gained someone that can be better because he simply is faster, but has a lot work to even catch up to Pena.

He left.
We Upgraded.
Story closed.
I totally agree! Why are we still talking about him?!

I don't think its accurate to portray the optimistic scenario as 'coping'. I think the audience that thinks we can be as good (maybe even better) than what Pena gave us last year look at the following facts:

1. Before last year Pena could not stay healthy in 4 years of college football
  • Then this past year he did stay healthy all year, for the FIRST TIME EVER while giving credit to Fran and staff for giving him the focus and the plan to achieve a higher likelyhood of health

2. Before last year Pena did not produce any appreciable results IN FOUR YEARS when he was healthy
  • Then this past year he produced at all ACC levels putting him up there with some of the best recieving years in Cuse history

3. Before last year Jackson Meeks could not see the field over 3 years with UGA, let alone produce
  • Then this past year with Fran, Meeks put up the 2nd most yards in the entire ACC

4. Before last year Kyle McCord had a solid, not great season with OSU, one that wasnt even good enough to secure the starting position when returning starters at QB are GOLD in College football
  • Then this past year with Fran, Kyle broke the ALL TIME ACC RECORD! for passing yards and a few other categories

You seeing the pattern everyone else sees yet and why some of us trust Fran a bit more than it appears you do?

yeah that production came with McCord against a weaker schedule. He probably wasn't replicating that production here this year, so that production was lost regardless.

Isn’t that what he discussed with Brown as a big concern.

There’s more than one article is that adding Pena is an important piece to getting PSU in a position as one of the favorites next year.

A once 5 star cast off is a definitive upgrade over an all-ACC player?

What’s the evidence for that, a HS highlight reel? A 40 time?

Please

Was Trebor anything close to that prior to McCord?

I'm sorry, how am I not "trusting in Fran"? I'm all in on Fran and have said over and over how impressed I've been so far.

What I find odd is a lot of people trying to write off losing Pena as not a big loss and acting like we upgraded. Fran himself was not happy about Pena leaving.

Here are the facts:
1. Pena had over 1,000 rushing/receiving yards and 10 TDs last season, and was one of our most consistent players
2. Pena's "portal replacement", Johntay Cook had 8 catches for 137 yards (less than Ross/Ross-Simmons), transferred, and was immediately dismissed from Washington.
3. Ross & Ross-Simmons flashed as solid players in limited snaps
4. Our WR recruiting the last two years has been impressive on paper

I just don't think anyone can say we "upgraded" from Pena RIGHT NOW. If Johntay Cook was a 3 star transfer going to Texas people would be freaking out that we got weaker at the WR position.

Maybe once the season starts I'll be worrying for nothing.

Prior to last season Peña’s best season was 22 catches for 203 yards that’s why. Fran got everyone hyped around what Pena could do prior to the year and with McCord and the right system they delivered. The fact is all things being equal Cook has a much higher ceiling, better high school pedigree with offer sheet to match and had two Texas receivers who are now pros talking about how good Cook can be in the right situation.

On Cooks commitment to Syracuse thread on X there were SMU fans literally saying they had hoped he wouldn’t end up on an ACC opponents roster because of how good he is. From a pure talent perspective he is an upgrade and if he takes advantage of this situation he will outperform Pena. Is that guaranteed? Of course not, in this case it’s up to Cook but for folks acting like Pena is a big loss and he can’t be replaced, it’s horsecrap.
