For some reason in today’s landscape, the only part of this that I can’t get past is him taking the “C” and then doing this. I know I know, he’s getting what he can while he can and I can’t blame him for that, but this is not the action of a captain and that’s what hurts the team here. If my Captain can do this then all bets are off. The C needs to mean more. Sorry if this sounds trite but captains lead they don’t jump ship for personal gain. But again, can’t fault a 23 year old for trying to get as much while he can in a situation w limited shelf life before he becomes one of us jobbers….but expected more from a captain

With Miami, there was instant smoke with Carson Beck and that was settled in like two days tops.

We have a situation here where again, allegedly Miami, yet nothing has popped up otherwise indicating a visit to them or confirmed transfer to them

Not saying he won't end up there, but wherever he ends up he better have it where he gets 80% upfront and the backend is the 20% or he may not get close to the supposed carrot that was dangled in front of him

If he needs Kyle McCord to hit his numbers, he's not getting it. There was one Kyle last year. There might not be one this year.

Most likely there was a back and forth and eventual agreement on NIL for this year to go along with him being made captain. If he thought that he can force our hand to up his NIL dollars, and we’d have no choice or look bad losing the captain, then Fran had no choice but to let him walk. Can’t cave to extortion.

Peña at best is a late round draft choice and being a captain along with being a high character person has helped guys stick to NFL teams. Something he should have considered.

It really is pretty awful what some of these guys say. A lot of former players leave school and get jobs (sometimes completely made up positions) they are not qualified for, simply because they played college football. They can make a much better living than most because they suited up for SU. And they can do all of this with zero college debt to pay back. A reality check is needed for any players who think this way.

I retracted my comment from a couple days ago, now that we know the details. No way I'd bump his pay by 150%.

This is why Fran's transparency is the best. Everyone is smarter for it. Rumors don't fly and innuendo doesn't rule the day. I wish everyone in college sports operated that way.

Bad look by Rhino with what he said and trying to back pedal quickly. Have a ton of respect for him and all he did for the S but come one man, it's all about the money.

I don't think Fran will ever regret what he said in this interview. The man speaks the truth, sometimes the truth hurts and ALOT of this men need to hear it.

Pena left after making a new deal and taking a leadership role. Fran has every right to say he is not a leader or great teammate...it's the truth.

I had to google when Elmore left and why. I'm not sure he would've sniffed the field in the Fran Brown world.

Yep, and there's many of us who competed in D3 sports and didn't make a dime. But did it for the love of sports. We also woke up at 6 am and beat our bodies. There's a bit of entitlement in the belief that current football or basketball players are the only ones that work hard or have obligations.

I generally know the numbers but some surprise you as bigger up close (Savion!) and some as smaller. I did track in college and unfortunately didn’t really try for football due to my size. That never really sat right with me, but I remember seeing Trebor go by and thinking “damn, I could’ve played slot?!”

Lol wayyyyy less. In track I got my scholly and that was it. Actually won some mountain bike races in the offseason and had to turn down the (small) pots due to “amateurism”.

I would’ve been thrilled with even a $1 NIL deal.

All that said, Treb can legit run a route.

I was initially very upset with Pena deciding to leave. I'm still frustrated but not exactly upset with him at the moment. Upset with the "system" yes. And I don't quite understand his whole accepting the Captain thing means he should not leave, no matter the opportunity? Come on... Its a bad system at the moment but not his fault. Not sure if i or everybody would make the same decision but it is certainly understandable. Its a job offer. He'll likely end up in a good situation with a very large payout. Who knows what happens with his Football career and payout after college. Sounds like this is a guaranteed much larger payout at the moment. Sure he loves football but he is in also in college to better his life just like everyone else who goes to college. He initially made a better NIL deal to reflect the great season he had and he was fine with it at that time. But if suddenly Pena is truly going to get an offer that is double or more of what he would get at SU, how can you blame him for going? Sure the timing would have been better at the end of last year but i'm asssuming the situation has changed since then. Your talking serious money. I'm sure its not an easy decision because he loves SU but i get it.

And regarding the timing, its after spring ball yes, but we are still in a very good spot with WR talent so he isn't leaving us in a terrible spot. Even though not much of it is all that proven. Neither was our WR unit going into 2024 as OG was the only one with proven talent and maybe I guess JRS, but he was injured.
