Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

This all gets me thinking. What if….and I am making up a totally fictional example here because I’m sure we can all agree that something like this would NEVER happen at SU.

I wonder how Fran would react if a player…I dunno, let’s say a QB…came to him. And let’s say the player had, get this, a PowerPoint presentation outlining the problems in the program that the player felt were present. And then furthermore, the player outlined in the PowerPoint the changes he wanted Fran to make including which specific teammates he wanted tossed overboard. Maybe even include a few names of guys he knew that he wanted Fran to bring in.

I mean, this is DART as all get-out. To paraphrase Jeff Daniels, “ The DART abides.”

Certainly, Fran would love every aspect of this, right?……..
Seems like we are certainly on that path.

Pena caught some clutch passes for sure

He also ran a ton of routes that didn't require breaking down his man.

only the coaches know how many site adjustment routes he ran. And thats a hard thing to replace.

Many of his best plays were schemed open. that should be replaceable.

We don't need the slot guy to catch 85, we need 50-60.

Can we replace Allens 60 from the RB spot is the big question

Coach already sounds like he wants a better running game, which in itself may mean less passing.

is that ”e” or “o”. This is going to be confusing for me until season starts

Lol right? Fortunately they're in alphabetical order.

Davien = Soph
Davion = Frosh

I meant Davien but I suspect either could do it. Would be pretty neat to run a trick return or something with both of them.

He's absolutely going to land somewhere for the same or similar money, but it will be a blue blood with a "better QB". His production and targets will go down as a result and will mainly be used for specials.

I see it all now.

@ Ped St today...

Question - I haven't listened to Coach Fran's interview on Orange Nation yet, did he say or imply that Pena came to him that he had a $2 million offer (or bigger than what he had a SU) in hand and Fran said - go take it young man; or did Pena just ask Fran for more to renegotiate and complained about the QB and the game plan and Fran said - get out of here, leave, you're not DART? Thanks for any insight on this.

- Fran basically said he had suspicions before spring ball that Pena was ansty/getting offers/tampered with
- Said Pena really hadn't embraced his team captain role
- Said Pena came to him with the offer and Fran told him to go take it if that is what he wanted (SU wasn't matching it)
- Said he'd be here for him to help him when his college career was over if he needed help

So? Did he break the contract? Did Pena talk to Fran? They both had opportunities their former school couldn’t/wouldn’t match.
You are beyond reaching here.

So after Pena agreed to a NIL deal and was named team captain which he personally embraced he then asked Fran if he could seek out better NIL opportunities elsewhere? That’s your fantasy scenario?

Great. Thanks very much!

He might be a bad example. The first two throws to him last Saturday were 50/50 balls and he didn’t catch either one. Pena didn’t drop those passes.

Small sample size

It is well known that assistant coaches leave jobs for better or different ones. There is an out in the contract for this.

Does anyone have that quote of HCFB making a joke about Collins potentially leaving like Pena did? Hopefully someone knows what I’m talking about and I don’t sound stupid.

Ped State’s offense is about RB’s and TE’s. Pena will be a third wheel. Head scratcher.
I didn’t realize that they’ve had some good slot WR’s. That’s what i was thinking too, mostly RB/TE, but in the last 10 years they’ve produced Chris Goodwin, KJ Hamler, Parker Washington, and Jahan Dotson. All very productive college years and all play in NFL. I was surprised looking into it.

I dont think anyone thinks Pena is not good..

I think its that Pena isnt worth 2 million and we should not build a whole team around him.

Valuable, yes.

Irreplaceable? no.
Agreed ...

Ironically this is now like a business as news articles said... I appreciate Pena and all he has done, I just wish it wasn't just about money or a quarterback issue, as the first is a thing I hate $$, the second has been an issue depending on the year. We have had a great team of individuals these last few years, and to see it break up from grads, and edging out now to decide is obviously a heartbreak. I think in the end, we will be fine. I'm sure basketball is going through this as well...

It’s unfortunate to see Peña go but it does seem like he was repeatedly asking the staff for more money every time a new NIL offer came through. I get it but it also gets to a point where it’s too high or the relationship breaks down. Don’t love him accepting the role of captain and ditching the program the next week. Really don’t love that he could be at PSU or Miami, but it’s his life. Hope he gets the NIL deal he’s looking for.

Appreciate his time here but this does sort of feel like it ends things on a sour note. I’m sure over time that feeling will subside and we will look back fondly on his time at SU, but right now you can feel the resentment in this thread. It certainly makes you appreciate all of the guys who stayed last year. Not everyone is cut from the same cloth as Marlowe Wax and LeQuint Allen.

Agree.. really wish there was some better resolution for him leaving. It does seem like a sour note. I just hope it doesn't end up that we are playing against him this upcoming year. He definitely made an impact on the team in the last few years, and also made that big difference too and expected to this upcoming year. But, you can't judge it by staying in this age with NIL, and it isn't SU's fault or Penas. He is trying to figure out the best for him, so I respect him. Years ago, they didn't have that chance, now they do with options and of course some are $$$. Well it up to them to decide on how to proceed. We can just move on as fans, and maybe, just maybe, figure out something better.

If it's Penn State I contend it's with a worse QB without even watching Rickie. Drew Allar is trash

He was great last year, no need to discount his performance last year.

That being said there are a large number of guys that can step in

Fran said about Collins: He loves the game,” Brown said. “He’s in here all day. He’s in here watching film. He wants to get better. ... We have three years with him, God willing. Hopefully at least two of them before he tries to go to the NFL or pull a Trebor on us at some point.”
