Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

There wouldn’t be any message to the team if Brown had kept it private.

Peña knows more now than he did in December.
Apparently he knows more now than before the Spring game since this suddenly became an issue after it….December to April is a pretty long time to be sitting on a change of heart.

But you contrarian on with your bad self!

Is there any evidence he had a similar conversation with anyone but the coach?

Eh, don’t know, don’t care. He (evidently) went to the coach with behavior a captain shouldn’t IMHO tolerate from others.

It’s a little like if you went to the dentist and they offered you some chewing tobacco. I don’t know who else they offered it too, I do know they should know better.

Ultimately I’m just answering what difference it makes being a captain. I am saying I think he gets and deserves less slack.

I get that all these guys need to look out for themselves, but I think they’re missing something. Prominent college players often get financial benefits from their association with their school. And if you value non-financial benefits, there’s lifetime adulation from fans of your school. These guys who spend 3-4 years at one school and then bolt for a payday for their last year of eligibility give all that away. The school they left doesn’t think of them as one of theirs (unless the kid won a national championship there) and the new school doesn’t have any strong feeling for them (again, unless they won a national championship).

Most here probably know little to nothing about European soccer, but this is like what happened to Robin van Persie. He was at Arsenal for nearly a decade. Hurt a lot early in his career and then was the best striker in the Premier League for a couple of years. His teams were very good but no titles. Then he forced his way out at the end of his career and spent two years at Manchester United, where he helped them win a title in year one and was terrible in year two. Once he retired, he, unlike a lot of great footballers, had no grounds to go back to as a club legend and he couldn’t understand why. Arsenal fans viewed him as a traitor and Man U fans viewed him as a one-year rental.
I would like this 100x if i could. This is where quick short sighted decisions like this can last a lifetime.

There is some real weirdness here. Pena did his job last year. Did it very well. He has what he sees as a better opportunity for now and in the future. He fulfilled his obligation.

Key employees leave jobs all the time. It’s the organizations job to back fill, not Peña’s.
Yes, they do. But in a 40-year career I have only had two leave after getting a raise and leadership position and one was for a C position with Amazon and I was her reference.

That - or a guy who just cares about getting his.
I might have misunderstood what you meant. My point is simple. Pena left for money. Period end of story and I pretty much know that is a fact. The kid made a call, right or wrong he made it. He didn't go about it very well. At the end of the day, he's a kid who is a very long shot to make the league, so I get it. I don't wish him anything good or bad. I respect Fran for the way he handled it.

After reading these last few pages I’m feeling really great about Kyle McCord’s chances at the next level. TP apparently thinks he’s very special.

This is the point that has me riled. I love Fran! But... Why vilify Pena when many other players / coaches/administrators/come and go with blessings and the negotiations and implications are handled behind closed doors. For some reason Trebor has become a poster child for don't cross that line. Not liking the message.

Hey Trebor...your best interests are our goals. How can we help you and your family? Whelp Trebor...you getting a better offer is not in our best interests... now you are an ass... Smile...

He put Fran in that position. Trebor staying silent does more harm than Fran talking about it. I can already see those not in the know screaming about us not paying people. Trebor justified it how he saw fit and Fran called him on it … we want more program transparency yet now we hate it. Fran is the guy who has to answer for the star slot leaving after a stellar year … Trebor had the chance and still does to air it publicly. I don’t blame him for leaving … he has a shot to maximize his upside but him leaving under a cone of silence puts Fran in a bad spot and I think that is what pissed Fran off, as it should after making the kid a captain and splashing him with fanfare at a postseason DART event.

Scooch if you knew Fran you would realize it's the real deal. He lives it.
Oh I actually believe it. I really wasn’t putting it down, trust me.

Pretty much everyone's has their heels dug in on Trebor's portal and their opinion on his decision. I respect everyone opinion and, in the end, I believe we can cover the slot with the talent we have on our roster.

Both sides can be right in this case. Pena made the right call for him based on the assessment of his prospects as a future pro and his earning potential at another school right now. Additionally, it is extremely disappointing to those who are invested in Cuse FB to be thinking negatively of his decision based on the fact that his NIL had been bumped up prior to Spring and he was put in a leadership position as a Captain… which, he seemingly decided not to embrace his role and responsibilities because of the conflict of his earning potential elsewhere. These can all be true and neither side has to justify the decision, but they do have to live with it and move on.

How you do things matters. Not to beat a dead horse - but it does.

Clearly Trebor handled this in a way that Fran felt was disrespectful and selfish. No other real explanation.

There must be a reason Fran had this reaction to Peña. There’s a lot we don’t know about personal discussions they’ve had. Without all the information it’s just speculation and you can’t blame either one unless we heard both sides and even then there would be stuff left out.

FWIW I got the sense Fran was most upset because he named him captain and instead of leading the team last year like Kyle and Diggs did, he worried about things outside of his control that it’s the coaches job to worry about. Peña also should be smart enough to realize he played with a possible starting NFL QB. Even if he went to Penn St with Allar he almost certainly isn’t replicating those numbers and it will be extremely hard with Beck at Miami.

Only one response explains it all...

It is what is is, and there is nothing we can do other than to speculate.

I’m couldn’t be happier that Fran put it out there. For years we complained about secrecy. I’m happy we have a transparent HC and i think Fran felt he needed to stand up for the program because people automatically assumed we got outbid, etc.

I believe in Fran. Trebor let him and the program down. I root for Orange, not people that walk away from it. Not sure why this is even a debate.
Exactly.

All this grandstanding hope he made the best choice etc thank you etc nah goodbye. You can get why he did it ($) but also not really care anymore as he isn’t on the team.
