Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

Im sure Pena asked for more money on several occasions, the last probably being after spring ball. I’m sure the drop of from McCord to Collins was extremely noticeable and he tried to leverage himself wanting more money to stay and play when he almost certainly wouldn’t put up similar numbers. By then his leverage is lost and like Fran said he’s a 5’11 180lb slot WR. We don’t have unlimited funds like other places so being smart with how we use the collective is important. He then goes to Penn St, which is close to home, and will have a high preseason ranking, signing for about the same money.

A couple things:

1. He would have been a star at Syracuse. A former captain and exceptional member of one of our best offensive teams in the history of the program. He could have come back his entire life, welcome and celebrated as a star. After both the program and he battled through injuries for 4 years and then have 1 hugely successful season mostly because of an all-time great Syracuse QB certainly stings. We showed loyalty to him, and none was shown in return. I believe we were his only major offer out of HS as well, not to mention he was paid at market, and was named captain. Doesn’t help but to feel stabbed in the back.

2. This shows how far away CFB in general has gone from the initial intentions of name image and likeness. With these collectives it’s now the wild west and nothing more than play for pay where athletes, or their managers, negotiate deals. This has to change quickly before CFB is gone forever.

I don’t wish Pena ill will but I also don’t wish him success. This is no longer amateur football. This is semi-pro, or more so, down right professional football.

I'm guessing that Pena wouldn't have sought to leave or been open to it, had he known that Angeli was on his way here.

He made the best decision for his own self-interests with what he knew at the time, knowing that his goal was the NFL.

He was a good player for us, so I won't pile on him too hard. But choosing penn state makes it impossible for me to root for him from here on out.

Exactly! My sentiments as well. But I believe Pena could have stayed and found that Angeli was coming before allowing the bar door to hit him in the butt on his way out.

The fact that he went to ped st is another matter entirely.

Pena is going to take a beating in that conference.

Amen brother. You explained what I’ve been trying to say and articulate for months/years now. Exactly right. Thx

Peña was going to have a down year statistically no matter what.

We passed like silly last year. We had so many weapons and Peña was never really schemed for. And then there’s McCord.

This year, we will throw less and he will be more of the guy. Both are recipes for less touches. Going to Ped St is a bit of a win if he is less than last year, primarily in recruiting. “We maximize your talent and output. State College will give you a Little more money, but you’ll be seeing me back in the portal. Maybe.”

Think that weak mindset is really what made Fran cut and run or at least big part of it. If you're worried that a QB isn't a sure thing then work all Summer and make him better. You don't flinch and run at the first sign of adversity IF you are confident enough in your own abilities. Meeks wouldn't have, that's for damn sure.

I’m skeptical that Pena could have done anything to help Collins not lock on a guy and not work through any progressions at all. After this weekend, I’m certain Pena made the right decisions which ended up with him not being here. Anyone who doesn’t realize that after Saturday is delusional.

Collins is MAYBE a DII QB, absolutely not an FCS QB - and not even playing with prime Jerry Rice would change that.

Pump the breaks until after the Pitt game, imo

I think it's fair to give Rickie 2 more starts, last Saturday was horrendous, IMO. Maybe he can improve over the next two games. Obviously there is a ton of room for improvement and Fran certainly needs to give him more time. As Syracuse fans, I think it's 100% fine to expect that it most likely won't get much better but unfortunately it has to play out for a couple more games. Tough position to be in but not much Fran can do at this point but try to get Rickie ready for SMU. If they get to 3-4 after Pitt then I think you have to reconsider that path for the rest of the season. Could be a tough road ahead.

The defense on the other hand is the bigger issue. Don't think that can be fixed until next year. Clearly, they need a new DC because it's not working, not even close

Peña's current stats at Pedo

15 rec; 182 yards; 12.1 avg; 1 td

Current Syracuse stats

Cook 26 rec; 329 yards; 12.1 avg; 1 td
Gill 16 rec; 318 yards; 20.3 avg; 3 td
JRS 16 rec; 236 yards; 14.8 avg; 5 td
Villari 22 rec; 250 yards; 11.4 avg; 0 td
Nixon 12 rec; 111 yards; 9.3 avg; 0 td

Over the long haul of the season nobody will get near Peña's stats from last year but that's because of Collins.

Pena 2024
84 rec; 941 yards; 11.2 avg; 9 TD

The Syracuse receivers this year are good and more than make up the production. Especially Cook but the QB will be the difference in production at the end of this season.

Yep. Rickie is awful but the defense is just as bad.
As I posted elsewhere true, it’s a negative self sustaining viscous cycle.

BUT when the O is humming (or just competent) it takes SO much pressure off a D in every way physically and mentally allowing for better performance, aka winning a game as was seen earlier this year.

It really all starts with the O, the D is physically lacking so we can’t expect them to set the tone to dominate and win, that’s not the case with O, but you need the leader to lead, at least by example. We had both with Angeli.

Rickie has essentially one last chance to lead/make it happen. Let’s hope it happens and we’re competitive

I think he has two chances. I think the coaches will have the mentality that two weeks to prep for Pitt can fix him. False hope IMO.

I agree he gets the next two games to at least exhibit some adequate QB play, if it's a total trainwreck they go with Carney, if it's just below average type stuff they stick with him. I don't think the staff wants to play Carney this year.

That's some harsh ****.

CDRW was a mess here, but he's crushing it at Marshall so far. Maybe Rickie will end up the same, who knows. But that's P5 to G5 and nothing wrong with going where you have a better chance to succeed.

Not writing him off that he could succeed here based on one start and a couple times being thrown in as backup. Concerned? Of course. But not writing him off.

"MAYBE DII", come on.

Pena nor his new QB Drew Allar are exactly lighting the world on fire. Also was made abundantly clear we were bringing in another QB prior to Pena leaving. You think Pena would have more or less than 150 yards receiving this year with Angeli throwing to him?

Hmm. I'm certain Pena made a business decision to turn his back on the only school that offered him the opportunity to play in a power conference out of high school, to play for that school's biggest regional nemesis who also happened to harbor a serial child molester for years.

I don't wish him ill, but he can kick rocks.
