Tucker on 44

I'm going to spew out what I just placed on Twitter (sorry if it seems funky - I'm copying and pasting my tweets). SU screwed this up.

He deserves 44. Fine with him keeping 34. But IMO Cuse screwed up by not offering it sooner. His interest probably decreased as the university messed with giving it to him. Just retire 44 forever. Call it a day. If Tucker couldn’t get it and now doesn’t want it, nobody should get it.

I don’t think they should have ever retired it in the first place. I mean, I was 8 the last time somebody wore 44 and I’m 30 now . I don’t think we’ve seen a player of Sean’s caliber since 98. I’ve always felt if they didn’t give it to Sean, they probably won’t give it to anybody. I’d love the idea of giving it to a star studded, stat filling playmaker. But if SU waited this long to give a player of his caliber the number and it’s at the point he doesn’t want it, how long will they wait for the next kid?

44 is iconic and I really wish we carried on the legacy of those players with the number. Retiring it killed our biggest recruiting tool. But we are getting to the point where kids don’t really know Ernie or Floyd which is sad. But I don’t want them giving it to someone for the sake of giving it to somebody.

Yeah. Some are comparing the situation to Kenneth Walker, but it's not apples to apples. Walker went from a situation where he was having to share carries and running for under 600 yards to one where his carries have more than doubled as a featured back. Tucker is already a featured back getting all the carries he wants. Making a move has more risk and less reward for Tucker than it did for Walker.
There are bigger stages than SU. We are rarely on network TV. Playing Top 25 teams and greater TV exposure in this NIL world has to be enticing to any kid.

And I didn’t even mention the possibility that one of these larger schools have a guy like Tucker sitting down the depth chart who just needs a kick in the competitive butt to shine and take carries away from Tucker

Wrong take.

Nobody will remember No. 34.

Just as nobody remembers No. 47.
I totally get that and it has always bothered me that Joe Morris doesn't get the acclaim of the players of my youth simply because we have made such a big thing out of #44. It really sucks.

But the people of my generation will be gone before long...I'm checking my watch and it says "don't make any short term plans"...and with them will go the legend. Maybe a young kid coming up will idolize Sean and maybe he will want to wear his number. Maybe Floyd's grandson will wear 44 but all the future good RB's will want to wear 34. Maybe. Probably not, but maybe.

I completely admit that this scenario is far-fetched but for current fans who weren't around 55 years ago to see the last great 44, someday they will be telling younger fans about Sean and not about the 44's. When I was a kid I heard a lot about Vic Hanson from older folks who had watched him in both sports. He was a big deal. Now? The average SU fan has never heard of him.

Even if nobody ends up remembering #34, they will remember Sean Tucker. Maybe the player will become more important than a number that some guys wore when I was a kid and then was sealed in a display case.

And if other numbers sold in quantities that justified Nike selling them, they'd made them. I don't know what jersey sales were like in the early '80's. My guess is that if 47s were be sold, the numbers dropped shortly after Morris graduated. 44 still sells despite no player wearing it for 23 years.

Back in the late 70's-early 80's it was all shirts, sweats and hats. No jerseys.

In the mid-late 80's they started selling 44's They used to be made by Champion.

Nike didn't take over the Syracuse contract until the mid 90's.

We play Notre Dame, Clemson, Wake, UL, etc who all can be ranked next year, FSU etc...this isn't Tuesday night MAC.

Don't sleep on Purdue. They made some splashes this year and return almost all of the offensive production (unless any of them go pro early).

ACC Network is taking a lot of the big games. Which is fine for me, not sure what the kiddos think about it. Resolving Comcast would help.

But for Fios, it's placed right there between the ESPNs, which is nice.

Tuckers reversal on wanting 44.
How many times has he been asked about it I wonder. Maybe this was just his way of silencing all the questions. Who knows?

We don’t know when he changed his mind. Could have been weeks ago. So we don’t know the timing.
I think we all just hope he changed his mind and isn’t just professionally commenting on a foregone conclusion.

If you don’t think Tucker is at least going to consider transferring you have your head in the sand about what’s going on here.

The kid is good enough to win a Heisman. He’s not going to go to a team and “sit behind other RBs” or anything like that. Teams are going to offer him through back channels and promise him the number 1 spot.

The kid wants a bowl and the Heisman and to be drafted. And all three of those look iffy at best at Syracuse currently.

I hope he stays and I think he’s one kid that may stay but you can not sit here and say that there is no chance because there is a going to be a solid chance that A LOT and I mean A LOT of programs are going to reach out to him and sniff around.

Is there actually anybody saying there is no chance he leaves?

He's not going to get drafted if he stays at Cuse? That's insane.

Running backs are also a dime a dozen. Other schools have good ones too. It's why they don't get drafted with the 2nd pick in the draft...wait...

This thread is bonkers - he won't play on real TV, play top 25 teams, or get drafted at Cuse. And will leave because he didn't get a hasty mid-season # switch.

After his production here, I have no zero doubt (major injuries notwithstanding, which could happen anywhere) he gets drafted. People have already mentioned him this year as an outside Heisman candidate at SU, so he will come in next year already hyped as a candidate. How good the team will be will depend on Shrader's (or someone else on the roster) improvement as a passer. As I posted above, once you start anew, you never know what's going to happen. You think Jawhar Jordan transferred to UL thinking he wouldn't touch the field until the end of the season and even then only at the end of blowouts?
Sean and his family strike me as rational and loyal guys. I will be surprised if he transfers.

Just give it to the most deserving player. Every player that had #44 in the past wasn’t all world. I think they are to concerned that the next to have it, is a sure fire hall of famer .

Just use the arfing number!

He said he really didn't want it. Why assume the only reason he does not want it is because he wasn't offered earlier or whatever? To me, he said he didn't want it so case closed. If I were him, I wouldn't want it.

So playing games on the ACCN and RSNs is good for his brand? That will help his Heisman chances and NIL income? His draft prospects (not drafted or not but what round)? We have played 3 games the last 2 seasons on ABC/EPSN. Over the last 5 years we are 10th in the ACC for ABC/ESPN games.

Assuming Pitt doesn't lose, we will have played 3 Top 25 teams this year. Last year we played 4. In 2019 we played ONE. In 2017 and 2018 we played 3 each season. You don't think kids want to play in big games and Bowls?

There's a lot of insanity in this thread...the certifiable kind.

Also for a school known for media and an AD the same what a colossal failure sticking a mike in front of a grieving widow and letting her kill the tradition.

44 is over dead and buried if Tucker never wears it. Don’t ever sell any merch with that number and rub it in peoples faces. It’s like SU golf or baseball.
