Turning Stone was all set to start a sports book in1998, to the point of having the space renovated and employees hired to operate it. Agreements were in place with state politicians. And then the state did a 180 on their position and never gave their approval. So the employees were reassigned and the room became slot machine space.

Normally the Oneida Indian Nation’s position was that NYS had no authority over them, but the land claim was heating up and they didn’t want to push back and create bad local press.

They opened there outlet warehouse (I don’t remember the name) and and closed it a year or so later. It wasn’t really for the general public, but more as a way for gamblers who earned diamond points on their cards to use the points so that Turning Stone could get them off their books before the end of fiscal year. Otherwise they would owe “interest” on the points. The casino did this for years for a week in December, and it went so well they had the misguided thought that it could be successful year round. They were very wrong.
