So with all this worry about our lack of recruiting skill players, seems odd that the talk about Tyler Rouse has died down. Seems like at this time last year we were talking about our next great local RB recruit. He appears to have had a great year, which is comforting considering he no longer had Nick Robinson paving the way, And he seems to have filled out the frame a bit. Any good word out there from the peanut gallery???

His coach is pulling for SU.

Seems very odd if not. I understand that NYC is our focal point, but in Derick Peters and Tyler Rouse you have two local RBs that seem legit... granted, I don't know what their top-end speed is like, but if it's anything like their ypc would indicate, I don't see a reason not to go after them.

As of 2 weeks ago had not heard from Syracuse :(

SU is very aware of Tyler. The issues with him are:

Is Carl putting too much wear on the tread?

He's not the tallest guy around, maybe they don't want to sign another 5'7 power back.

Is he too jacked?
BTW, I doubt Carl would have any problem having his players go to SU.

I've seen him play against local AA schools and he's quick, gets through the hole fast and seems to make very quick decisions and moves the pile at that level. ...but unfortunately, he's like Rene's size (5'7" or 5'8") which limits his ability to play positions other than RB. If he could be like a Ray Rice, then, heck, he'd be a great get.

Same height but Rouse is an absolute beast. He's also going to have taken, and dished out, a lot of hits by the time he is done, football and hockey.

Speaking of Nick Robinson he has been making great progress and has HCDM's full attention.

That's good to hear. He seemed like an ok guy to take a flyer on to fill out the class.

How tall was Malcolm Thomas?

He did just fine as a power back at that same size. Height is an overrated factor for RBs.

I agree...actually it was my point, short running backs can be very effective and many use it to an advantage (smaller target, more difficult to pick up behind a big line, often better balance, etc.) but it can limit other positions he would have the opportunity to play if they gave him a scholarship and RB didn't work out for whatever reason.

Rouse was supposed to be the "can't-miss" kid from CNY since he was a freshman. Doesn't get much more competitive in NYS than Class AA up in CNY, other than out near Rochester and Buffalo. Carter was probably 5'8"-5'9", bailey is 5'7", and both are well built.

There are three or four kids in CNY that will get serious looks in the next couple of years. Rouse, Howard brothers, Peters ... I am sure I am missing a few others. After a few lean years there seems to be an uptick in overall quality of talent coming through CNY again the next couple of years. Now it is time for the programs to start increasing the quantity of these talents.

I think we need more speed at RB, I dont care as much about the size, we need a legit 4.3 guy back there to complement the beef we have

Legit 4.3 guys don't come around very often... 4.4 is still not overly common. In our offense I think you need a powerback first and a speed back to compliment, so if we end up missing out on Perkins, The Sequel, I'd like for us to take a flyer on Peters this year, and hope that Smallwood can be our speed guy. Then take Rouse next year as a combo. We would have three power RBs before Rouse got to campus, but Smith would be a Senior, AAM a junior, and Peters a Soph (and perhaps he ends up moved if we get Rouse).

Don't count on Smallwood

Agreed.

If there are spots left for Marrone next year, maybe he takes a light flyer on Rouse. It wouldn't hurt ticket sales either to have another local product on the team.

His coach was on TV the other night and said Tyler has 4.47 speed in the 40 and that three high majors had offered him including Rutgers. He also excels in the class room, is a great teammate and an all around good kid. He's also very strong.

Checkout this off season workout.
