UBuffalo Wild Wings Postgame

When one of our best SU teams once lost an exhibition game at home to D2 Le Moyne (albeit not playing zone), I learned to not put much stock in glorified scrimmages. With that said, George reminds me a lot of Tyler Ennis (same number and from Canada too) and Betsey can fill the Braswell/Southerland role. Kiyan will learn a lot this year while and be ready to take over the team next year. He actually has a little bit of Moten in his game. Donnie needs to talk to John Wallace about how to effectively play inside out. Hopefully Sadiq plays on Wednesday because he could be a difference maker on defense.
I love your John Wallace reference. I was thinking the same thing last night. I'm not sure if Donnie is as athletic as John was. I'd like to see him establish himself in the paint. It's early.

If JJ wasn’t a local guy he would get absolutely destroyed on here. He is nothing more than a third guard on a good P4 team. The McDonald’s AA game was a long time ago and he hasn’t developed. This team will not go far with him as a top option.
JJ is the only player on this team that can actually get to the rim off the dribble. He missed a couple last night, but everyone else is just hanging out at the three point line. People need to give it a rest with JJ. He’s a big part of this team. People say Kingz should get his minutes. Why? Kingz was totally nonexistent last night on both ends of the court.

George can, Donnie can against a big and Kingz can as well at times.

Kingz plays within the flow and doesn’t force things.

No one forced the issue last night at all. Luke can get to the rim too.

To your point I expect George to play 10 more mins a game.

I also thought he could’ve scored every play offensively on his own. His man couldn’t guard him and he could’ve drew a foul every play down the stretch.

The rotation will be tightened by the first real game. The exhibition games are to get the rust off, see what kind of combinations will work and give everyone a chance to play. Nothing more or less.

Guys, it was a glorified scrimmage. Team will be pretty good once Red gets the rotations down. Betsy looks to be one helluva 6th man

Only thing that I saw that was a certainty is that Kyle’s free throw shooting is going to be a wild ride all year long. The return of Jeremy McNiel.
It was a scrimmage for Buffalo also though, right? They brought in 8 new players who shouldn’t not be as talented. So yeah, it’s the first game, but it’s the first game for both teams and one should’ve dominated from start to finish despite the lineup changes. The bulls played 10 players in pretty even distribution just like Syracuse according to the box score.

thank you. preach this. the negative JJ rhetoric is so poor. we should value someone that can at the very least create his own shot from anywhere. go get a bucket he can try.

Yeah, I'm with you. Many on this board are over the top negative with JJ. I get the frustration with him at times, and share in that frustration usually, but we need JJ this year and in my opinion, will be a big reason for us making the ncaa tournament.

They made 5 straight 3s at the end ( 3 heavily contested) and we didn’t push to win by 30 plus. The obsession that 45-27 didn’t go to 66-27 is getting out of hand.

We played 11 guys- 2 of which we may not see again until garbage time in terms of games that count. They played basically 8.5. That’s not quite the same approach.

I’m just saying, last year we made excuses early that the team needed time to come together and that games like le moyne were a fluke and that proved to be false. I don’t think it’s entirely flawed to see something like 17 turnovers against a really bad Buffalo team and think “this could be a problem” even if it occurred in a scrimmage. If this team isn’t capable of “getting up” for this game then i think that is a problem that needs to be taken seriously. They aren’t good enough to not get up for games.

3 turnovers were miscommunications between George and teammates on the pick and roll. 5 were turnovers with odd lineups we won’t see again which included lazy passes. 4 were by freshmen.

A team full of guys are playing their first game against someone else in a building that’s essentially a road game even if it’s a short trip and a technically neutral location.

We don’t know much about Buffalo except they aren’t some D2 nobody that has zero talent.
Pre season rankings are useless anymore. UB could win their league or they could be worse than they were last year…. One thing is they do have size, they have a stretch big and they have a much more physical team than they’ve had in their first two years along with some talent at guard alongside the experience of Sabol and Batchelor with the addition of Frietag.

Our problems coming into this year have been defense, defense, defense, talent and athleticism. We saw the shift in all of those last night. The rest of the open questions, around coaching, will be pretty well answered over the next month I suspect. The turnovers were not all that concerning in the context of what this was and who committed them.

Oddly enough Buffalo’s best player was a Senior transfer who had never played D1 basketball before and came off their bench. 4 of 6 from deep from a 243 pound forward in his first D1 game. Crazy times we live in.

The part in bold is not true. Our efficiency numbers were much better in February and March of last year then it was earlier in the year. Now we need to be ready to bring it from day one that has been the biggest problem the last five years.
I would argue Red's biggest coaching weakness is that every game, the team seems to have an intensity let down. They totally stopped playing defense when they got up 18, and only Red inserting the starters got the game back under control. Even they gave up another three before restoring order.

McKenna was second team all American at the D2 level, started his career at the Air Force Academy then transferred from there. He was a football and hoops star actually. Digging into his time at Mobile this was a pretty good find actually.

I wouldn’t say they stopped playing defense. Guys like Zephyr play hard but are a clear weak spot when on the floor. The freshmen need to learn what it takes especially Kiyan ( and Betsey needs to be consistent as he can defend well at times). Also, you recruit guys like Sadiq because you need that defensive edge on the floor. That’s part of the equation to keeping that intensity up.

I’m reserving agreeing with your point until we see this team when we get to non scrimmage sub patterns and the top athlete and defender is in the rotation.

We’ve had plenty of subpar defenders over the years but then had guys out there who were either a menace at the top of the zone or around the rim (or had both) that elevated the level of intensity on that end of the floor.

Kingz best attribute is his efficiency. In large part he is so efficient because he is extremely selective... Perhaps to a fault.

My hope is he becomes a little more aggressive in shot selection as the season goes on. He scored 12 on 8 shots. I'd like to see him score 14 on 10 shots. Or 15 on 11 shots.

Slightly less efficient, but more helpful to team as a whole.

Gotcha. Yea I could barely find anything on him. Even the Buffalo coach I guess didn’t know what he was either tho. He was their 6th or 7th man.

Was very impressed by kiyan and fennell. Betsey too of course. I was not expecting kiyan man defense to look as solid as it was. Fennell was smooth and seemed in total control.
Agreed. Some heady plays from Kiyan on defense. Had a block, forced a jump ball, had at least one steal, it was good to see him active there.

Absolutely agreed brother. Also, I was a big fan of how we were on defense through most of the game. The only difference between our TO’s and their’s were we had mental mistakes and terrible passes, where as their turnovers were forced by our effort and athleticism
