AgreeI love your John Wallace reference. I was thinking the same thing last night. I'm not sure if Donnie is as athletic as John was. I'd like to see him establish himself in the paint. It's early.

You make a good point, but you're double-counting steals. They show up as TOs, so it's only six given-away possessions. That's about 10 too many.Looking at the stats, we were the much better team shooting, rebounding, personal fouls, free throws and with assists. There were 2 worrisome stats though - steals and turnovers, both pointing to an issue with ball security. Buffalo had 7 more steals (12 vs 5 ) and 6 less turnovers (17 vs 11). That’s a total of 13 possessions that we just gave away to Buffalo which is bad and made the game this close (we were lucky we excelled in the other areas or it would have been even closer (or worse yet a loss), take care of the ball and it’s a total blowout. It resulted in Buffalo even attempting more shots than we did in the game.
We are playing uptempo with a variety of mixed lineups. I imagine it contributes some to the sloppiness we saw but Buffalo also freely substituted throughout the game too. We had the superior athletes but we lost focus especially in that second half. You just can’t allow giving away that many extra possessions to your opponent. We just have to value the ball more.

My bad on your point. Thank you. However neither is a good look and hopefully they do tighten up their ball security. You make a good point, but you're double-counting steals. They show up as TOs, so it's only six given-away possessions. That's about 10 too many.
DC was the MVP of the McDonald's all star game scoring from everywhere and rebounding. But JB wanted him to play defense and rebound which he did well for 4 years. When he got to the NBA he showed an all around game. Donnie needs to go look at film of a young DC.Have to agree here. I see all the same things you mentioned. Local radio hosts give him so much love and I really haven’t seen what they seem to. He needs a private console with Derrick Coleman to get his butt closer to the basket and learn how to attack and then we’ll see what this kid can be.
Some folks here would bash their kids when the didn’t ride a bike perfectly the first time out.One exhibition game and I can’t believe some of these comments lol. Welcome back to basketball season. They will be fine guys.
Yes, but (as I recall in my dotage) DC was a much more polished player as a freshman.DC was the MVP of the McDonald's all star game scoring from everywhere and rebounding. That's why he was MVP of the all star game , he could handle, shoot, rebound and play defense. Probably came from His mentor Dave Bing.Yes, but (as I recall in my dotage) DC was a much more polished player as a freshman.
Just a note on the JJ and threes stuff and then I will refrain (or not, I know myself) from being a broken record too often, especially because it was an exhibition game, but JJ is a sub 30% career 3PT shooter. Sub 43% from the floor, overall. Which is FINE. He has a lot of other skills that we need desperately.
If he shoots threes at volume, it's a win for the other team. The dude needs to be ferocious attacking the basket. Using his athleticism, first step, strength to get into the paint and he then needs to take advantage of his explosiveness to elevate and understand angles better than anyone else on the court to score.
I really like JJ. He can be a very good player for us. He just needs to be smart in how he gets his points. Him attacking means he gets fouled, means we get into the bonus earlier and it keeps the defense on their heels.
But the dude averages less than 30% on threes on over 4 threes a game for his career. D Wade, who he should model everything after, never shot that many threes per year in the NBA in any year.
Again, to be VERY clear, I think JJ is a good person, a good player and someone we need as one of our core to get back to the NCAAT.
There were several moments against UB where he made some good cuts and others where there was a driving lane on the wing coming off moving or reversing the ball off the high ball screen. That’s where he should be focused on making a living being able to use his speed to get to the rim and the foul line ( or in transition when he has numbers).
A couple open 3s a game is fine and then he has more of a green light if he is hitting early but primarily being focused on being a driver and a ball mover.
At this point comparing Donnie to DC is a mismatch of epic proportions. I'm not sure I see the Wallace comp yet either but i will trust that it's there lurking beneath the surface. That's why he was MVP of the all star game , he could handle, shoot, rebound and play defense. After watching exactly one half of the game, I can state with 95% confidence the minutes should look like this:
PG - Nate 30 mpg, Luke 10mpg
SG - JJ 25 mpg, Kingz 5-10 mpg, Kiyan 5-10 mpg, maybe some Luke for 1-2 min
SF - Kingz 15 mpg, Betsey 20 mpg, Kiyan 5 mpg
PF - Donnie 25-30 mpg, White 10-15 mpg, Betsey for 1-3 if needed
C - Kyle 25-30 mpg, Soure 10 mpg, Donnie or White 5 mpg
Deep reserves - Cheffy, Womack, Zephir
I think we’ll settle down on the turnovers once George gets comfortable with his new teammates. I’m a bit concerned we down have a good low post defense and offensive presence. I like Kyle’s motor, but he’s going to be raw. If he can defend and out-rebound the opponent we should be okay. I see that as our biggest weakness right now.
Positives are this team is a significant athletic upgrade over the past decade’s worth of SU teams. Hopefully they can play under control.
Honestly the riskier passes don’t bother me. The lazy passes from the freshmen and sloppy dribble handoffs though can’t happen.
George missed on a couple of connections with Kyle, including twice when he didn’t roll as expected.
In general he’s in complete command when he’s on the floor even as a release valve.

The threes he took Saturday night were exactly the type you referred to. They were wide open resulting from good ball movement. I would like to see him attack and also try to set up teammates for easy shots. He did find Kyle wide open for a dunk.Yes, he needs to be a driver primarily. The only time I want to see him taking 3's is either pull-up, wide open ones on the break (provided that other guys are running the floor to get a rebound), or if we are swinging the ball around the perimeter and he gets a wide open look. If we stick to those opportunities, and not "hero ball" at the end of the shot clock, I could see him shooting 33-35% this year.
