UConn Roundtable on Conference Realignment

So, to
If ACC stuck Virginia in an old Big East Conference division their incentive to remain loyal to the ACC goes away.

That is the point.

So to avoid having to play Pitt, SU and BC, they'll jump into theB1G meat grinder with PSU, OSU and Michigan and rarely see any of the NC schools?

The Gov of VA forced the ACC to add VT. Does this mean the B1G has to invite VT also?

Sounds flakey to me. But then I said Maryland would never go. But they went for the money only. UVA doesn't need the money.

Maybe we should join the Big 10 if they are going to raid the ACC like the ACC raided the Big East.
You realize Syracuse has no real power in conference realignment right. We don't matter we got our ticket out of the Big East but to think we matter anymore is just not being real.

If the Big Ten could raid the ACC they wouldn't want Syracuse. They want UNC/UVA. Those schools aren't interested but if the ACC was dumb enough to go North/South division and put UVA in the North with the former Big East schools that would piss them off and could give them interest in the Big Ten.

UVA doesn't want to play an Old Big East schedule. They want to play UNC/Duke/Georgia Tech every year. UNC-UVA have the oldest CFB rivalry in the South.

UVA doesn't want to join the Big Ten because of tradition but if the ACC was stupid enough to kill their traditional games your damn right they could be poached.

If your going to do a North/South split always Miami with the Big East schools in the North.

What is the appeal of UVA/UNC? What does that get the Big 10.? Don't give me Baltimore/Washington. They already have Maryland.

North Carolina population 9.9 million
Virginia population 8.3 million

Both schools are the flagship programs of each state and would make the Big Ten Network a lot of money in cable subscriptions.

The Big Ten added RU and UMD for the cable boxes in their states and NYC.
Syracuse is never going to interest the Big Ten.

Please remember the BTN pricing model isn't about markets its about paying more within the B1G footprint than outside it. It would add all the cable outlets within Va and NC to the higher price scheme.

They want us for who we are. Yeah, it sounds awfully egotistical for us to say it, but it's true. They'd want UNC-CHeat primarily for basketball and us for the Olympic Sports and we've been semi-decent in bball lately. Politically, it's a shot across the SEC's bow by entering what previously was their exclusive territory because the ACC has played second fiddle in the South.

We're not tied to VPI anymore. We go to the B1G, they go to the SEC and vice versa. Their entry into the ACC has assured them a place at some table.

Well, if the Big Ten gets UVA and UNC, maybe the ACC will bring in UCONN and WVA and we'll have the Big East North anyway.

If UNC/UVA leave the ACC then the conference will be gutted and it will become just a level above the American.
North/South split could happen if they just put Miami in the North with Old Big East school and whoever the 15/16 teams were.

If UNC and UVa leave the ACC, that league likely collapses, with various schools being scooped up by the SEC and Big XII. The scraps--including SU--would be left behind in a glorified AAC.

I know you pine for a league consisting of the old East Indies. But that dream ended in the mid '60's, when Penn State decided they wanted to be big time, like all of their peer land grant schools in the Big 10, and the service academies slowly began to de-emphasize their programs.

The truth is, the urban Northeast has not been very interested in college football for many decades.

Penn State joining the Big 10 was the end of any hope for a Northeastern conference.

But they did not leave to "go Big Time". They left to facilitate scheduling for all the sports besides football. Paterno had sought an Eastern league for that reason, with PSU football as a hybrid member.

And for years before it became his idea, (because he had become athletic director), he always said "No" to an eastern conference.

Penn State wanted for 2 for 1s. Paterno was arrogant that is why the Eastern Indies didn't form a conference.

If the Big East had invited Penn State in 1979/1980 I wonder if they would have joined a BE football conference as their basketball program would have had a soft landing spot.

The moon will leave the earth before 2 southern schools (who rule the ACC) leave for the B1G. I'm not worried.

If ND agreed to become a full member they could pick whoever they wanted as the 16th team Navy/UConn/West Virginia/Cincinnati whoever they want.

If Notre Dame became a full-time ACC member because of football playoff structure that only conference champions can be in the playoff, then maybe under that scenario we make a run at Penn State. That would be the DREAM football conference for older fans, and then get the Big East back together - our football division would be ND, Penn State, SU, Pitt, BC, Miami, Va Tech - and hell, ask Maryland back, too.

Now that's dreaming.

They moved to "Big Time" long before they joined the Big Ten. In 1966, Beaver Stadium held ~35,000. By 1980, it held more than 83,000. They made the commitment to dominate the East in the mid "60's--with great help from their friends in Harrisburg.

Shudder

Totally off topic, but about 10-12 years ago I was an a general college basketball board, and this fan from West Virginia didn't really insult Syracuse, just vastly underrated our team one year. So I replied "Congratulations to West Virginia on getting the internet!!". If I remember correctly, that was our only interaction.

Maybe I was a little obnoxious, but he immediately sent me a private message saying he would be in Canada over the next month, and he wanted my address so he could come over to kick my ass. He also gave me his name, his address in West Virginia, and his wife's name in case he was not around, as she would know to immediately contact him.

If he wasn't from West Virginia I would have assumed he was just a fake internet tough guy.

I imagine him offering you directions to his house and you replying with "I will just google it." And him saying "What is gaggle?"

i would have taken out gay escort ads on craiglist for both he and his wife...but that's just me

Look at who has power, look at what they want, and look at the revenue drivers. It isn't TV markets. It's about fans and recruiting (academic and otherwise).

Also, the dream of a northeastern conference isn't dead. Power conferences are growing increasingly unwieldy and conferences have split before (see SoCon). Will there be a northeastern conference soon? No. Will there be a northeastern conference one day? Maybe.

Football will be greatly de-emphasized before there is any Northeast conference.

Which, come to think of it, may not be too far-fetched.

Conferences used to be about natural geographical rivalries and and simplifying scheduling. Those days may be gone but they made more sense.

the very simple way to have done an end around of all this crap would have been to simply split CFB off from the standard conference structure.

create a new mechanism for football and let the schools align for CBB and olympic sports as it makes sense.
