UGH...DINO HOT SEAT ODDS

No I despised him since he would make personal insults regarding coach P. Not critical comments regarding coaching but juvenile insults.

Don't read Dan Shaugnessy in Boston then! All these columnists/opinion mouth breathers are paid to be provocative and to get your emotions brewing either in full agreement or in full disagreement. It's the click bait industrial complex

Probably just some more wishful thinking. Typically, the top guy, CEO, type etc. isn't the one with the most technical expertise and knowledge, but rather garnishes that information from his/her subordinates, etc. and ultimately renders the most crucial/critical decisions. He has proven that he doesn't possess that main skill set and capability on the field either, certainly not when the pressure seems to be on.

IMO, other than his good natured disposition and ethical stewardship for the university, he doesn't bring much to the table relative to the main qualities required to win (consistently) at the P5 level.
I can't imagine being this despondent in August. We'll see if it's "wishful thinking" or not. I stand by my assessment and will not hesitate to admit I was wrong if we're under .500 in November. I think Anae makes a difference and gets us over the hump and back to a bowl. I didn't comment about anything broader than that.

The only reason Dino wouldn't be tops on my get canned list? The $10M buyout, and the, let's say, parsimonious nature of SU.
Penny wise and pound foolish the olde saying goes.

Anae's UVA went 6-6 last year. I'm not intelligent enough to know if UVA punched way above their weight or if they were a 6-6 team because of Anae.

Is he moving the needle so much that UVA will be a 2 win team this year and we'll move into a 6-8 win team b/c of this offensive mastermind

It's not exactly a hot take. Dino has had one good season in his six years here. People expect SU to finish at the bottom of the ACC yet again. So for an outsider looking in, which is what this book is, suggesting Dino is most likely to be a goner is pretty logical.

Obviously we all hope it doesn't come to that.

Agreed, if were under .500 again that's 1 winning season in 7 years, in what world wouldn't he be at or near the likely to be fired list.

Brent posted this. I wonder if there's a thought that the assistants are at the ready if we start out terribly and JW has Bronco on speed dial
The potential firing of SU Football Coaches seems to be a preoccupation of Brent Axe.

Honestly, who cares what Brent Axe has to say?

Go to a bowl, and this talk goes away. Fail to do so, and consequences likely ensue.

It's as simple as that. This is a results driven profession.
I give Brent credit for his longevity in the CNY market, but he has never revealed any special insight into the Syracuse University Football Program.

So he made some insulting remarks back when he was 24 years old 20 years ago? That seems like a weird grudge to hold for that long

unfortunately when you are a bottom fish program it comes up more than it should. Brent I would assume hasn't been on this beat for SU hoops with Jim keeping things at a higher level of success.

Let's start winning and we can jump off this list.

I was surprised to see Hafley on that list too. He's not getting fired no matter the record. The Heights love that guy. He's most likely to jump to the NFL, Michigan or Ohio St at some point

UVA last year - record-setting O.
Turrible D.

Anae isn’t responsible for the defense or special teams.
His area did their job.

Great post.

I thought Shafer did a good job his first year. Despite the GaTech debacle, getting a team that lost a ton from the year prior to a bowl game was remarkable. But his recruiting stunk, and his 2nd and 3rd years stunk. He wasn't turning things around, it made sense to move on.

GRob should have been fired after '07. And definitely should have been fired and hauled from the Dome in handcuffs at halftime of the '08 Penn State game.

I think good job is too strong a word. We got our butts kicked (game over at halftime) in 4 of our 6 Ls. Plus the 1st L of the year we looked inept on O. We should have won that game. We should have beaten Pitt too. Can't give up a lead late at home.

He also had an easy schedule. We only played 2 Top 36 Sagarin teams, only 3 Top 51 teams, and only 5 Top 57 teams. He went 0-5 in those games. We were blown out in the 3 Top 51 games. Against teams ranked 73 or higher he went 5-0. Against teams ranked 58-72 he went 2-1. The 2 Ws we won the games at the end. The L was a blowout.

His Ws were against #58 (Bowl game final min score), #64 (home last second score), #73 (road), #86 (home), #91 (home), #113 (road), #236 (home).

So Shafer got creamed vs good teams, beat up on bad teams, and was so so against mediocre teams. He did what was expected record wise.

Anae ran the 3rd best offense in the country at Virginia last year.
  • 515.8 yards per game
  • 392.2 yards passing per game
  • 123.6 yards rushing
  • 43.1 points per game
I don't know if he's a "mastermind" but it's enough to give me hope in August that he and Tony White will give us a good shot at better than expected.

This is the most talented roster Dino has had here. Also the best coaching staff Cuse has seen in probably 20 years. One thing that is going unnoticed a bit and is huge to a team is leadership…something we have been lacking since Dungey.

Jones, Schrader, Elmore, Garrett, Bergeron are all STRONG leaders. These guys get it and legitimately probably our best leaders since Dungey. The only problem is this is the toughest schedule we have had in YEARS. If you took this years coaching staff and team and played last years schedule. Call me bonkers but I think we go 8-4 or 9-3…I said what I said

Dino would have been a goner already at any other P5 school not named SU.

I agree with the point about Dino's staff. The 2012 staff was ok - 2 future NFL HCs and 1 future NFL DC

Do people really think if White becomes the next coach things will change? Recruits are not flocking here. When was the last five star recruit to even VISIT SU.
There is no coach that will get recruits to flock here (outside of guys with huge jobs already and even then... it would be hard). What we need is a coach who can do more with less while building consistency. Then, we'll see a bit of an uptick.

Aside: We do have a lot of talent on the current team, lots of NFL interest. That's despite our record...

Brent has mentioned time and time again that Dino is not losing his job this year barring an absolute disaster. You obviously don't actually listen to what he says, and let others opinions guide yours here.
Brent didn't come up with those odds.
He actually picked them to go bowling.
You're right. I obviously didn't and won't lol. He lost me like 7 years ago.

Not remotely true. In our class of schools, we did what we should have done when we did it. If the buyout number rumored is true, that is prohibitive. There are *a lot* of P5 schools who we are like (small or private or cash strung, mid to bottom of our conference, not a ton of boosters with deep pockets)... Wake, Oregon State, Kansas, Rutgers, Duke, Vanderbilt, North Western, Washington State, Purdue, Iowa State, etc

This.

We won't get the recruits but we can work to find inefficiencies and build around them. That was what we were sold with Dino. So far, it's not happened with any consistency. Time to see it now.

Show me another P5 school in this century that has kept a coach with one winning season in their first 6 years and came back for a 7th season.

He has done nothing since then to change my opinion of him. His insights run from mundane to just plain wrong. He your uncle ?

That's fair. Point being, we won 8 games in a season that propelled Marrone to the NFL. And despite losing our QB, top OL, and top WRs, Shafer managed to win 7 the next year. Maybe Marrone would have won 9 or 10, who knows. But Shafer did alright in year 1. It was year 2 when the wheels came off.
