UNC / ACCT Gameday...

Syracuse is never going to fire Gait so you have to dump March, our offense is junk compared to the other schools. He was on the chopping block a couple of years ago and he's gotta be let go now.

By the way Syracuse is 7th in the nation in turnovers and that's unacceptable.
Yeah 7th in least amount of Turnovers

Despite what literally everyone says, we don't have a general turnover problem.

Clearing yes, but once the ball gets over the line, we really are not that sloppy.

I think the perception is worse because it feels like the turnovers are usually stupid bonehead plays vs the defense making a great move.

This ^, from an overall #s standpoint we are pretty good but a lot of that is SU is normally good to excellent the ball agasint lesser opponents and usually non 10 man teams. The issue is when they do turn it over it looks like last week, inability to clear and 90% of the turnovers are unforced

Anyone watch the Harvard Cornell game yesterday? Cornell is so well coached. Offense and defense are both elite on any surface. In contrast, we continue to underperform both outside and on grass.

The talent is the only reason Syracuse has gotten this far (were even in that game last night) (Syracuse turnovers were a lot more unforced than UNC) and that’s why it concerning and pressure to get the job done this year. Because Gait and co will not have the talent advantage moving forward unless they really show something this next month to sell to the portal on why transfers should come to Cuse. You saw Cori Close in UCLA women’s basketball try a similar model and it’s paid off and they seem set up moving forward. If it gone different though, UCLA would be in a rebuild mode and that’s what this upcoming tournament is going to determine for Syracuse imo.

Goldstein and Firth are both excellent they and Cascadden really cover up any issues especially on defense.

As a few have mentioned, so many unforced sloppy turnovers, especially with a senior laden team. Being at the game last night and witnessing it in full panoramic display, I found to be even more, let's just say, irritating, than watching on TV.

And, what a lousy 4th; being up 9-7 and allowing them 4 goals in no time to start it, just flipped the game in a heartbeat. Watching the UNC fans come to life, in an otherwise, up until that point, a more present and certainly more boisterous SU crowd was simply brutal. Too bad our team didn't show up in the 4th to go along with our fan base that certainly repped/did. :(

Yeah I read that wrong my bad.

Unless you're turning the ball over an insane amount >25 times a game. The turnover statistic is a useless metric to base anything on without context. A pass to a guy wide open on the crease that just so happens to be intercepted on a heads up play by a defender is equal to throwing to ball out of bounds to a wide open player during the clear after a 3 minute defensive stand.

Another thing I think that bothers people that is somewhat due to context is turnovers on the clear. In some games it can appear we're useless on the clear compared to opponents. I think this is in part because we don't run a super structured ride. So when we see our players getting trapped at midfield 4 times a game and the opponent 0 times you think what is going on with us. However, we may actually be clearing against that team at a greater percentage than other teams. Say 87% against a team that usually holds other teams to 82%.

The frustrating part about Syracuse's turnover woes to me is they have somehow have persisted through multiple coaches, players, and iterations of the offense/defense.

Our offense has been getting incredibly inefficient at the end of games. Call it adjustments by the opponent or lack there of on our end. Maybe physically or mentally running out of gas. But this is what has killed us the last two games.

IMO, the top 4 reasons the clearing struggles are persistent:

1.) Always subbing off the rope unit ASAP after a save rather than leaving both SSDMs on. They’ve left Kittelberger or McCarthy on from time to time with some success but not consistently enough to have a go to clearing plan when they need one after a big save late.

2.) Poor goalie passing ability - Mccool throws more moon ball buddy passes than any SU goalie I can recall. These kill 3-7 seconds off every clear attempt and that adds up when you’re waiting 5-10 seconds for personnel changes.

3.) Substitution box chaos. Repeated offsides for a senior laden team is disgraceful.

4.) Few (if any) attempts to engage the Attack to cross over midfield to help. (Probably to avoid additional offsides/chaos).

I know these guys are young n have not seen time at all. But should maby we let pike, meyer even rawson (been on man up) get some runs? Mean hottle hasn’t been much since early in season consistently. If someone isn’t getting it done need to try someone else or least give them a try. Relying to much on joey, finn, leo, rhoa and bear. I loved the switch of bear to attack n leo baxk to midfield. As don’t think unc was expecting that. Eventually they were able to adjust to it so why when they do we switch something up again? As maby throwing leo baxk at attack n throw finn up a midfield ? Or maby even put geb in at finn’s spot n finn baxk tk midfield ?

Their just few ideas to keep the d from figuring out things. With as said giving some other guys run at the middie spot like said meyer pike rawson. Even if it’s just to make someone like hottle or hahn realize “ok if i don’t play well or produce then i’m not gonna play as much”. Which again comes down to coaching n not changing anything or making any adjustments.

I’m just so so tired of watching this team blow it constantly when they clearly had control n chance to win but can’t finish. Also tired of watching our suppose great seniors give lack of effort or hustle in a huge part of the game. Sometimes when dumb mistakes are made ya need to punish that player doesn’t have to be harsh but maby sit for shift or two. So they can think bout what they did n realize ok that isn’t gonna fly.

Now no idea if gait or coaching stuff are even thinking bout these things or fact it’s our seniors making boneheaded plays. Or coaches giving them any grief for them.

We know any press conference they never asked legitimate questions on actual game stuff. It’s always bout stuff that doesn’t matter or help ya win the game. It’s joey n his legacy or gait n his playing days. How bout asking “gary you have made unforced turnovers on unforced turnovers in pivotal moments of the game how are you remedying that? What is the cause for it?” Maby even “ your second line midfield as not produce for weeks isn’t there a change or player that can help spark that line instead running out same group doing zero production ?” Or “ any thoughts on maby running few more guys on D early in game to help keep your main guys fresher toward end of game ? Lastly “ When a player makes a bonehead mistake that clearly cost or hurt team is there any punishment for such play ? Do you sit them or take them off to discuss it even sit them for shift or two ? “

Those just few questions i’d love to have ask. Maby with a nicer tone or worded little better sry i’m not a press guy n i’m very brutally honest. But they are few on top of the clear other questions that need n should be ask like why did ya keep mccool in so long when clearly was struggling to make saves n clear ball. Or how come yous can’t pick up a gb without much pressure let alone pressure on ya. One that should absolutely be asked is “ what in game adjustment did ya make at halftime or even when ND or Unc came out hot in second half ? Also after the poor second half of ND game what did ya do or change to make sure ya didn’t do it again in the unc game?

Mean arnt these just basic questions ?

Rawson being on man up only says hes probably not ready. Meyer has only played attack, in retrospect he should have RS, hate we blew his shirt for a few appeances. Kraftson and McCarthy should be seeing more time. McCarthy ha accuracy issues but he can get open.

Yep, I watched this game. Agreed, Cornell is just a smooth running machine. They don't seem to have many weaknesses. Their offensive flow is impressive and aside from the two attackmen studs, they have plenty of other players who can score. D is tight, goalie is good, faceoffs plenty strong as well. I was impressed.

And yes, as someone else said, Princeton-Cornell is going to be a great game today. I'd LOVE to be sitting outside in CNY this afternoon watching a championship lacrosse game!

Agree on Dwan - put the juice goals aside, he's never been the elite defender he was propped up to be . Tonight he's standing on the crease 3 times begging for the ball when we are in a dogfight that's slipping - never mind the endless dumb late hits and penalties - that's not smart nor is it leadership .
I'm glad someone else picked up on this. Buddy, you're in a very tight game and you're hanging out on the crease like you're an attackman? That's just poor decision making and poor coaching. Get the heck back to your end of the field, dude. Your job isn't to take feeds on the crease.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but the guy seems overweight and out of shape. Could definitely benefit from some footwork drills, jumping rope, etc. He's big, but this is a game of speed and he's just not very nimble at all. I'm speaking objectively here after watching the game, not trying to judge or shame him. He needs to be quicker.

I understand what you're saying about speed but Dwan's issue is he isn't physical on ball. He doesn't make contact or give any resistance so the offensive player runs freely. He is constantly in a back pedal and doesn't take anything away. In my opinion it's not a hard fix. I'm really surprised that his lacrosse family hasn't said anything to him about making the simple adjustment.

Maybe it’s been mentioned by others but interesting that they bumped Beck to Petro the other night. Beck had one bad play I can remember but otherwise did okay (and had a very good hustle play). Seemed like an indictment of Dwans play recently.

I wonder how much of it is him trying to get down to the opponents crease every other clear.

Watching UNC getting skooled by Virginia RN...

This in-game comment really bothered me after the last VA Colsey goal...

"...Virginia relentless and physical on the defensive end... There's no quit in the Orange today."

We've even ceded our own our nickname to a competing ACC school now?? VA is now the Orange??

A small comment but also speaks volumes... Former "Hoo", Matt Ward, made the comment I believe, so guessing it was not an accident... Doosher.

Yeah I dunno... If we have to stick with the player-legend damn the torpedoes, we really deserve mediocrity.

Writing is on the wall at this point and we're lacking in focus, preparedness, and fundamentals to be a top tier program.

Coaching matters and this isn't working with Gait and co.

Throw the kitchen sink at Lars

They sure don’t look too well coached today.
