Duke Gameday...

Some odd stories about Cuse's recruiting efforts. Mike Powell said they didn't really recruit him and was going to go to Fairfield but Ryan stepped in the last minute to get him to commit.
He was the number 2 overall recruit in the country and we had to beat out...Fairfield? I don't know about that one.

Rewatched the game.

I do not like that Dwan was backpedaling inside the hash and never made contact on Johnston. He did the same last year against Pietramala and got torched. That needs to be fixed or we will have an issue.

We will need Leo to give a better effort next week. He was low energy and flat footed at times. watch him when the ball is down on the ground in the offensive end. He stands there and watches to see who is going to get the ball instead of helping. He is cherry picking hoping to get a gift goal. it's BS.

We missed Chuck on defense but overall we weren't as physical as we normally are on defense. We are lacking at LSM without Chuck.

Mandown defense has to tighten up down low. We are getting too high and slow to recover.

He's said as much. He was on someone's Youtube show last year talking about it. Said Cuse never recruited him and he visited a friend at Fairfield and loved the campus so much he wanted to play there. It was almost at the last minute one of his brothers asked him about recruiting and told him it was nonsense and that he was going to Cuse.

ANGELO!
Long time reader/newbie poster: I really and truly don't understand why they don't play Angelo more. JM is 132-234 (56%) with 2 goals and DA coming off the bench cold is 27-53 (51%) with 3 goals. Why not give Angelo some more FO...allow him to get in game rhythm and develop, which will also give Mullen a breather/stay healthy for the title run? Can you imagine if JM goes down. Makes no sense to me.

That is a fair question. One of the insiders should answer it. My guess is that they, coaches, want to bring Angelo along rather than let him get beat up and face a make or break situation.

I am of the opinion you want three that can play FOGO with one or two more coming along, but I am not a coach nor am I experienced so I defer to the coaches and those close to the program.

At the beginning of the season Mullen was 5x better than Angelo.

Angelo has improved, but not yet enough to earn a 50/50 split.

Mullen has enough trouble getting a rhythm without being pulled.

Thanks, OX. Appreciate the review and it makes a lot of sense. Angelo was not ready to start the season, the coaches brought him along and he has improved greatly.

I completely forgot to consider the "rhythm" aspect. Which may or may not explain why I am lot a coach...

In a perfect world we would have a double digit lead in the 4th, and Angelo could play along with FOGO #3.

not just rhythm but timing also. For how much we use mullen n then then little bit of change to angelo can throw off the other teams players. So can be benifit in that way. Faceoffs are weird at times. Mullen seems to do better if he’s reacting rather than trying to time jump right. Not sure if once he violates few times he becomes little more hesitant. He has quick hands so should be reacting anyway but all fogos try to time it.

Believe was what’s his name from ND lynch who use to find out what refs be doing game n then study their cadences. Even so the best practice for fogos is game time reps. Can’t replicate in game experience. Also grant this totally my own opinion of course. But both mullen n angelo try get it out fast n to themslves. Which is prob best with how our wings have been. So who knows if the poor wing play at times got these guys overthinking things or worried bout if don’t win cleanly it’s a lost cause we fail to pick up ball in 50/50 situations.

Winning to yourself always prefer specially if get it out quick to urself before wings can get involved. But with how good some these other fogos are isn’t always that simple. So possible their trying to still win it cleanly n fast n that’s why few times they go not realizing they left ball behind. I use to faceoff when played but wasn’t like it was today. Def completely diff way of being done today then baxk in my day. Either way our wings have to be better helping those guys out for sure. Don’t think when calls for it we do Man/ball n we all just go for the ball. Haven’t looked into teams with great wing play n what they do exactly but either way gotta be able to scoop a gb cleanly whenever there’s chance.

It feels like Angelo has gotten to a point in which he can be counted on to take a handful of draws a game depending on the circumstances, which of course is they have no choice if Mullen gets a violation.

Another thing that stood out to me again this past game, is the decision to start pushing transition. Kittelberger is super athletic and I would be looking to get him the ball on outlets as much as they can.
