UNC Ruling

Syracuse's investigation centered around academic fraud committed on Fab Melo's behalf by a former member of Boehim's coaching staff (director of basketball operations Stan Kissell) to keep him eligible, as well as three other players who the school declined to charge for academic fraud but the NCAA found had portions of mid-terms and papers written by a former basketball secretary and a member of the school's academic services on their home computers to help basketball players maintain their eligibility. The NCAA found that work to constitute an impermissible benefit.

NCAA does not find academic violations in North Carolina investigation

I honestly thought that with the FBI investigation looming and the bad look that gives the NCAA, that they would HAVE to issue some kind of punishment. I mean, from an optics standpoint this just looks CRAZY BAD.

This is institutional nepotism.

It’s beyond the pale. As an aside there were clear emails exposing a grading system coordination for WBB. The fact that this passed muster is almost more offensive

Re-thinking this but the NCAA had to stick to their original finding. They are all in with their model and now they have to play it to the end. I thought the minor programs may get dinged but actually you can't do that and ignore the pink elephant in the room. It is easier and probably smarter, to remove yourself from the entire issue, take the PR hit, and continue to rake in cash. Don't upset the train until someone blows up the tracks, and FBI or no, the schools are the only ones who can do it and they won't because A) schools of UNC's stature know they can get away with anything and B) schools of SU"s stature know they can't afford to fight.

I disagree with it completely, but it was the smart moved by the NCAA.

Still convinced that the two sides will broker a pretty lenient deal because when all is said and done, the NCAA does not want to wade into what is and is not a legitimate college course...

They are more than happy to do so for high schoolers at the early clearinghouse level though...

That was my post from last December. Not sure exactly what was or was not worked out behind the scenes but this is not a surprise. For the NCAA to truly take a hard line stance here would basically require them to create a new arm regularly reviewing the validity and standards of college courses and attendees. That is clearly something they would want no part of.

Once again, the problem is that they are more than willing to do it via the clearinghouse for incoming student athletes. Moral of the story may be that once they get in the door, the focus on the true academic requirements are off of the Board.

this makes us look like complete boobs. I'm less concerned with UNC and more concerned with the legal advice SU is getting on how to handle these NCAA investigations. We either have the worst juice in the political world or our leadership was inept in dealing with an investigation.

Terrible day for Syracuse and how we've handled our stupid infractions.

JFC. UNC used a Law firm who's headquarters are in ffing Syracuse and got off.

The home game vs unc will be the rowdiest and nastiest since the old gtown days. The students have to be creative with their signs.
The sting of this ruling may fade with time... it's not like this ruling is being dropped the day before the game. But more importantly, fan apathy may make all of this moot if SU isn't very competitive this year.
