UNLV QB refuses to play rest of season

A scholie is an incentive to pay. Just like a salary is.

We had 20+ kids who paid to play as well.

If we paid the kids 100K to play then the question is to whether they still get a scholie.

90k in scholie is more like 125K in salary when you factor in taxes and paying for school

Actually, it is reported that the first wages were paid in beer not “money,” which is historically a relatively recent development. A scholarship is a form of payment, after all one is not required to have a scholarship to play. Whether that was fair or sufficient compensation then or now is a separate discussion.

Salt, too. It was essential to preserve meat and fish. That's where the word "salary" comes from.

The most infuriating part about expecting kids to play for nothing but a scholarship and like it is that:

1. Their prime earning window is like 18-28, maybe 18-34 if they're really talented and fortunate. So we're expecting them to give up 12.5% to 40% of their prime earning window for just a scholarship.

2. For a lot of them, their prime earning window is more like 18-25, if they are good college players who won't make the NFL. So it's even worse.

If I'm not mistaken, this is Sluka's last year of eligibility. He currently projects as a late round pick or undrafted, so it's very possible he only makes a few hundred grand in the NFL over the next few years. He was a psych major at Holy Cross, so there's a decent chance that whatever he makes next year in NIL will be in the top 5 earnings years of his career. I assume he'd be starting a professional career in the mid-to-high five figure range.

And people want to make arguments about quitting on his team and school? Nah, his school quit on him.

i want a major war to break out and have teenagers be forced to fight it because i am mad that they are getting paid to be good at a sport with billions of dollars in tv contracts, is quite a take
Okay.
It's already started, bro.

You must be young. US has been involved in proxy wars/mini-invasions since WWII. Arabs been trying to kill Jews for like 1000 years and Putin/Kim Jong been threatening nuclear annihilation since they crawled out of diapers. MSM blows everything up more. Multiple 24 hour news networks make it sound like the world is collapsing every second but it's just their way of making sure you keep tuning in. Nothing's really changed in my 50 years of existence, and that includes forced military service. If this is WW3 then it started in like 1980 after we changed focus from Vietnam to the Middle East and Central America. Now it's Middle East and Ukraine. Russians didn't nuke us when we gave the Taliban enough arms to kick their ass, they aren't going to do it now without serious provocation.

5000 years.
Not young.

Love the entitlement that no one cares about anything but making money and TikTok.

I just want to make sure everyone appreciates that this manages to not answer the actual question, since NIL is paid IN ADDITION TO the scholarship.

I’ll also note that “the scholarship is their pay” is a dumb statement. (You did not make it, but it is being implied here). We have a convention in human societies for thousands of years now that the standard for payment is something called “money” (you may have heard of it). Someone can choose payment in some other medium - but in a legitimate system that is their choice, not something imposed upon them. A scholarship was imposed upon athletes for decades as the compensation for playing, there was no choice involved. It’s a big part of why we got here, payment in something other than money which cannot be negotiated was always legally dubious.
I'll take my retroactive payments with my experience on the job and want the NIL from my name now for going to school with no scholarship but my job performance today that covers nothing, but an athletes name can for sports performance instead during the same time academically for a scholarship too and it the the same arguments about public service and pensions with double dipping. Thanks for clarifying as I didn't say that but here is my argument.
