The last two chapters of what has been one of college lacrosse’s most exciting stories have been … well, ho-hum.
Overall, the 31-game Syracuse-Virginia rivalry breaks down like this: The Cavaliers hold a 16-15 edge. They have outscored the Orange 403-402. Twelve of the 31 games have been decided by a single goal, six of them in overtime. Adding to the parity, and perhaps the most important element, is the two play a similar style of up-tempo lacrosse defined by fast and often furious end-to-end action.

Yet, the two meetings the two have had since Syracuse joined Virginia in the ACC prior to last season have been yawners. Virginia dispatched Syracuse handily last season in Charlottesville, winning by an uncharacteristic five goals (17-12). The Orange answered Sunday before a crowd of 4,775 in the Carrier Dome, jumping to a 7-0 lead and cruising to a 15-9 victory. Syracuse Dominant in Win Over ACC Rival Virginia (LaxMag)

No. 2 Syracuse and No. 6 Virginia have waged one of the most tightly-contested rivalries in college lacrosse, with the Cavaliers holding a slim seven-goal margin over the course of their first 30 meetings.

But on Sunday at the Carrier Dome, that gap quickly withered away to almost nothing.

Virginia threw both man and zone defenses at Syracuse, but attackman Kevin Rice still torched the Cavs for three goals and four helpers as the Orange rolled to a 15-9 victory. Eight Orange players scored, including a combined 10 goals from Rice, Nicky Galasso and Dylan Donahue.

As a result, Syracuse came away with a key victory to kick off ACC play and staked a legitimate claim as the No. 1 team in the country after previously unbeaten Denver fell Friday to North Carolina...
