VT Post Game

With a day to think about it, I think Brenneman and the other guy were the worst announcers We have had this season. I know he has suffered some self-inflicted wounds and is probably in a lower level than he is accustomed to, but Brenneman seemed to have no idea what was going on and was unprepared. Numerous plays they did not identify Players involved in the play including the tackler. The CW production is dreadful and missed numerous plays. They need to do better next week.
I went to game and just now watching TV replay. So far into 3rd qtr they haven’t stopped talking about the two players who are out for VT. It seems almost every play they comment on it. I don’t know how anyone could have watched this live. Unbearable.

Conspiracy theory - re: drops - could it be how McCord was throwing the ball, OR if it was the ball?
(we're in a dome, so weather didn't have an impact, like in Green Bay today...)
I think all 3 just had a brain fart terrible play. The OG drop on the first drive wasn't that easy a catch. Pena's 3rd down at the 10 might have been a little hot but hes got to make that one same with Meeks drop right before.

Corners for VT were good as well. Hatcher and Gill were the ones who killed us on those 2 plays but at least JRS stepped up in the moment and we can hopefully never see those two on the field again. Are we not worrying about Ross, Hornsby, and Thomas's redshirts?

They eventually showed a replay, so if you have the game recorded, you can see.

SU had a gadget formation with half the team lined up near the sideline, the other half around the ball. LaQuint went in motion from the sideline group toward the ball. Handoff to LaQuint and VT had no idea what was going on. 16 yard gain.
That ticked me off. I purposely wanted to get home from the game and watch the replay so I could get a second look at how SU set and VT defended that play. Then they missed missed. My wife and I just looked at each other like WTH.

Fran wasn’t a bad hire. I’d fire some of you all fans before Fran. Just saying.
He is a great hire. He stepped into a culture where guys expect to lose in November. He is recruiting at a level hereto unknown at SU. His reputation among HS coaches and the young men he is recruiting is above reproach. As he develops a comfort level leading his subordinates, things will only improve.
I am curious to see how he fixes special teams.

Fran said it’s because he was chirping at the VT bench
Watching the replay, it looked like LA spit, or blew snot from his nose on the VT sideline right in front of the kid in the yellow shirt who was helping signaling the plays. I don’t know if it was deliberate or not. But that’s what it looked like.

Fran said it’s because he was chirping at the VT bench
The announcer was right and said normally the bench would be chirping back.

They gave us a makeup flag the next play there's no reason for Fran to go after the refs. I think both teams benefited from one huge drive killing bad call each during the game. That block on the back saved us and I remember them getting a weak call somewhere.

If you can get it, watch a replay of last night’s ACC Huddle. All of the men love Fran. Richt said he was doing everything right and was truly humble and willing to ask for help when he needed it. The three more recent players all said they would love to play for him. MacLaine especially said “I wish I could have played for a guy like him.” (Think I got the quote right).

It seems to me that rule of hurdling must have changed. I have seen it in pretty much every game we have played this year. It seems like as long as they are not lined up over the long snapper, than hurdling is legal again.
Yeah I agree... it's not being called much, and the rule has def changed a few times since defenders started sprinting and hurdling the line to block place kicks.

Wohlabaugh was in at LT and Joe Cruz was in at LG for a series early in the 4th. I’d have to go back and watch but it seemed like they were controlling the LOS
Josh Ilaoa was also in at center for Big General.

Was en route to the Dome this morning but had to make an emergency stop at the Geneva hospital for my wife. She had a respiratory infection early last week that’s turned into pneumonia. Sucks we had to miss this game but that was a good, hard fought win today.
I have pneumonia that kept me away from work and able to watch the game. I hope your wife can breathe easily and get some rest.

Watched the replay tonight. Just a couple other observations:

That Peña throwback to McCord was set up well if just one of the 4 OL lay a hand on the only Va Tech player there. Oof.

Why did Schlee not just waltz into the end zone in OT.

Allen ran downhill and hit the hole hard all game long. Much more definitive decisions from him. That silly ref cam really showed how well some of his runs were blocked. Cannot overstate how much I approve of the old school Walter Payton over the top dives to get into the end zone.

JRS is going to be a problem when he gets healthy. Good routes, strong hands. But watching him hobble down the sideline was rough.

Defensively we’ve got a lot of work to do. Tackling has been just atrocious. Va Tech broke so many tackles..it was terrible. Our DL does not put up enough residence to prevent teams from getting to the second level. But we tend to tighten up in the red zone when we need it and make just enough plays to get stops. But when your at home and there’s a Bronx cheer because sineine made a tackle….its an issue.

I know special teams have been rough, but Stonehouse got off a couple bombs and his hustle to chase down the blocked xtra point was great. But being down to your 3rd kicker is not ideal. The blocking on both punt and kicks has been, well, dubious. Kicks shouldn’t be breath holding moments every week.

Really like the color guy on the broadcast. He was top notch. Brennamen was reading off the wrong roster for part of the game, and couldn’t keep up with the game speed other tines.

How the hell does the producer/director linger on a graphic and miss the first play of OT. Ooof. That’s bad. But I guess we’re getting the same crew this week…

As I saw it, he had a receiver running in the same direction about 5-8 yards downfield being covered by Barron. Barron seemed to think or recognize Schlee was going to run for it so he came off the receiver to make a play. When he did, Schlee felt he could take advantage and throw to the receiver who was just left by Barron, but because he was throwing against his body and the angle Barron took cut a lot of the passing lane, it went behind the receiver and fell incomplete.

Brennaman is a broken shell of a man these days.

I remember one pretty weak PI against Villari late in the game that benefitted us. It was PI by the letter of the law but I guess negated the lack of PI on the earlier Hatcher play.

I also believe he was pretty hurt at that point and maybe didn’t feel that confident vs passing it.

Really should have been called a holding not PI, but a definite foul. He grabbed Vallari early in the route before pass was airborne.

He grabbed his arm and slowed his momentum big time. Was a house call if there was no contact.
