Jenn Gilligan tied a career high with 31 saves, but North Dakota (10-9-2, 6-8-2 WCHA) managed to earn a 4-1 win in the series opener and first ever meeting between the two teams.
Syracuse (5-10-7, 4-2-3 CHA) was out-shot 35-15 in the contest, with freshman forward
Stephanie Grossi scoring the only goal for the Orange to add to her team-leading 18 points.
North Dakota first got on the board with less than one minute remaining in the first period, as Gracen Hirschy lit the lamp.
Midway through the second period, UND added cushion to its lead when Layla Marvin scored a power play goal to open up a 2-0 advantage.
North Dakota tacked on its third goal with just under nine minutes to play after Kayla Gardner recorded the tally.
Grossi pulled the Orange back to within two with 6:26 to play.
Melissa Piacentini and
Alysha Burriss were credited with the helpers, adding a point to each of SU's top-three scorers in the process.
UND tacked on an empty-net goal in the closing seconds to form the final result.
Syracuse won 3-of-50 faceoffs in the game.
The Orange will get its chance at redemption on Sunday at 3 p.m. eastern (2 p.m. local time) in the final non-conference game of the season.
