Was Johnny Flynn

Its Flynn by a long shot. He’d end up one of our greatest pros of all time too if he hadn’t been devastated by injury.

Kurt Rambis would disagree with this.

Jonny Flynn is the most amazing athlete ever to run the 1 at Syracuse. He was terrific.

But he couldn't shine The General's shoes.

Winner, who made everyone around him better. Can't say the same for Flynn.

Yup. Kurt Rambis would agree with this.

.284 career win percentage though.

Yeah, he was no great shakes. But that uncoachable tag sure stuck to Flynn. Electric player, provided me with a whole lot of awesome moments at SU. I still think that he'd have been out of the league in a few years, hip or no hip. His personality just didn't do him any favors with coaches and front offices.

Am I missing some kind of joke, here? Cause we're about to come to blows if you really believe this about Flynn.

Depends on if Sherman Douglas was actually 6 ft?
For this question it doesn't matter. Unless there are people that think Sherm was taller than 6'0" (he was listed at 6'0"). I've looked and can't find anywhere or anyone suggesting he was. So he qualifies under the "'6'0" and under" question in the thread title. So no, Jonny was not SU's best 6'0" Sherm was. Were there things Jonny did better than Sherm? Absolutely! But when Sherm graduated he had more assists than any player in NCAA history. Not SU history, NCAA history. And even if Jonny had stayed 4 years he would likely not have caught Sherm as Sherm averaged almost a full assist per game more. So I go Sherm, Jonny and then Bug. I only saw Bug play 1 season and he was exciting and quick, but only averaged half as many assists as Jonny did with comparable scoring #'s. Putting Bug ahead of Jonny is revisionist at its best.

I would have loved to watch a healthy Jonny play in the NBA a few years.

Clarifying, Kurt Rambis was no great shakes as a coach. Flynn was good. But the rest of it, yeah.

I don't believe for one second that Flynn was anything but highly coachable

Actual size?

Sherm
Gmac
Flynn.

None are actually 6ft despite the roster.

I had always thought GMac actually clipped six foot. Guess not, eh?

You mean other than changing JBs defensive calls on the fly? Which happened repeatedlly.

I’m of the opinion that that team changed JB. He will never ever ever say it publicly, because that’s not who he is, but the Flynn, Harris team that blew all those leads drove him crazy on and off the court and altered some of his philosophy.

Flynn blowing off JBs instructions. Harris pouting and disappearing to Niagara Falls.

Harris opening up Manley by himself at like 2am, not able to turn the lights on and then pulling his car inside to play under the light of his headlights might be the greatest untold tale.

And I haven’t even touched on Devo.

That team was nuts.

I mean, Devo and Harris "went pro".

And we had an incredible year without Flynn, Devo and Harris the very next year on a team that would have won a title if Arinze doesn't get hurt.

I'm not within the length of I-95 of inside info that you have, but from the bits I've heard about that team (I swear to you I heard a thing about Flynn before it got out that came from a friend's mailman in Binghamton, I kid you not), JB may have swung too far in the other direction as of late, but that 2009 team, even from the bits I heard, had to have fundamentally changed him, especially with that next team doing so well.

[EDIT: I want to be clear bc I've been hard on JB lately. I'm fine for him changing after that team. He had every right to do so.]

I hope he changes again. He has every reason to do so.

Yep, not disputing that. Just saying, I think he has title #2 because of that change post 2009. Got to give credit when its due.

Jonny or Bug
I was thinking about Bug Williams too...but a solid lean to Jonny. He played overall much better teams than Bug faced. He also was a lottery pick and destined for a solid career until the injury.

Check out the Converse All Stars...what every kid in CNY wanted in the mid 70s.

This, through and through.

The guy who would pretend he couldn't hear Boeheim when he'd call a play in? And changing out of zone to man when he felt like it?

Haha, I thought this was common knowledge.
and his man-to-man skills were vastly overrated. He was great here, but his stature seems a little inflated. I remember seeing him and Harris after an NCAA win in Miami honking at JB, Hop and others as they walked to the hotel and they were taking off in a Jeep, tunes thumping, waiving. Funny scene.

That's unfortunate, because those were some of our most fun and easy to root for teams of all time.

Weird, because I've never once heard that

Then it sounds like you've built up an idyllic version of Jonny Flynn, that differs from the reality.

I 100% concede that he was an eye-popping athlete -- loved watching him play. He had athletic tools you just can't teach. But he was a massive headache for his college coach, and he was a massive headache for his NBA team. Well documented.

And then the next guy taken is arguably one of the best superstar teammates ever and becomes the greatest shooter ever.

Heard gottlieb talking about Jonny today. Is this how this thread got started?
