Looking for the thoughts of fairly recent SU grads. What do you think of SU's Greek system? Have any comments on specific frats? Were you in one?

Oh lord... here we go... I believe CTO started a thread about this last year and it turned into a WWE match.

Is it for your son? Join 1. He's not going to regret it. He can be as active or inactive as he chooses to be.

I loved it - but my Frat is temporarily not available :bang:

I was in a fraternity. I quit JR year. I made great friends at it, but the politics involved were not fun.

Long story short I was in the same frat as Brian Shaw, the cheerleader who killed his daughter's mother.

That pretty much split the house in half.

Not a recent grad, I graduated over 20yrs ago. If for your son, I would say that he should check it out and see if he's comfortable with the guys already in the house and the potential pledge class. I gotta say that practically all my good friends to this day are all my fraternity brothers. The best part is anytime I go to a major city in the country, there is usually a brother nearby that I can hang out with for few beers.

I remember that thread. It became more of s pro/con Greek life. I'm more curious about specific frats at SU. Yea son has been doing rush week. He's leaning towards joining a frat but isn't 100% yet. He visited about 15 houses for 20-30 mins each then tonight is going to spend 1-2 hours at his "top 4". Yea, he ranked them all. He showed me but I have no clue so thought I'd get some insight here.

My son graduated in 2013. He is currently backpacking in Myanmar so I'll relay what he said to me in the past. He was VERY VERY happy with his decision not to join a frat. He had a great group of friends and none of them joined frats. For his junior and senior years 7 of them rented a house together in the Comstock/Ostrom area and it worked out very well. In his not so humble opinion a lot of the frat boys were . Also he found out during pledge week he would have to miss a basketball game in order to pledge. That made the decision easy for him but he was already leaning against joining.

I didn't attend SU but was in Greek Life at Oswego. Personally, I gained my closest friends through WTOP-10 and working Live Sports. I'm certainly not against Greek Life but I regret not joining WTOP-10 sooner.

I wasn't in a frat but roomed with 3 frat brothers in my time at Oswego. My only advice is that it can get expensive quick. I generally wouldn't recommend living in a frat house, as I've heard plenty of horror stories, though I'm sure some houses are better than others. And you're not necessarily going to make your money back in the 'free' alcohol unless you drink excessively 3 nights per week, which actually isn't far-fetched for college kids.

I was in one at SU. I enjoyed it as it was rewarding for me. We treated our house well when I was there - can't speak for other houses. My three groomsmen at my wedding were all in my fraternity (though in fairness, I knew them before I joined). I think there's no harm in him rushing and deciding if it's for him.

Which frat?

My vote is to make friends the old fashioned way -- befriend people that have similar interests as you and will be your friend even if you don't give them the chance to torture you for a week.

I was in a house.

Different houses have different reps:

- Broad backgrounds vs narrower backgrounds of the brothers in house
- Higher commitment vs less of a commitment
- Tougher on pledges vs less tough on pledges

Some houses may have evolved since I was there but, if you PM me the list, I can certainly comment on the ones I am familiar with.

How long ago did you graduate?

constant evolvement within the frats. He'll have a better feel for them than just about anyone that graduated more than 3 or 4 years ago. I am 9 year gone this May, I may as well be a Dinosaur.

I graduated just a couple years ago. I was a proud Geed but had many friends in SAE. They are the best frat imo.

Edit although I am just remembering now they may have just been kicked off campus within the last year. Oh well.

Was Rony Seikaly in your frat -- he graduated that year, as well. And if so, since he's already Greek, was he able to bypass the hazing process?

Seikaly lived in Greece but he is Lebanese.

I don't think Seikaly was in a house.

I didn't respond originally, since you asked for "fairly recent SU grads" but good to see my own fraternity so well represented here (Forza and BrianOrange). A few differerent eras covered too, and it's still a great house! I even lived in the house for 3 years (the University doesn't let you Freshman year). Loved every minute of it. So if your son lives on campus anyway, I recommend he consider living in whatever fraternity he ends up joining. There were so many fun impromptu things and moments that the brothers living outside of the house sometimes would miss if they didn't happen to be there at the time.
