SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 21 Syracuse University women's basketball team will take on its third Atlantic Coast Conference-foe during the 2014-15 season when it plays hosts to Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The in-conference showdown will begin at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

In the Orange's latest contest, Syracuse came up just short on the road against No. 13/12 Duke, losing 74-72 on Jan. 8. The squad tied the contest up with 52 seconds remaining after a 3-point field goal from junior guard Brianna Butler. A lay-up from junior guard Cornelia Fondren rimmed out with seconds remaining, which would have tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Virginia comes into the Carrier Dome with the top mark in ACC play thus far this year. The Cavaliers are a perfect 2-0 in conference competition, defeating Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. On the other hand, Syracuse has yet to win a game against ACC opposition in 2014-15, suffering losses to Duke and Notre Dame.

Locked In
Junior guard Brianna Butler has continued to prove she is a threat from anywhere on the court for opposing defenses. Butler currently averages 13.7 points per game, which ranks second on the team and 20th in the ACC. She has been locked in since the start of ACC play, leading the team in scoring in conference competition, averaging 21.0 points per game.

One could easily say that Butler's strength is her 3-point shooting. With 3.0 3-point field goals made per game, she leads the ACC and ranks 13th in the nation. Butler has knocked down at least four 3-point field goals on five different occasions during the 2014-15 season. She is 32 3-point field goals shy of the Syracuse career record currently held by Julie McBride, who sank 229 from 2001-04.

In the team's first-ever trip to historic Cameron Indoor Stadium, Butler put together her best outing of the season, thus far. Butler scored a season-best 23 points on seven 3-point field goals, which matched a career-best. She knocked down three 3-point field goals in the final seven minutes of play at No. 13/12 Duke, including the game-tying 3-point field goal with 52 seconds remaining in regulation.

The junior guard started off conference competition with a bang against No. 4/4 Notre Dame on Jan. 4. Butler led the team with 19 points against the Fighting Irish, the 2013 national runner-up. She has led the team in scoring five times in 2014-15, which leads the squad. In addition, she has cracked double-digits on 12 occasions, which ranks second on the Orange.

After only managing five and seven points, respectively, in the team's first two outings of the 2014-15 season, Butler scored in double-figures in 10 consecutive games. In that time, she scored more than 15 points on five different occasions. The King of Prussia, Pa. native has scored 18 points twice this season, both coming against two of the nation's top teams, South Carolina and Michigan State.

Conference Competition
The Orange enters its second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014-15. Through two games in conference competition in 2014-15, Syracuse has yet to score a victory against ACC opposition, losing to perennial powers Duke and Notre Dame.

In its first season in the league in 2013-14, the squad owned a 10-6 mark in conference play. Similar to this season, the team dropped its first two contests against ACC foes, but won 10 of its last 14 games in conference competition to finish in fifth place during the regular season.

Series Breakdown
Syracuse and Virginia will meet for the sixth time all-time on Sunday afternoon. Virginia owns a 3-2 advantage in the series, but Syracuse has won the past two contests. It marks the Cavaliers' third trip to Syracuse, where the teams have split their two previous meetings, as well.

Last year, the Orange scored an 84-75 victory against Virginia on Jan. 26, 2014 in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome. Brittney Sykes scored 27 points to lead the team to its third consecutive victory in conference competition

#21 Syracuse Scores First ACC Win
Syracuse knocks down 12 3-point field goals against Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –
The No. 21 Syracuse University women's basketball team recorded its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the 2014-15 season with a 70-58 win against Virginia on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.

"This was a must win," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I thought that we had to have this game, that this was a must win. It was a critical game for us in this conference. We couldn't drop another home game no matter who it was against. I thought that our kids came out and played really, really tough early and that was a key in this game. Second half, they came out and made a little run at us, but we settled down and did some things to stop the run."

Sophomore guard Alexis Peterson led the squad in scoring for the fifth time in 2014-15 with 16 points on the day. Senior guard Maggie Morrison finished with a personal-best 12 points, as well. Sophomore center Briana Day had her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards.
For the second game in-a-row, Syracuse (11-5, 1-2) was hot beyond the 3-point line. The Orange knocked down 12 3-point field goals, 44 percent of its attempts, on the day, its second-most during the 2014-15 season. In the past two contests, the club has recorded 25 3-point field goals.

Peterson scored the first 10 points for the Orange against Virginia (12-4, 2-1), putting the club ahead, 10-2, with 14:37 left in the first half. In the first six minutes of the game, Peterson scored 10 points, marking the ninth straight game with at least 10 points. She has scored in double-figures a team-best 14 times during the 2014-15 season.

Virginia would cut Syracuse's lead to 21-17 with 7:44 remaining in the opening period. Senior guards Diamond Henderson and Morrison would hit back-to-back 3-point field goals to put the squad back ahead 10 points.

Morrison was on fire from beyond the arc. The Millersville, Md. Native knocked down her first four 3-point field goal attempts, all coming in the final 5:59 minutes of play in the first half. In just six minutes, she set career-highs in points scored and 3-point field goals, fueling the Orange to a 41-23 halftime lead.
Out of the halftime break, Virginia came out and seized the early momentum. The Cavaliers went on an 11-3 run in the opening four minutes of the second half, making it a 44-34 contest. With 12:30 remaining, UVA sophomore guard Breyana Mason knocked down two free throws to cut the deficit to under 10 points, as Syracuse led 50-41.

Junior forward Taylor Ford knocked down consecutive 3-point field goals to make it a 15-point game with 10 minutes remaining. Virginia would combat with two straight from the beyond arc to make it 58-49 with nine minutes left in regulation. That would be the closest it would get for the visiting Cavaliers, as Syracuse recorded a 12-point win.

The Orange women's basketball team will be back in competition on Thursday night against Wake Forest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Morrison's Career Day Provides Spark for 'Cuse
Maggie Morrison hit 4-of-5 3-point attempts in win over Virginia

It took less than six minutes on the floor for senior guard Maggie Morrison to set a new career high in Sunday's 70-58 win over Virginia.

A transfer from Vanderbilt in her first year of action with the Orange, Morrison provided an immediate spark off the bench for 'Cuse, drilling her first four 3-point attempts spurring a 21-7 run at the end of the first half that allowed Syracuse to pull away for good.

"I thought Maggie was incredible," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "She came in the game and really stabilized us. She's the one that really got us the 18-point lead."

Morrison's only missed shot of the half came as she tried to beat the buzzer for her fifth three of the frame.

"It definitely felt really good to finally get my shot back, but I think it's even better that my teammates kept showing their confidence in me," Morrison said. "I've struggled a little bit the first half of the season, but they've never given up on me, they keep passing me the ball and kept looking for me in the offense, which felt good."

Her 80-percent mark from long range helped push the Syracuse 3-point percentage to a season high 44.4 (12-of-27) in the game to pick up its first win in ACC play. She also grabbed a pair of rebounds in the contest.

Morrison will look to continue her hot streak on Thursday, Jan. 15, when the Orange host Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
