The best example of what our program is or can be is Iowa. We cant afford to get a guy who will leave and jump on a bigger ship leaving us to start over again. I want consistency like Kirk Ferentz gives hawkeye nation. He might not be considered one of the best coaches in the country but he is well respected, his teams play hard despite being less talented. They go through their ups and downs as a program but he built his brand and sticks to it. This is what I think Shafer can bring to us. He needs to improve his game day decisions but I think he can be a steady head coach who can bring us a conference championship here and there. Look at Ferentz first 3 years and then look at the 4th year. We need consistency in upstate NY. If we are loyal to him he just may stay loyal to us like Frentz is with Iowa. Shafer will get paid like other ACC coaches if he shows progress like this. BTW, 4 years ago people wanted Ferentz fired. How are they doing this year? lol, This is what the SU football program needs. We are never going to be a Michigan or Ohio St but we can be an Iowa.

Marrone was supposed to be our Kirk Ferentz. Idiots like me fell for it.
Your right but Marrone had aspirations to be a NFL head coach right from the start.

I've heard more than once in that time that Kirk Ferentz was "on the hot seat". In fact, that record is probably our ceiling in this conference and if we could do that over the next 17 seasons, we should be very happy.

If Kirk Ferentz hadn't been given that ludicrous 11 YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION in 2009, he'd have been fired in 2012.

Seriously, that buyout was the most glorious piece of dumb decision making in the past 25 years of College Football.

I never understood that, the guy is one hell of a coach. There are nfl teams who would be lining up for his services.

Its funny because before he was on the hot seat (you are right about that), he was also considered one of the top coaches in the nation too.

We would kill for a record like that since 2001. Sigh...

Had one, but he got fired in 2004.

Impossible to overestimate the negative impact the P/Robinson exchange had on the program.

Gross 'ed up managing the football program from the drop.

we had one, his name was Paul Pasqualoni. Records are very similar. Issue with Paul's end game was not having a Venables/Morris to run the offense/defense and recruit energetically.

I always thought Iowa understood what they were vs what they think they are. It's a 8-5 type team w occasional 10 win season. Sounds familiar

Lets put the blame where it belongs, and thats on the hiring of robinson.

If there's no need to make a move now, there was absolutely no "NEED" to make a move then.

The guy was four years removed from a 10-3 season and had one losing season in 14. Mismanagement for an AD and Chancellor to make such a big change so soon into their time here. Unbelievable arrogance on both their parts.

Idiots.

Ferentz was the college name for the pros for like 5 years. It just didnt work out for him.

I dont think P was a Ferentz, but 100% correct on the P/Robinson exchange.

Ah... good points on the coordinators. Deleone was the most 1970's CNY guy ever

must not know how Iowa fans feel about Kirk then

Like this multiple times!

Do you remember Pasqualoni's tenure at Uconn a few later? It wasn't pretty.

We need a long-term guy and we got one.

How do we know that Shafer is a long-term guy? Is there any reason to think he wouldn't take a better job if the opportunity arose? We're his 8th coaching stop.

We can rewrite history but the time had come for Coach P to leave...his time at UConn I think shows that.
His recruiting dropped off the cliff near the end...yes, the administration should've done more but he had too many What losses.

The school screwed up by the timing of the firing...and hiring a guy who was in over his head running a program.

My comment about killing for a record like that is from the long recovery from the GRob debacle. The administration dragged their feet on the IPF and that was one of the reasons Doug left us in a bind...

Yes. Coach Shafer is a guy who we could count on to stay.

I obviously hope you're right, but are we really going to seduce ourselves into believing that after Marrone?

Coach Shafer is a MAC guy and from NE Ohio...Urban Meyer is at tOSU and his buddy is at Pitt...I think those are the two most likely places he might think about going to. I really think he is the type of guy who is very likely to stay for the long term. If he is successful though...SU is going to have to pay to keep him. He would have to string together 4-5 years of 8-11 win seasons for tOSU to consider him (assuming Urban quits or gets fired).

why do we need a kirk ferentz?

why are we worried about consistency? the first step is to find someone good. once you find someone good, you hope like hell that they stay. i just don't understand trying to solve the consistency question first. it's pretty rare to find a guy who NFL teams want that will stay, seems pointless to think ADs can identify the guys good enough to leave that will stay. They just got lucky

and they haven't been above 50th in yards per game since at least 2008.

it's hard to find someone that good that isn't better on offense and it's hard to find someone that good who will stay
