We NEED to add a guard to the 2012 recuiting class!!!!

Marvin Williams. UNC's 6th man, #2 draft pick '05.
And he helped to bring that team to a National Championship. This was my point with Dion. Short of a Final Four and/or National Championship with him contributing in a big way, I don't think there will be lottery pick interest until next year.

Not to quibble with what seems to be your tertiary point, but Syracuse's offense rarely features the bigs. Our center is typically our fifth offensive option, and many have lamented the fact that Boeheim has starved some of his better post talent (Ellis, Onuaku).
Both Ricky and AO had more plays ran for them than Kentucky does runs for theirs bigs and Kentucky's bigs are far more talented. Cousin would have gotten twice as many touches under JB.

I think you are missing the main problem: there are no elite guards remaining for the class of 2012. Anyone that we bring in with the current class would just be a "filler". We've had a few of those guys in the past and they didn't work out too well (See Michael Edwards, David Patrick, etc).

They just need to identify a solid, elite guard prospect for 2013 or 2014 and go get him.
You maybe correct on that but there are always sleepers out there plus we are so loaded one miss doesn't kill us. The worse thing that happens is the kid gets beat out the following year.

I like the original post. And I like the spoiled rotten posts as well.

A elite experienced trasfer who is good off the dribble would be a nice addition next to cooney and is always a possibility.

I don't think it is fair to expect Dion to have the numbers Walker had. For most of last season WKemba was UCONN's only real option. As the year went on he got mre help, but on this team Dion does not have to nor should he expect to do nmost of the scoring himself. S.U. has plenty of legit options, a developing "Air Craft Carrier" for a center. Dion is an exciting player on an exciting team that from the start of the season has had a lot of guys who can be double digit scorers on a lot of teams.

John Wall had the ball in his hands all of the time. The ball does not need to go through Dion for S.U. to win. He is exciting and has a chance to be a good NBA player, but he needs to spend the next two years developing a complete game to get to be an NBA star.

I believe Dion his gone after this year (and he should be) I am concerned the MCW will blow up next year and leave as well. And that would leave us with:

2012-13
MCW
Cooney
Triche

2013-14
Cooney
FRESHMEN
FRESHMEN

See the problem!

Relax. Neither Fab nor Dion are leaving. Both need a lot of work before they can compete and stick at the next level. They each need another year regardless of what this team accomplishes.

Not worried about 2012 unless both MCW and Dion jumped. 2013 however is a different story.

I love Dion, but he is our 6th man. How is this conversation even relevant? Unless we make it to the Final Four because of him, he will be the nation's best 6th man (see Scoop and KJo). Beyond that, he can work to be a Kemba Walker-type next year and make millions as a lottery pick.

He's gone. He'll see where he'd be drafted- it's likely to be pretty high- high enough to get a guaranteed deal. That being the case it would be stupid to stay. The fact that he's a sixth man is irrelevant- he's a starter in minutes, crunch time, etc. Guys like Dion come to school to get ready to be drafted- more power to them- I wish I could have left school early for a great paying job. Every year a player like Dion stays the less productive will be his draft status.

Good thing you aren't advising him.

So you think he'd be better off staying? Maybe he shouldn't use either of us as an advisor. We'll see how it plays out.

The wild card is all of the guys who would have come out last year, save for the NBA labor situation. Barnes, Sullinger, Jones, Jones, etc. There will be very little room in the first round.

Yup. It's a deep draft. Dion is not big enough or a good enough shooter for the 2. Can he play PG in the NBA? A year running PG in college could vault him from a mid 20's pick in '12 to lottery in '13. We're talking millions in guaranteed $.

I mean Donte and Flynn both look like they are gonna wash out. Except Flynn will clear 10 mil, Donte 3 mil. Who would you rather be?

Dion will get drafted. But he is no lock to make it. The NBA is full of athletes. And shooters. Unless he can do both or run PG effectively, he's just a bench guy. He should go for Flynn money, not Donte.

And this means MCW will be the third guard next year. Probably similar minute distribution to Scoop, BT, Dion, all getting 25. Dion will be our starting point which is what he needs to show the NBA. However, our best line-up may be Dion at 2, MCW at PG. It's up to MCW to force Dion over and BT to the bench. If Dion returns, MCW won't truly blow up til Jr. year. He's gonna be around. We'll see a MCW/Cooney backcourt.
