Retro Unis Coming? Not likely. Orange Bowl January 1st 1953

What is the Major Announcement Coming From SU Athletics? (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Syracuse Orange football fans have been speculating since early this afternoon what exactly would be announced on Wednesday at Destiny USA.

SU Athletics sent an email simply saying "Syracuse University Athletics will hold a press conference to make a major announcement on Wednesday, April 16 at 2:45 pm at Destiny USA in the Canyon area."

Since that time, a source tells me that there may actually be two announcements coming...

Video: Scott Shafer Explains 2014 Spring Game Format (PS; Axe)

Syracuse University football head coach Scott Shafer has hinted a few times during spring practice media sessions that he may have to get creative with the 2014 spring game format due to limited numbers on the roster, especially on the offensive line, due to injury.

Shafer confirmed on Tuesday night that the Orange will have a mixed bag of things for fans to watch on Saturday.

In the video above, Shafer explains the format for the 2014 spring game...

George McDonald Has No More Predictions for SU Spring Games PS; Mink)

George McDonald is not going there this year.

Whether it's predicting 20,000 or some other round arbitrary number for the spring game attendance, the second-year offensive coordinator is playing it cool and letting the chips fall where they may for Saturday's 1 p.m. scrimmage at the Carrier Dome.

"Sue (Edson) told me no more predictions," McDonald joked, referring to the SU associate athletic director for communications. "Whoever comes, I love everybody who comes to see us practice when we play on Saturday. No more predictions."

Syracuse fell well short of McDonald's goal of 20,000 in 2013, with an announced attendance of only 3,822 fans.

So why show up?

For starters, Syracuse is having a bit more fun, having head coach Scott Shafer mic'd up and allowing one fan attempt to make a field goal for season tickets.

And McDonald made his own pitch following Tuesday's practice.

"It's an opportunity to see the next progression and the next team," McDonald said. "Every year the team is different, so spring ball is to give you a glimpse of what the new team is going to be and the enthusiasm that it is...

Take 2: Will Syracuse Win 8 Games in 2014? (ESPN; Adelson/Dinich)

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer recently told a local radio station that his goal for 2014 is to win eight or more games. Given the difficulty of their schedule, can the Orange get there? ACC reporters Andrea Adelson and Heather Dinich debate.

HD says: Not gonna happen.

It’s a perfectly reasonable goal.

After winning seven games last year, Syracuse coach Scott Shafer said he is aiming for at least eight or more wins this fall – as he should.

If only there were eight wins on the schedule.

Syracuse showed promise last season, ending on a positive note with back-to-back victories over Boston College and Minnesota, and the Orange had an encouraging spring under Shafer and quarterback Terrel Hunt. It’s a program heading in the right direction, not one in disarray. The reality, though, is that Syracuse is stuck in the top-heavy Atlantic Division with Florida State, Clemson and Louisville and has two tough nonconference games against Maryland and Notre Dame. That could very well be an 0-for-5 stretch. Last year, Syracuse lost to FSU and Clemson by a combined score of 108-17. The Orange aren't going to close that gap in one offseason.
Syracuse’s best chances for wins this year are against Villanova, Central Michigan, Wake Forest, NC State, Pitt and Boston College. Duke, the defending Coastal Division champ, is no longer a pushover, and NC State should be significantly improved in the second season under Dave Doeren. Maryland is a wild card. The Terps are no longer in the ACC, so their return and reception at Syracuse will be interesting, but Maryland should actually be the better team this year. The Terps lose only four starters, the whole defensive line returns and they should be a much-improved offense if they can keep quarterback
C.J. Brownand receivers Stefon Diggs and Deon Long healthy...

Kyle Knapp Earns Orange Scholar-Athlete of the Week Honors (cuse.com)

Sabrina Cammock of the women's track and field team and Kyle Knapp from the football squad earned Orange Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday for their impressive performances in competition and in the classroom.

Cammock, a junior, is a member of the school-record setting 4x100-meter relay team. In its first outing of the season, Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational, the group bested Syracuse's previous mark by nearly two tenths of a second, setting a new time of 45.37 seconds in the Orange record book. She has also set two personal records so far this season, running career best times in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. She has been named to the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of her last three semesters and was named to the 2012-13 BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A member of the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics, Cammock is working toward a degree in public health.

Knapp, a sophomore, has been a member of the football team as an offensive lineman for the last two seasons. After redshirting during his freshman year, he made his collegiate debut at Florida State and went on to play in four more games including in the Texas Bowl victory against Minnesota. Knapp has been named to the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll in all three of his completed semesters at SU and was a member of the 2012 BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A member of the Whitman School of Management, Knapp is working toward a degree in management.

Cammock and the track and field team head to Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend to take on the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, beginning on Thursday, April 17.

The football team finishes its spring practices with its annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and the team will take the field at 11:30 a.m. for pre-game stretch and warmup. There is no admission charge and parking is free in all Stadium West lots. Coupons for a free hot dog and soda will be distributed at the gates, while supplies last.
