Week 1 Uniform Thread for WMU

Talking about unis is okay, but these unis are now three years old and I have heard the same comments from the same people for three straight years about all the reasons they don't like the uniforms. I get it. The world gets it. You've made your point. Stop beating the horse, it's already dead.

I come into this thread simply to see the color scheme, and then made the mistake of moving down in the thread where the same stuff is being discussed ad nauseam by the same people in the same exact way. If we still had records, they would all be broken.

You really shouldn’t read the hoops board then.

I always looked at this board as the grown up board, and hoops as the kiddie board. The uniform threads make me wonder.

It'd be interesting to see the average age of the uniform thread whiners vs the people who like them or are indifferent. Seems like the grownups become the kiddies and vice versa

Well I'll share this with you; occasionally I get to sit in a box near mid-field. There are always 7or 8 high school age kids there taking in the game. I've asked them (more than once) what they thought of our uniforms. Every one of them hate the current costumes.

So my point is, it's not just the geezers that think we look ridiculous and I find your implied premise condescending.

Btw, personally I hate some of the goofy color combinations. Anything platinum needs to be burned.

Conversely, other than the number font, I don't mind the traditional color combos and I like the all white look as an alternative.

I’m not talking about age of the people, or whether the uniforms are objectively ugly or nice. It’s the constant “wah wah wah” that has not abated since they were unveiled. Like I said, we all get it. Some people hate the uniforms. I don’t mind them, gun to my head I’d take the mid 90s. I also became an SU fan in the late 80s and early 90s, so that’s an era I remember fondly.

With that said, I’m more interested in the dudes inside the unis, and find all the handwringing over the uniforms as redundant and unproductive. They will change when they change, what’s the sense in whining about it for the last four years?

That's why ignore thread is a useful feature. Seriously not trying to be a smart aleck - I enjoy you as a poster. Just wanted to remind of that feature if you might find it useful for these threads.

I always felt the solid orange helmet was our signature look (knowing that there logos/numbers on the side back before i started watching). I also feel the "S" is not really original...Stanford, NC State...

Indeed, that and the blue and white piping on top. That was unique and cleary set us apart from the rest.
You didn't need anything else on that helmet, less was more in this instance. Just like the Browns. On that note, I can't wait for this pre-season to end as watching them without it is meh.

I'll still take that over the logo that made us look like the St. John's Light Orange Storm.

The current block S logo is one of Gross' best accomplishments. I don't mind it on the helmet.

The best brand was the helmet without the "S".

Understood, and from now on I will do that. I am quickly becoming the grumpy old guy in here with the "get off my lawn!" attitude.

Note to self: find what uni they're wearing this week, and then get the h@ll out of Dodge!

Look at purdue's unis last night. Nike creations and perfect. Beautiful colors and big, bold numbers in one bold color. The helmet was just enough bling and shine. All together, a perfect look. Nike screwed us but maybe more of a requested influence by by the gothic, NYC crazy AD. It shouldn't be this hard.

I'm the same way with conference realignment threads. Very happy to be in the ACC and understand how important it is but I'd rather watch paint dry than discuss all these hypothetical scenarios. But based on how many posts those threads get, I'm in the minority.

The best brand was the players that were wearing the helmet without the S.

No. The brand was the uniform. That is how the team was identified - even when the players were not as talented. Yes. The Program could use the talent we had for many of those years.

I would not say it was perfect because it did not immediately convey Purdue. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't instantly recognizable.

A uniform is a brand - if you can't identify the team the uniform is not working or doing what it is supposed to do.

Last night it took me a few seconds to figure out which team was Florida State and which team was Va Tech.

That shouldn't happen.

Florida State should be recognizable instantly with the classic gold pants/white jerseys, gold helmets and the iconic logo prominently displayed.

If I am FSU, I go with my brand - as Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Penn State and USC do.

The funky FSU uniforms maybe gave the players a kick, but I suspect that they lost viewers because the look did not immediately identify the team as Florida State.
