Wegman's Continues March to Atlanta

I've been in the Charlotte area for 25 plus years now. Harris Teeter is by far the dominant grocer here as another has alluded. Funny you mention about the fruits & veggies. I know for a fact that Harris Teeter freezes their produce as a friend of ours' daughter worked in the produce department during her college years. For instance, some apples can be up to a year old, etc.

The beer selection is solid...love me that Red Oak.
This confirms soo much of my Teeter experience. However, the beer selection is decent. Would be nice if Red Oak ever got the ability to sell over the state line in SC.

Major news!!
This is almost worthy of its own thread. ;)

It’s been a long time coming, but it appears to finally be happening.
Wegmans is coming to Atlanta!

“Wegmans has an LOI (letter of intent) in place for a new 80,000 square foot store in metro Atlanta. The store, which is slated for Perimeter Pointe in Sandy Springs, would be built in place of former anchors Stein Mart, Babies R Us and Michaels along Mount Vernon Highway.”

Congrats Jurrie! While there are Publix in Virginia and North Carolina, Publix has a pretty good stronghold in Atlanta. I think this will be the first real head to head battle Wegmans is taking on with them for this market. Should be interesting to see how it all falls out.

Also, if we can find a way to play football games at Georgia Tech more than once every 12 years, we will have a great place to get the sandwiches for tailgating!

No sleep till Orlando.

Woohoo! Three hours from me. They're getting closer.

Wegmans will make Publix howl.

They're building smaller stores in the mid-Atlantic and South. Not that 80,000 sq ft is small but some of the ones in CNY and WNY are nearly twice that big. The Wegmans in Dewitt is almost 160,000 sq ft. Must be cost of real estate but maybe also supply chain issues.

I think they are building (or have built) a large warehouse complex south of Richmond.

I wonder if it's hedging their bets. According to that article it also seems like they're taking over existing buildings rather than building from the ground up. Maybe as they get more established they'll build stores similar to what they have in CNY.

Excellent news. Perimiter Pointe is a booming area, smart choice. There is also a MARTA (Atlanta's Centro) rail line close by. I live about 30min north of there but I would gladly make that drive from time to time to shop there. Publix and Kroger just p**ped their pants.

So NC can get a Wegmans but Madison County and points east cant .. whats the deal ?

I think it’s ridiculous...New Hartford could totally support a wegmans...Wegmans has forgotten who they are

Price Chopper and Wegman's made a deal according to the legend

That’s crap. Why make a deal with a competitor? That only hurts those in Madison county because they can’t get the best of the best that have to settle

Cooperate and both get rich. I doubt you will see anything in Madison or Oneida County. Wegmans seems to be leaning into the South now

I think they've always aim more for what they percieve to be upper middle class or higher income areas. I have no idea what the demographics are for Madison and Oneida counties.

Not cool, Wegmans. Not cool at all. Jumping right over the State of South Carolina... Bah Humbug!

They need more yankee transplants. Tennessee, where I live, will probably be waiting quite a while for the same reason.

Cazanovia works but not sure there is enough population. Oneida County has some nice suburbs but for Price Chopper

I bet Greenville gets one within 2 years

That rumored agreement with Price Chopper, where Wegman's is not going to put stores in the Mohawk Valley looks like a real thing.

I cant remember if i posted this already, but I heard from someone who would be reasonably reliable as a source, that the "agreement" is with Hannaford and not Price Chopper. Makes sense as there are no Hannafords within 50 miles of Syracuse, or west thereof.

I think the original Wegman lost the right to expand in that area in a card game with the owner of Topps or Price Chopper.
