Weird watching Kadary Richmond play for SJU tonight against UConn...

He‘s been a total non factor in the first half. St. John’s was down 14 and now lead by two at the half. Richmond wasn’t on the court much during the run. SJU‘s defense was terrific the last ten minutes of the half. Forced 10 UCONN turnovers.

Throughout the game, the announcers have been calling Storrs "the basketball capital of the world." It startled me at first but then I realized UConn has won five men's NCs and 10 women's NCs since 1999. That is 15 in 25 years.

Both are amazing teams. Both could definitely beat Duke on a good shooting day. A lot of size, speed, and strength on both of these teams.

I will say as well. An area where we are improving this season is rebounding! That means more possessions. If we can get cohesiveness and knock down more shots. We have not had a good rebounding team in years!

Kadary Richmond may be a College Basketball all time great if St John’s can win a national championship

Kadary just had 2 game changing plays. A filthy crossover and hesitation move for a reverse layup and then a pickpocket steal leading to layup. These kids just play a lot harder. It’s simple
yes. And they are just better. Difference between guys that play major college ball and guys that are at a level lower.

It’s amazing watching the intensity both teams play with. Having two all time coaches in Pitino and Hurley who demand hustle, effort and intensity makes a massive differences. We need a dose of this. Or a coach who can instill this culture

We would not score 40 points against either team. They both play with more passion and toughness. That said kadary and st johns can't shoot. If they don't turn you over they won't beat the Dukes of the world.

They have done a remarkable job, especially considering how conference expansion has been unkind to them.

What a great in bounds play and play by RJL. That was a feel for the game play

I tuned in around halfway through the 1st half, as Pitino had just chewed out his team, and then they went on a 14-2 run. Their defense was so good in that stretch that UConn couldn't get the ball into the lane, let alone run their offense. Such ball pressure by St. John's!

In the 2nd half, UConn did get into their offense. Aside from that great read by Luis on the game clinching basket on that inbounds play for St. John's at the end, I thought in the 2nd half UConn was running their offense very well.

There are so many things to notice and appreciate about UConn's inbound plays, their picks on the side of the lane for cutters 10-12 feet from the rim. The C starts the offense closer to the foul line than the 3 point line. Picks and cuts are made closer to the basket in UConn's offense. And of course they run great motion along the baseline, and their handoffs up top are crisper and more purposeful.

St. John's style was maximum effort, ball denial, hammer the glass, play like dogs and switch on defense. They were a great watch. Hell of a game. They play with more freedom on offense than UConn, but Pitino teaches them how to read defenses well.

It’s tough to see how far off we are from true high level basketball like what was displayed in this game. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen that level of play from a Cuse team.

That’s a slogan on one of the new “Welcome to CT” highway signs. The others tout being the pizza and submarine capitals of the world. Hard to argue with any of them.

Pitino’s teams always force turnovers, just like JB’s teams did for most of his 47 year career. Remember those days. Even last year we were good at creating steals and turnovers.

St John's is what happens when you have a good coach...we should have hired Pitino. I'm 50% joking and 50% serious, we'd 100% be better off
I wanted Pitino because I wanted someone proven to come in and stabilize the program after JB let it atrophy over his last 5-6 years. Then he could’ve retired after 5 years or so but the program would be in a good place to attract another top coach.
