Weirdest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

Beyond that - people really suck at public apologies. “It wasn’t my intention” has somehow turned into a boilerplate line in these things - which is bizarre because it should NEVER be in any type of an apology. I’d say that whatever PR person actually typed that up should be fired, but that wouldn’t be fair since that gets included in almost all public apologies now.
Unfortunately people just don't fess up and say I was wrong and I knew I shouldn't have and apologize for their behavior... they just have the lame PR line about respect, do better next time deflect their blame and involvement and then just continue on doing it. The apology would be ok if it happened the 'one time' and he left the field. The continuation and the wording basically is horse hocky as the colonel would say on MASH.

Fire the coach then as he doesn't represent VT goals or ideals or ut prosim if that is his attitude.

Or fire him for being a moron who doesn’t understand reality and consequences of behavior. A while back I started reading about 4th generation warfare and realized a lot of it - specifically the levels of warfare - are generally applicable in most situations. The idea is there are three levels of warfare - physical, mental, and moral.
  • Physical: Actual combat, which is considered the least important level
  • Mental: The will to fight and belief in victory
  • Moral: Cultural norms, which is considered the most important level
With a decent frequency, I see sports teams react to a situation where they were treated poorly with a grossly disproportionate response. One example was in 2011 in the NHL, when the Islanders reacted to a marginal hit by Maxine Talbot against Blake Comeau which caused Comeau to miss some games by playing a goon squad the next time they played, actively trying to injure Penguins players. I remember watching the game as a guy who hated the Penguins and having my sympathies flip somewhere early in the 2nd period - the Islanders were massively failing at the moral level of warfare by being so blatant in their intents to injure.

If a coach actively allowed a kicker to disrupt a band performance and create a potential safety hazard to “send a message” that he was unhappy about a call - he failed as completely at the moral level of warfare as he possibly could. More importantly, when people show they don’t understand this concept - even if just intuitively - they are going to repeat this mistake again. It’s effectively like having a time bomb on your sideline; the school just has to hope and pray he doesn’t go off and create a gigantic PR crisis for the school in the future.

I have no idea if that’s what actually happened since this is just message board speculation - but I’d be very concerned as a Virginia Tech fan if this speculation is anywhere close to reality.

Dude... That is deep and something my brother would say... But so true. I'm sure the HC wasn't on the field, but there should have been enough subordinates to curb the behavior when it was mentioned. The fact it occurred should get at least one coach/staff and honorable boot. Ironically to pile on that...
If that was intentional it can be considered a crime and assault, while engaged it in sports activities it is one thing, but when you single out those who have no participation (band) and are just performing...

Was in diabolical revenge years later for Colin Barber and lollipop gate from our big east rivalry days?

Somewhat of a moot point, the dumbass wouldn't have gone on the field during half time in the first place if the coaching staff hadn't condoned it. Now he's apologizing while the coaches that are supposed to be his leaders have gone mum. VT can go take a long walk off a short pier.

I agree... Leadership should have prevented it... They should know the rules and just plain common sense and etiquette, and just literally the right thing to do. The player is now on the short end, but he did it himself as well, but it could have been prevented.

John Love should be suspended by the ACC, drawn and quartered, and his entrails used as dog food.

Any punishment less is lip service.
I'm not going that far, but in retrospect the staff/coaches should have gotten involved and could have prevented the whole thing. Instead they let it persists or didn't supervise.. They should know the roles. However, Love dug his own grave by persisting.
