Portnoy is another guy who I'm kind of amazed that he's famous. He just seems like an asshat.

Sadly he’s famous largely because he is an asshat.

Portnoy has certainly behaved quite poorly at times (particulary in his younger years), doubled-down on stupid behavior, and is very thin-skinned.

That said, I think his pizza reviews are good for small business pizzerias and he has done some really good stuff with shelter dogs/dog rescues.

He's a mixed bag at best.

He is in entertainment, he is often the heel as it sells clicks. Dude personally did more for small biz during hard times than any other private individual during pandemic. For that, he always has my respect to a degree.

If he’s not, then what are we even doing here? he’s the face of Syracuse basketball history and has a 60-year investment in the program that was the center of his and his family’s life. If he cares about the program he built, and I assume he does, he should be fundraising for NIL and the program. FWIW, I assume he must be.

Your assumption is correct, they just aren't big public events.
Most decent- sized donations don't come from gala-type fundraisers, but are cultivated over multiple meetings/ discussions.
Think along the lines of, "Hey coach, we've been talking for months with a wealthy, successful alum in NY/Chicago/LA. We think he's close to donating a large sum to SU. He's mentioned being a big SU hoops fan and we think a small group lunch with you would put him over the top. What do you say?"

Well Adam is an individual, so it would make it a lot easier for him to show proof because I doubt a university is going to feel inclined to do that.

I don't think he's trying to prove anything. It is us requesting proof. He could say "hellllll no, I'm not giving you proof!!!" and it doesn't mean he didn't pay for what he says he did.
