Well at least the pg position is set for next yr

He provides serviceable PG minutes. Not convinced he can be effective as a full-time starter once the scouting report says to sag off him. Still need to pound the hole for another guard.

Pound it. But I’m more than happy with him as starter

If you are an effective driver with good change of speed and you have scorers around you- it can still work. Look at Billy Edelin for one example. Symir is fast, strong and has great court vision. He does need to find a jumpshot to reach his potential but as a driver and that bank floater he is solid.

I don't think you will be. He might be best suited to be a guard off the bench that actually plays some. he played good defense and handles the ball better than anyone on our current team by a long shot.
we’ve had to deal with no pg for who knows how many yrs. Not counting richmond. Gimme some Sy.

I think we found a 2 guard too. Buddy will be missed but his Melo-esque ball domination will not be. We need to home some half court sets next year because we don't have NBA closers. JB needs to dig into the files and find us some sets.

and because of that, we over react when we see one play well. We did it last year and we will do it now with Symir. Other schools see this or better, every game every year.
Eh he had 11 assists and 6 boards in a game without our top scorer and our 2nd best scorer being in foul trouble. Gotta give him credit. If he’s less than consistent, then at least he’s clearly a gamer

Reminds me of a young undeveloped Scoop.

I didn't mean it to come off as a knock on him. Just the opposite. He played great. I don't think he is a starting pt guard on a good team but he should be a rotation piece. And there was no reason he didn't play more this year. We just saw that.

Agree then. Think he’s a 20-25 off the bench guy. That scenario’s a luxury though. We may need him to start if whoever else there is clearly isnt ready. If it’s a freshman kaleb joseph or jalen carey scenario, symir’s gotta start

That's a fair point.
But we now know that Symir consistently can drive and dish against top competition.
His play didn't look like a one-off.
If we've got 3-point shooters that's a big part of the game.

Symir and Jesse are going to pick and roll a lot next year.

Symir can easily get in the lane . what happens next will be the issue.

You know what would be great is if we actually played good guards off the bench the minutes they deserved. Like, your starters don’t have to play 37 mpg.

Would be nice to have Torrence/Girard playing Scoop/Triche type 2012 minutes, with another good guard off the bench doing the same.

Fully convinced we would’ve won more games if Torrence played at least 20 mpg this year.

It might have also encouraged a 4th guard to have joined this year's team.

A few things really stood out for me today
1) Symir can play big minutes. 11 assists and 6 boards. Is a baller on defense. He may not score like our guards are used to but he does everything else we need and some. If he plays like he did yesterday and today consistently. And he finds even a serviceable jump shot for next year. I’m fine with him getting 25-30 minutes next year
2) today it was obvious Joe is a 2. He looks so much better and more natural off the ball
3) Cole realllly started figuring it out at the end of the season. I think he comes back and carries that over
4) our center spot is established. Jesse is obviously a stud and Frank is a solid back up. Frank showed he can be a solid back up and get the boards

A core of

PG-Symir
SG-Girard
PF-Cole
C-Edwards
Back up center-Frank

That’s a solid core to go off next season
Hopefully Benny improves a bit and can start for us next season.
Then if we add the 5 freshman and possibly Mintz. 2 of those freshman are likely to get big minutes and just a numbers game…if we have 6 guys coming in (if Mintz commits) then odds are at least 1-2 of them will have a decent freshman year and help the team.
