We're #10

Too 10 baby!

And when you see this you realize how much history and success this program has. Even with some mediocre years we are a national name.

Cuse!
This is the kind of ranking that shows the stature with which Syracuse basketball is seen nationally and makes you believe we can attract a really good coach to take the baton from JB once he finally retires.

They have 5 national titles, 3 of them came in my lifetime. They’re a legit top 10 brand.

And they lean on those 5 heavily these days with having missed the tourney 8 times in the last 20 years, with 1 Final Four over that same time period. Takes a while for such brands to fade but overall they matter less and less every year.

I’d put Cuse, Arizona, and Michigan State ahead of Gonzaga brand wise.

144% THIS.

Gonzaga has done very well of late, but part of National #BRAND is sustained success over decades.

They’re a big fish in their meh,
non P5 conference.

The next time I see a random person wearing a Gonzaga T shirt will be the first.

It's funny that people seem to see things both ways. Indiana shouldn't be on there because they haven't mattered much in 20 years. Gonzaga shouldn't be on there because they've only mattered for 20 years.

It’s not “shouldn’t be on there”, it’s “shouldn’t be ranked quite so high”.

For both.

But especially Zaga.

Crean had a great IU team ranked #1.
That ran into the Cuse buzzsaw.

And he still can’t figure out how to beat a 2-3 zone.

Your comparing our last 20 to theirs? Not even close. Our issues are the last 8. The 12 before that included 3 of the best teams in SU history.
I’d guess he’s talking about our future as well unless the change is made thoughtfully.

Yeah 8 is adding a year every year for sure. We are like IU in '10 right now on the timescale just without any evidence of even a short term hot streak in the near future

Their fan base, like ours, is rabid and strong enough to sustain the brand. They’ll be back again with the right coach. Even terrible Tom Crean had them nationally relevant for a 5-6 year period. They were a #1 seed when we beat them on the way to the Final Four in 2013.

Half that top ten are coached by alumni and Few and Self are regional guys as well.

Not sure if Mike Woodson can coach, but IU's been recruiting very well since he was hired.

I think the key is that IU has a storied history. That helps perpetuate the brand regardless of recent history.

The Zags have only mattered for a fairly recent period of years but it is more than that. They are a small 7000 student school in the relative middle of nowhere that plays in a 6000 seat arena, and are not in a major conference. All of that plays into their brand or into a reduction in perceived stature.
