This is utter madness.

We're 111th in the country at home. Guys, there aren't that many big plays.

We have other threads talking about attendance. Your limited pool of football fans already loves the NFL. They get a steady diet of run and stop the run by the best of the best all day on Sunday.

If those people have any interest in watching football on Saturday, they have a choice between going to the dome to watch a team who throws less than 88% of teams or they can stay home and flip around until they find a shootout before watching the SEC game on CBS at night.

Why in the hell would anyone who watches football all day on Sunday want to watch a team who doesn't throw on Saturday? The people who love college football the most and don't care about the NFL are much less likely to care whether SU is offering a different product to the vast majority of people who like football at all in the area. These people seem to be running the show here.

Toss in that we've had one good year in 14 years when they were 37th in pass attempts per game.

We have this incredibly awful combination of influencers that don't realize what's going on in college football and don't care to differentiate the product from what most fans already consume on Sunday.

From 2000 on, SU's average ranking in passes per game is 83rd. Median of 85.

2 seasons in the top half. TWO!

In a dome.

75% defensive coordinators as head coach. The guy they brought in to run the saints offense might as well have been a DC for 75% of his time here.

Hire an offensive coach who will actually do what he says he's going to do

We should be in the top 15-20 in passing attempts every season.

Probably even 5-10, but I think people would get nervous about that.

I bet if you churn through the numbers you'll find that the one year we were good is the one year we had a functional oline with a future NFL player on it. The two areas where we have really lost our way the last decade has been the oline and QBs. I don't know if it's a chicken and egg thing but without at least an average oline you're not going to have much of a passing game. It's amazing because we play FBS teams which seem to have no problem giving their QB enough time to have a functional passing game. I'd add someone who can recruit and coach an oline to your wish list.

Your post only strengthens the argument we've tried so hard to be different than the rest of college football by trying to grind out wins... I have a lot of hope that Coyle, because of his background at Boise, will push the pendulum the other way.

Wouldn't it be more difficult to have a good running game with a bad offensive line?

You don't need a great defense to have an average offense. Geeze. No stops on defense is why we stink on offense?

Dude, put your little numbers away for a few minutes and just use your eyes. They are finally passing the look test

Dungey is fun to watch.

Hopefully the fans will figure that out.

Have we had a good running game? I guess some years we have. I don't know if we have a bad oline or not but I do feel that we've had terrible pass protection for a LONG time now other than Pugh's senior year. It doesn't help that our WR's can't get open against man coverage, again other than that one magical year, and our QB's typically are pretty bad, again other than that one magical year. So I guess basically I'm saying that since McNabb left the passing game has been other than one magical year which was Millhouse's point.

I need to stop thinking about it or I'm going to start crying.

Dude, put your little numbers away for a few minutes and just use your eyes. They are finally passing the look test

The talent is finally passing the look test - yes. We still run the ball way too much for the college game. And it's not even close.

Take out Dungey's non-designed runs out of scramble plays and we are still not in the top half of passes per game. In a controlled environment.

That's the point. Not the look test. It's clear that the offensive talent has improved. Which makes it all the more infuriating that the offensive coaches have not improved all that much.

I'm not going to argue the stats, because I know we have a lot to improve upon offensively.

But in a vacuum, I finally watched most of the Pitt game last night (only caught bits and pieces live). I came away very impressed with our offense against a good Pitt defense, with a good defensive mind leading it.

If Dungey and Erv get on the same page with the down the field throws, there's one less INT, and two more completions. I 'think' that can be fixed. The INT killed a drive.

Estime pushes the defender away on a long reception, when he didn't need to. Ball was thrown perfectly. Killed a drive.

Dungey getting hurt killed a drive.

Dungey made one bad pass on the other INT. Needed to throw outside to the TE, threw inside. Killed a drive. He's a true freshman, so it's going to happen.

Every other drive was productive. Yards and points.

Pitt held the ball the last 10 minutes of the game. I don't think I've ever seen that. I would guess most teams get the highest % of passes in during the 4th quarter. We never had the ball.

Weird game, but I was very encouraged by the young offense. We basically had 354 yards in 3 quarters.

Dungey is fun to watch.

yeah, but watching him and hoping he passes is like eating a box of cracker jacks and hoping you get the compass as prize.

but all you get is a full belly of cracker jacks (the run game) and then the prize is a rub on tattoo (riley dixon fake punt).

Where do we rank in total offensive plays/game?

Have you run the numbers for pass plays -vs- total plays ratio and where that would rank? I'm really hoping that we run some no huddle sometime this year.

Hopefully the pass attempts go up as Dungey gets more and more comfortable. Not shocked at these numbers. Our QBs have sucked just about every year. Now we have a great one, I am ok bringing him along a bit slowly. At some point in the near future we certainly need to take advantage and air it out more

This is why you have Kaiser on the board folks. This right here.

Pitt was a gut punch loss but not a bad performance at all. They just lost a close game because their defense isn't good.

I'm thinking back lots of years trying to figure out why more people don't go to games. This kind of apathy doesn't happen overnight.

It really bothers me that we're still trying to figure out what we want the offense to be. They need to know and sell it.

Dungey is a dynamic passer and SU fans are treated to short side options. "NO THANKS" say the casual fan

I think you want a plug and play offense. Like this is shiny and has a name - let's run it! When the truth is that every school tweaks it's system to its players, tweaks it's system to its opponent, tweaks as the season goes on based on what works on film and what doesn't.

This offense will get people in the seats as we win. If we get more consistent on both sides of the ball Dungey will throw more because there will be more attempts and it will be more exciting.

Kid just played his 4th full game as a true freshman. It's not hard to see why they've tried to take small steps and try to eliminate risk early. They came out and were very aggressive vs Pitt.

How many of those did you see on Sat?

Plays per game we are awful. I think pass/run ratio is tilted towards the pass but only because of USF.

Offenses evolve, we are 7 games in. I would expect us to pass more as the team gets more
Comfortable. There is much more to a passing play then a rushing play. I'm Beating a dead horse but it will take time. Think about the progression of Nassib from a Sophmore to a Senior.
