Two games in we've played well enough to see a lot of Del Rio-Wilson.

Stat line is 15/22 for (68.2%) for 206 yards and 3 TDs. That seems very good.

I still see a lot of skepticism about QB2 though. How come?

Yesterday the ball didn't move as well in the 2nd half as it did the first, but we definitely were making a concerted effort to give Price the ball, some penalties blew up drives, and he was playing with a lot of 2s.

I'm very confident that if we need to turn to him, he's going to play well, and he's lining himself up for a strong season next year as QB1.

I think he will have an edge for QB1 for next season. I think it will be a tight race right up till the end

Great passing ability. He flashes potential and then looks pedestrian. This a huge year for him in terms of development. It’d be great if he could get additional playing time this year with SU up big. Not sure if that’s likely here on out. Maybe Army.

Obviously this is subjective, but his body language was pretty terrible yesterday. Felt like he didn't want to be there.

I think he has a long way to go to become QB1 next year. He has the tools though.

For both of you - how come? What is it you're seeing that makes you think that?

Careful. I made a similar observation in game thread and it wasn't well received.

I am a bit skeptical of him, great athlete but it feels like he rushes everything and I think he should be better in that area than last year. Time will tell but I would not feel good handing him the reins next year based on what we have seen so far, limited though it may be.

Curious what you saw. I just felt like his attitude matched his performance yesterday.

See that's interesting because I actually think one of the things he's struggled with is not acting quickly enough on what he's seeing.

Yeah maybe I am describing him incorrectly, he seems uncomfortable, throws passes at 1000 miles per hour, seems antsy. I don’t know if that is clearer or less so! ;)

Agree with this. Has the size, has the arm. We know it’s accurate enough.

But yesterday the mobility didn’t look great. Doubt he’ll make something out of nothing as much as Shrader does. And he seemed like he held the ball too long.

More time working with Beck and he should be fine. If pressed into duty this year, he’ll have his moments but I think will have a lot of struggles too.

We need to stop Shrader from taking guys head on when he scrambles. Scramble, sure, but slide please. Need him healthy, he’s the key to everything on offense.

Consistently good teams have a reliable #2 QB who is able to take over and move the team and who is constantly pushing the starter and who plays with poise.

Thought he has been improved since last year. He is probably getting almost no run in practice with the ones or twos. GS is getting the snaps. The game plan the second half was to run the ball and burn clock. Western Michigan was still loading the box.
Early in GS career and still occasionally on here I hear the same complaints about GS.
CDRW has talent. He is developing. I have confidence that come next year we will be happy with how he plays.
Seems like some just want to look for things to complain about right now.

Next year he will be an academic SR so by then the game should slow down for him. That is a big positive.

He has a strong arm but he doesn't seem to be all that accurate. His passes tend to sail on him. Which could lead to INTs. Even some of his completions are slightly off. I think he can improve, but will it happen by the start of next year? Those aren't great traits to have in a pass happy O.

The first few games last year he showed the ability to move around the pocket and extend plays. That gives me some hope. But since then he has seemed to get stuck in place. Maybe he has too much faith in the OL. Or maybe he is taking too long to make a decision to give up on the main WR target. He has been sacked quite a bit and seems to get hit as he is passing too often.

He is athletic but he isn't a dual threat, which is something that I think we need in order to have success.

I thought he started really poorly in the Spring game and was not good yesterday. As someone else mentioned, he reminds me a bit of TD where he needs consistent protection to be a good passer and takes too long to move on from the designed play.

We have an easy schedule next year (assuming we can keep the Army game), so I think he can lead us to 6 Ws. But he will have to improve by quite a bit to have any more than that.

I’m cautiously optimistic.

But, and it’s a huge but, I want to see him with the offense tailored to him.

I don’t take much from the 2H. That wasn’t anything.

Shrader is always going to use his legs bc he doesn’t have a cannon for an arm. CDRW seems to rely on his arm first to solve issues when a play breaks down. He can flick the ball and it takes off.

IMO, we’ll always need a dual threat QB at Cuse bc we’ll never have OLs like the top teams have. You need to be able to extend plays, slide in the pocket in all directions, and be able to take off if needed.

I dunno. He’s got a lot of tools. Our speed guys must love that he basically can hit them no matter how deep they can go. But I think things would need to be tailored a bit more to him for it to really work.

Here is my take and I could be completely wrong, it's just how I take it.

Dudes a QB. I expect the QB to be the leader on the field.

I get the frustration when things are vanilla and players aren't being made or mistakes happen.

But you can't be "pouting" on the field after drives or when the play doesn't work out. Throwing the arms around in frustration and shaking the head as you're coming off the field to me is not a good look.

At the same time I know he frustrated because in the situations he is in, he is basically handcuffed by the talent around him, the calls being played, and he probably feels like he is not allowed to show what he is capable of.

I think he is talented and has a lot of potential, and in a pinch could lead the ones with a full playbook.

But I don't think he is the guy, as of now, that for a full season would be consistent enough to lead us to bowl wins.

Not saying he cannot become that guy - but as of today, Shrader is our best option by far.

I'd almost be more comfortable putting in Luke MacPhail if the need arose - not quite, but almost. Not saying I would. Just saying there is still room for CDRW to grow
