What did Boeheim say

When he hit his 7th he was going back in defense and Veleys announcing his personal best. I think another came while someone was going to the foul line.

It was crazy. To be honest I don't get riled up or bothered with his little inane ditty sayings etc but tonight when he made like 5 - 6 announcements about Cooney's performance, I was really upset. It was just so stupid and the distraction could have had bad consequences.

 W. T. .

He also referred to Vanessa Williams as an "alumnus" in front of millions of people on Saturday when ESPN carried his intro live.

Then he showed us Justin Pugh and "Alex" Lemon.

I'm glad that we had much happier things to discuss on Saturday.

Veley's performance is disgraceful and has been for the better part of a decade. I'm sorry that he's a public voice for this school. Shame on Gross for allowing this to continue for so long.

Veley didn't just do it once - he made at least 5 or 6 announcements during play about Cooney. I was shocked he did that. If Cooney had cooled off I bet JB would have really blasted him. It was just plain stupid.

Absolutely, Cherie. It made me uncomfortable just listening to it. Once he hit 6 Veley just had to point out that this was his "6th", then "7th"...then he was "one away from the record"...then he tied the record. Totally unnecessary. He could have waited until one of the stoppages in play with like 18 seconds to go. JB probably would have pulled him for a standing O if we didn't need him on the floor for free throws.

#firstplaceproblems

It is kind of comical. We've moved on to a new level. Here's the levels we know about:

Level 1 (50% of teams - mediocre programs) - Blame the lack of talent of your players for things.
Level 2 (40% of teams - higher end programs) - Blame the coach for things.
Level 3 (9.999% of teams - elite programs) - Blame the refs for things.
Level 4 (0.001% of teams - hyperspace) - Blame the PA guy for Cooney not hitting double digit 3's in a game.

I'm proud to say we have clearly left Duke behind at Level 3 and have ascended.

You appreciate that she went to Syracuse, right?

alum·nus

Ridiculous - he was making announcements after each 3 pointer. Then he started making announcements after he scored 28 that he was now breaking his career record in points.

Here's veley's problem in a nutshell. He literally does play by play on the PA in the middle of the game. It's the strangest thing. No tact.

Its really just obnoxious. I can't remember if it was Christmas or Grant, but literally right after the block as a loose ball scrum has ensued, he's announcing a blocked shot. That is absolutely ridiculous. No problem with Boeheim giving Veley a little "guidance".

We could go straight up And 1 Emcee Rell style and hand him a mic with a long cord and let him roam around courtside discussing everything happening in the game.

Try again.
Are you questioning that she went to Syracuse -- which even ESPN's chyron pointed out -- or that "alumnus" is incorrect? Just to be sure (the above was from Webster's) -- here's this from Wikipedia:

Williams competed in the Miss Syracuse (University) beauty pageant when a campus musical she was in was canceled in 1983. After winning the Miss Syracuse title, Williams won the Miss New York crown in 1983, and went to compete for the Miss America title at the national pageant in Atlantic City. Prior to the final night of competition, Williams won both preliminary competitions (talent and swimsuit) earlier in the week. Each day's preliminary competitions have winners announced. Therefore, there can be as many as six "prelim" winners: three each for talent and swimsuit. To win a "prelim" in both is a strong precursor to success in the finals. She was crowned Miss America 1984 on September 17, 1983, becoming the first African-American to win the title.[6] Williams' reign as Miss America was not without its challenges and controversies. For the first time in pageant history, a reigning Miss America was the target of death threats and hate mail.[16]

She's an alumna.

Boeheim's an alumnus.

Basic stuff. That the voice of an institution of higher education would mix that up is disappointing; that he'd do it during a rare live television feed in front of millions of people is embarrassing and reflects poorly on the university.

Wow, that's small potatoes. I like to criticize people who say "chomping at the bit" (as opposed to the correct "champing") or incorrectly uses "begs the question" when they mean "raises the question" -- but I keep it to myself. He's not alone in using "alumnus" for singular female -- from only the third entry on Google (not to mention the previously cited Webster's):

We used to have “alumnus” (male singular), “alumni” (male plural), “alumna” (female singular) and “alumnae” (female plural); but the latter two are now popular only among older female graduates, with the first two terms becoming unisex. However, it is still important to distinguish between one alumnus and a stadium full of alumni. Never say, “I am an alumni” if you don’t want to cast discredit on your school. Many avoid the whole problem by resorting to the informal abbreviation “alum.”

Yeah, why bother with proper English?

It's not like speaking is his job.

The school just changed its URL to officially recognize "'Cuse" -- you think they have a problem with shortcuts?

I truly believe you are living in the past. Yes, there once was a clear distinction based on gender but language evolves over time and that distinction is now blurred. Maybe Veley should have just shortened it to alum which has become common usage.
I guess it's possible that millions of viewers have lower opinions of SU as a result, but I highly doubt it.

I've always thought of her as an alumnus. And the fact that she has been in movies, I've thought of her as an actor as well.

Isn't that Suzyn's job? :p
Actually, John Sterling has blown more no hitters than I can remember, by mentioning it 100 times during the game. In fact, I remember Coney saying he was going down into the club house between innings during his and Sterling kept mentioning it during the broadcast and Coney wanted to go up in the booth and strangle him so he would stop talking about it.

On a side note, I love David Cone. Man looks like he runs with the devil, would love to have a beer or 7 with him some night and listen to what I expect to be spectacular drinking stories.

He has never understood that PA announcers are not play by play announcers.

My advice to Mike:

Less is more. Know your place and please stop embarrassing the Syracuse program and annoying the fans with your shameless attempts to bring attention to yourself.

The saddest thing is that he is a professor and teaches at Newhouse.

He's also the chair of the sports management department.

Well there are probably several reasons not to do it, but I can imagine a guy getting on the PA system in Yankee Sradium in a 0-0 game in the 8th inning: "Hey fans, so-and-so is just 6 outs from a NO HITTER!!!"
You can't predict baseball.

I'm proud to say we have clearly left Duke behind at Level 3 and have ascended.

It's interesting you use those words because one author his written a book about the US Capitol's dome being a temple of ascension, pointing to the painting on the ceiling(The Apotheosis[deification] of George Washington) among other things as holding many details overlooked by most. I'm not necessarily endorsing his work, but it is rather interesting and has a lot of information the American public is even less aware of than the correct usage of masculine and feminine Latin nouns. Speaking of Latin, on the ceiling George Washington is surrounded in the painting by Roman(and Greek) gods, giving it yet another tie in to this thread.

I'm not necessarily saying the Carrier Dome is now a temple of ascension, but with Dickie V really pressing hard for JB to get a statue made during his lifetime, maybe that is almost as out there as Lincoln demanding the Capitol Dome be built as civil war ravaged the nation. Maybe we can commission Lawrinson to adapt it into to the Apotheosis of Boeheim.
